Amazon and Microsoft’s stores connect to Disney Movies Anywhere
When Disney launched its Movies Anywhere app early last year it could only plug digital copies into your iTunes account, but today it linked up with Amazon Instant Video and Microsoft Video. Besides new Disney apps for Xbox 360 and Amazon’s Fire TV platform, next week on the 15th it’s launching on Roku and Android TV. That means any movie you’ve unlocked with Disney (like Big Hero 6, Guardians of the Galaxy or Avengers: Age of Ultron) is viewable through any of those services, as well as Google Play and Vudu. Once you connect them to your account, buying a copy on one service unlocks the movie on others, as powered by Disney’s KeyChest setup. More importantly, Amazon and Microsoft don’t support Ultraviolet digital copies, which may swing the balance of power just as Ultra HD Blu-ray arrives on the scene. Wherever you stream your movies, linking your accounts may be worthwhile since Disney will toss a free copy of Monsters Inc. into your account for doing so.

The Met Office wants you to name UK storms on social media
Britain has never experienced weather conditions on the level of Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Sandy. Even so, the island nation is prone to the occasional storm, and to raise awareness the Met Office and Met Eireann, the Irish Meterological Service, is letting the public name some of them. At any point, you can make a suggestion by tweeting the @metoffice Twitter account with the hashtag #nameourstorms or by leaving a post on the Met Office Facebook page. If social media isn’t your jam, you can also email pressoffice@metoffice.gov.uk with the subject name “nameourstorms.” The suggestions will then be compiled into a master list, presumably with a little bit of curation, and then used in alphabetical order, alternating between male and female names. The system is coming into effect this autumn, but it won’t be used for just any storm — only those with “medium” and “high” wind impacts will qualify. Does anyone else think “Sue Storm” is a good idea?

The Oukitel K4000 can survive a hammer beating… and 7 days on a single charge

Oukitel is among the newest Chinese smartphone brands that are starting to get the more recognition. Their devices come with very unique capabilities and offer great value. The most popular happens to be the Oukitel U6, which has mid-end specs and a secondary E-Ink screen that extends battery life up to 120 hours. What if you want great battery life without having to sacrifice a full-blown display, though.
The Oukitel K4000 carries a… well, 4000 mAh battery. The company claims the phone can survive for 7 days on a single charge, assuming it is going through “normal use”. Heavy usage should reduce that to 3 days. Long battery life is not the only feature Oukitel is touting, though. It seems this phone is also quite durable and can literally take a hammer to the face.

To prove this, Oukitel has taken a hammer to the K4000 screen multiple times. It’s apparent that the phone survived without a single crack, and no scratches are visible from where we stand. Give the video a watch and try not to cringe!
The one argument we could pose is that Oukitel never failed to place the phone above a box before hitting the K4000 with an iron hammer. This softer platform could arguably act as a cushion for the device. Would the results be different if the phone was placed on a hard surface? Likely, but we can’t deny this is still impressive, and Corning’s Gorilla Glass is known for being quite durable. Are any of you planning to get this one? I am still thinking the Oukitel U6 is a better option for my needs.
Ballantine designs ‘space glass’ for drinking whiskey in microgravity
Anyone offended by the prospect of drinking fine whiskey inside sealed space packs with straws after Suntory sent its finest variety to the ISS for testing? Don’t worry: Ballantine’s got your back. The liquor company has commissioned Open Space Agency’s James Parr — who also created a Lumia-powered 3D-printed telescope in the past — to design a high-tech whiskey glass especially for zero-G environments. He tested a number of designs before settling on a rounded glass with a spiral convex stainless steel base plated in rose gold that can create the surface tension necessary to hold the liquor down. The liquid then passes through channels on the sides of the glass all the way up to the golden mouthpiece.
The “glass” part itself is actually 3D-printed medical-grade PLA plastic, the same kind used for heart valves. Since everything tends to float in microgravity, the base hides a 22-pound magnet that can be used to stick the glass on magnetic surfaces. Plus, it has a one way valve where a customized whiskey bottle nozzle can be inserted to pour out a shot. Parr and Ballantine published more details about the design process on Medium, if you’d like to read more about how the “space glass” was created. Sure, it could be nothing but a marketing stunt, but it’s amazing how much thought went into designing a whiskey glass. It’s unfortunate that most of us might never get to use it in its intended environment; good thing the final product at least looks fancy enough to display.

