Samsung is about to cut 10% of its workers from its headquarters

Even Samsung isn’t immune to the premium smartphone downfall that has taken hold in the industry this year. Samsung has been bleeding for some time now, a period that closely followed the release of the Galaxy S5 – and despite the fact that the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the best devices the Korean manufacturer has ever made, it ultimately hasn’t helped the smart device giant get out of its own hole. Like HTC who cut 15% of its workforce last month, Samsung is about to cut 10% of its workers from its head office in the latest sign that even the biggest manufacturers are starting to feel the pinch in these ultra-competitive times.

With a workforce of 98,999 employees at its headquarters, this really gives you an idea of just how serious things are at Samsung – not even the recent releases of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ appear to have stopped what was coming. It’s always sad when people have to lose their jobs and it’s even harder to watch when things were supposed to be looking up for Samsung – we can only hope that Samsung returns to profitability soon.

HTC’s woes continue, removed from top 50 Taiwanese index

The hits keep on coming for embattled smartphone maker HTC. They’ve had a rocky year with smartphone sales down and a shakeup at the top of the company and now they’re taking another hit. Following a downward spiral of stock prices, the Taiwanese Stock Exchange FTSE TWSE Taiwan 50 Index will remove HTC’s listing. As of September 21st, the tech giant will be replaced by a textiles company on the index. The top 50 index lists the biggest and best of Taiwanese blue chip stocks representing nearly 70% of the country’s stock market.

HTC was once on top of the Android world. They were the biggest Android OEM even making the HTC Nexus One, the first reference device from Google. They’ve gone on to work on a few more projects with Google, namely the Nexus 9 tablet but have fallen on hard times. The HTC One M7 has lauded by critics on release for it’s beautiful design and build quality but the inability for HTC to adjust to a changing market and lack of compelling mid and low tier options have left HTC reeling.

HTC is rumored to be announcing two new flagships at the end of September. This may be a make or break announcement for the company.

Raspberry Pi gets an official touchscreen display

Raspberry Pi Display

Although it’s pretty easy to hook up a Raspberry Pi to a screen using its HDMI port, it’s not exactly the most portable of solutions (especially if there isn’t a TV or monitor around). The Raspberry Pi Foundation recognized this, so it set about finding a “simple, embeddable display” capable of giving Pi owners a screen from which to work from, but that also embodies the DIY spirit of the board that it connects to. It’s taken almost a year, but the official Raspberry Pi touch display has gone on sale today, offering tinkerers a 7-inch capacitive 800 x 480 touchscreen display that supports 10-finger touch.

As you’d expect, connecting the display to the Pi requires a steady hand and a little patience — it’s not as easy as plugging in two ends of an HDMI cable (but that’s all part of the charm, right?). You can choose to power it via the Pi’s GPIO port or by plugging a microUSB power supply into the display board, while a ribbon cable connects to the Pi’s DSI port. The Raspberry Pi Foundation has ensured that both the display board and the Pi itself can be mounted on the back of the display (as shown in the image above), making it a lot easier to connect the various cables and also to store.

Raspberry Pi Display

As it turns out, the Raspberry Pi isn’t the only maker board getting an official display. DIY computer kit Kano, a project that has been embraced by schools, has opened pre-orders for a 10.1-inch HD (150 PPI) LCD screen that also requires you to build it yourself. The case’s design also allows you to store the Kano’s keyboard and a third-party battery inside, making it truly portable.

The official Raspberry Pi display is available to buy at all the usual Raspberry Pi stockists starting from $60 (£48). There’s also six different colored frames to choose from, but you’ll pay a little extra for the privilege. If you’re new to the Kano, the kit and the display bundle will cost $250 (£200) or $110 (£90) for the screen on its own.

‘FIFA 16’ demo lets you control a women’s team for the first time

FIFA 16 is a little special this year. For the first time ever, EA will let you play its football game as one of 12 women’s national teams. It’s a landmark moment in the series, and today you can see how it all works with the long-anticipated demo on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC. You can step out onto the turf as one of two women’s teams — the USA or Germany — or get to grips with one of 10 professional clubs: Barcelona, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Inter Milan, Manchester City, PSG, Real Madrid, Club Atlético River Plate and the Seattle Sounders. With whipped crosses, mid-air tackles and some new finishing animations, there’s a lot here to sink your Suarez teeth into.

Twitter for Windows 10 gets a ‘trending stories’ page

Windows 10 just got a new Twitter app, and while it did get one interesting new feature, other changes merely brought it up -to-date with other versions. For instance, the new app (version 4.1.0) now allows Windows 10 users to quote tweets without wasting valuable characters, a feature that’s been around on the web and mobile apps since April. It did get one interesting new feature called “happening now” that shows popular Twitter stories in a grid (above). However, that may need some tweaking, as the stories I saw didn’t reflect my interests whatsoever.

The new version still hasn’t arrived to Windows 10 mobile, which isn’t too surprising since the OS is still in beta. When it does launch officially, however, apps like Twitter are supposed to be “universal” and run across all Windows 10 platforms. Since developers are more inclined to create apps for the huge numbers of Windows 10 desktop users, Microsoft is hoping that the mobile OS will also get reasonably up-to-date software — the lack of which is its biggest weakness.

Report: Samsung to cut 10 percent of head office staff

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+-13

According to the Economic Daily, a Korean newspaper, Samsung is preparing to cut 10 percent of office staff at its headquarters. The electronics giant has been struggling with lower than expected revenue results, as its smartphone sales lose ground to lower cost rivals.

Samsung will apparently be cutting employees in its human resources, public relations and finance departments, as part of the company’s ongoing cost cutting measures. These could be extended through to next year as well. The company employed a total of 98,999 staff at its headquarters as of June 30, according to a regulatory filing.

Despite a generally positive reception for its latest line-up of Galaxy smartphones, Samsung doesn’t appear to have translated this into a rebound in profits. The company saw smartphone shipments drop again in Q2. Samsung also apparently suffered with display production issues earlier in the year, which, combined with increasing competition from more cost effective manufacturers, has been hurting the company’s income for numerous quarters.

“Samsung’s preparing to tighten its belt as it isn’t likely see rapid profit growth in the years to come.” – Chung Chang Won, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Seoul.

According to data from Bloomberg, Samsung generated 206.2 trillion won ($171 billion) in sales last year and is estimated to return around 200.2 trillion won in sales this year, suggesting a mostly flat 12 months. Cost cutting measures could help Samsung boosts its profit, but won’t help to address the company’s underlying sales slump.

Samsung refused to comment on the matter.

New leaked photo gives us a side view of the new LG Nexus 5

AndroidPit is back again, this time with a leaked photo that gives us a side view of the new LG Nexus 5 and clearly shows the two-toned white that’s become a staple in the Nexus world of smartphones. As per the previous photo which gave us a great look at the device’s back, the background of the image has been removed to show only what we need to see. From the side, the slightly raised camera is clearly outlined – when compared side to side with the old Nexus 5, the two don’t look all that different.

side view of the new LG Nexus 5AndroidPit’s source also divulged that the blue that the Nexus 5 is going to be offered in is going to be more of a bright blue – think iPhone 5C rather than Nexus 6 blue. We don’t know if we’d be a fan of it, but if you don’t like that, there’s always the usual black and white versions to choose from. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing all three coloured variants at a press conference on September 29th, and it was revealed earlier today that we should be able to start throwing our money at Google on October 13th.

HTC will release two new flagships at September event, leaks suggest

HTC has been having issues. Earlier this year the company lost so much value it was basically worthless and now they’ve been dropped from Taiwan’s top 50 index.  This was on the back back of the failure of the One M9 to attract customers and and a tepid response to their low and medium tier phones. But the once proud tech giant is looking to get back on its feet with the launch of two new flagship devices, according to a new leak.

HTC-event

On Twitter, upleaks, who appears to be plugged in to all things HTC, leaked a press invite pulled from HTC’s Weibo account. The invite states that on September 29th, the Taiwanese smartphone and tablet maker will release two new devices. A translation states that “double flagship new machine will be released in Hakone, Japan” on September 29th.

There’s long been rumors of a new HTC One A9 or Aero device that has yet to surface and the Butterfly line that hasn’t received a flagship update this year. These two options could go a long way to boosting sales in Asia but with the Apple iPhone, Samsung Note and S6 Edge+, Moto X line and Nexus line all releasing in the last 3 months of the year, it might be difficult for HTC to gain any momentum in 2015 here in the states.

What do we know about about the Aero (or One A9) so far? Not much. It’s been spectulated that we’ll see a 5.2″ quad-HD display with 4 gigs of ram and a 3,500 mAh battery being powered by a MediaTek chip but nothing concrete has come out yet.

Do you think HTC can rebound or are they doomed? Let us know in the comments where you see the future of the once largest Android OEM going.

Opera Mini browser updated with improved data compression

Opera Mini review

Opera Mini offers some major data savings with its browser compression techniques, but it has often been criticized for going too far and sometimes completely destroying website layouts in the name of saving seemingly small amounts of data. The latest update for Opera Mini aims to address this problem with a new “high” compression setting.

While that might still sound strong, the old compression option has been bumped up to the title of “Extreme”, so the new setting is toned down quite a bit. Importantly, images sizes and layouts are more regularly maintained under this new option and you will even find that video playback is enabled. Opera says that the setting offers a “full web experience”, and the only customization option is an image quality setting.

Opera Mini mode comparison

A quick test and a couple of refreshes still shows major data savings with the “high” mode, while preserving the original layout.

As a result, the data savings are smaller, although the tweaks should still be enough to see you through a poor connection or help to stretch those last megabytes when your data plans begins to run dry at the end of the month. The Extreme mode is still there if you really want to cut down on data usage.

The latest Opera Mini update also includes a new full screen tab gallery, the fixing of bookmarks and saved page entries above the speed dial, and changes that now list saves pages in a full screen list with both the title and URL. There are also improvements to the download system, as well as various stability and usability improvements.

If you want to try out the improved compression feature, you can grab Opera Mini from the Google Play Store for free.