Pre-orders for Nexus 5X may begin October 13th
Another day, another Nexus rumor – this time it’s about when the world can finally do something to get their hands on the Nexus 5X as it’s known. That’s not just all, however, as this rumor suggests that both the LG and Huawei built Nexus 2015 devices will be available for pre-order on October 13th, 2015.
This one comes from TalkAndroid and a mysterious ‘source’ that suggests the devices will be announced at an event in San Francisco on September 29th and be available for pre-order on October 13th.
The actual shipping date was not divulged, however historic Nexus devices have shipped 1-3 weeks after pre-orders went live.
An October 13th timeframe for pre-orders of the new Nexus devices seems legitimate, but with a sketchy unspecified source, you’ll be forced to take this one with a pinch of salt.

Flipkart launching Moto X Play in India this September 14th

A new genre of devices enters the market offering near-high-end specs at very affordable price points. It’s a new step between mid-tier and high-end, so to speak. This includes phones like the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3, the ASUS Zenfone 2 and the brand new Moto X Play. Are you looking to get yourself a new handset on a budget? Those in India are in luck, as they will be seeing Motorola’s handset hit the store shelves very soon.
Flipkart has just put together a special page for the Moto X Play, which just so happens to include a countdown timer. Well, at least it did, as it seems the website has taken it down (or is it my browser? Please let us know if you see it!). Regardless, the timer suggested the phone would become available in India on September 14th, at 2 PM local time. In addition, Motorola India’s Twitter account has been teasing the phone and its 30 hours of estimated battery life time.

We really don’t need much more indication of this device coming to India soon, but many of you may still be out of the loop on the smartphone’s specifications. What is this Moto X Play all about? The phone is no bad contender. It packs a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 615 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16/32 GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD), a 21 MP rear camera, a 5 MP selfie shooter and Android 5.1.1. But likely the most enticing part of the hardware is the battery, which features 3,630 mAh of pure juice!
That battery size, along with the phone’s thrifty energy needs, should keep your battery going for quite a long time. Motorola estimates about 30 hours of mixed usage. We will have to give the phone a test before we pass judgement on this, but I feel like we can trust Motorola on this one.
We are not quite sure about Indian pricing on the Moto X Play just yet, but the phone is said to cost £249. That would be about $381 USD or about 25,414 Indian Rupees. As it goes with all device pricing, though, we can’t expect a direct correlation between markets. We will hear more about exact Indian costs when the phone launches, so keep an open eye on Android Authority’s homepage for more details to come!

The display on the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is only 4K some of the time
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Many of you will have heard that the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium was announced at IFA 2015 with the world’s first 4K display in a smartphone. Overkill perhaps, but Sony claimed that their device would still be able to last 2 days on its sizeable, but not gargantuan, 3,430mAh battery – naturally, we thought something was amiss, but this perceived mismatch has a very logical explanation. That reason is that the display on the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium isn’t actually operating as a 4K display all the time – rather, it’s 1080p during normal operating and only 4K when it needs to be.
That’s rather genius, for quite a few reasons – most of you will know that when you increase a device’s resolution, you make your device’s processor work harder to do the same things, just with more pixels. This is why devices with the first Quad HD displays, like the LG G3, performed so badly on benchmarks back then compared to devices with 1080p resolution. In this way, the Z5 Premium will continue to perform optimally during everyday tasks, and when you are watching media or playing games, scales up to 4K for the short period that you’re doing it. Not bad, Sony; not bad at all.
