Micromax YU5050 and Yu4711 specs leak just before launch

YU_Invite_September_8thJust before tomorrows launch, the specs of the Micromax YU5050 and Yu4711 have leaked. It looks like there will not only be two phones, but they will be launching at two very different price points.

The leak comes from Geekbench testing. They claim that the Yu Yu5050 will be a high-end device, which is quite different from what the company usually offers. It is supposed to have a 1.5GHz octa-core Snapdragon 810 (MSM8994) processor, 4GB of RAM, a 5.2-inch full-HD display and will run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop-based build off of CyanogenOS. The Yu5050 is seen scoring 1353 in single-core test and 4622 in the multi-core test.

The Micromax Yu4711 is the cheaper phone and will feature a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) processor clocked at 1.2GHz, with 1GB of RAM. We would assume it will also run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop based off of CyanogenOS. The Yu4711 shows a single-core score of 263 and multi-core score of 743.

Get your wallets ready: October 13th inked as date when LG Nexus and Huawei Nexus pre-orders go live

The stars are aligning and it appears quite likely that Google will be announcing its new Nexus smartphones, one from LG and one from Huawei, at an event in San Francisco on September 29th. As has been the case before, the announcement of the device doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be able to put your money where your mouth is immediately after, so the question remains: when will LG Nexus and Huawei Nexus pre-orders go live? According to TalkAndroid’s sources, that day is October 13th, or about two weeks after the rumoured announcement event. For reference, TalkAndroid has also provided some examples from previous Nexus releases to demonstrate why this is quite normal:

  • Nexus One: December 12, 2009 (confirmed); January 5, 2010 (released)
  • Nexus S: December 6, 2010 (announced); December 16, 2010 (released)
  • Galaxy Nexus: October 19, 2011 (announced); November 17, 2011 (released)
  • Nexus 4: October 29, 2012 (announced); November 13, 2012 (released)
  • Nexus 5: October 31, 2013 (announced, pre-ordering started)
  • Nexus 6: October 15, 2014 (announced); October 29, 2014 (pre-ordering started)

If nothing else, that seems to make a lot of sense, though we’ll always take rumours surrounding Nexus devices with a grain of salt. Even so, be sure to mark September 29th and October 13th on your calendars, just in case.

What do you think about LG Nexus and Huawei Nexus pre-orders going live on October 13th? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

‘Pikmin 4’ is not only real, but nearly finished

2013 E3 Electronic Entertainment Expo - Day 3

You may have had to wait the better part of a decade to get a third Pikmin game, but its follow-up won’t take nearly so long. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed to Eurogamer that his company is not only working on Pikmin 4, but that it’s “very close to completion.” Surprise! Mind you, that’s about all that Miyamoto is willing to divulge at this point. He’s not talking about release dates, game mechanics (hint: it probably involves marshaling Pikmin) or even the choice of platform. Will this be one of the first games for the upcoming NX system, a swan song for the Wii U, or something else? Whatever the answer, you’ll have to sit tight and hope that Nintendo does justice to its cult favorite game franchise.

Google found a way to bypass Adblock in YouTube

Adblock-Plus-Logo

Adblock has been a life-saver to many web advertising critics out there. This software makes publicity disappear in most websites, but the problem with a cleaner internet is that those running these pages have found themselves affected by lower revenues. Pagefair’s studies corroborate that about 144 million users take advantage of Adblock as of the end of 2014, which accounts for about 5% of the whole internet community. This would seem like a small number, but since these numbers are mostly concentrated in western markets, profits have seen a significant impact.

To put it into perspective, about 27.6 of the surveyed USA-based participants claimed to use the ad-blocking services. This likely also means that over a fourth of the possible earnings are being stripped away from online businesses, which often depend on advertising. Of course, Google and some of its services is also going to see a negative effect from such services, so they have decided to take action. A bevy of online reports tell us the Search Giant has found a way to bypass Adblock’s effects in YouTube.

Youtube logo Android app

According to these reports, YouTube is now treating video ads as pre-clips, making it impossible to avoid them. The most interesting part is that it seems those with Adblock services activated will be worse off, as the option to skip the video will not be present for them. This can be a huge disadvantage considering some ads can run for multiple minutes. Those who want to skip videos will have to either white-list YouTube or disable Adblock services. And yes, it seems like these changes don’t only affect Adblock users, but also those who utilize similar software.

Obviously, there will be some workarounds the internet will find, but this is a clear move against ad-blockers from Google. What do you guys think about this whole situation? Are you an Adblock supporter? If so, what is your reasoning. Hit the comments and let us know where you stand on this. Will you be affected by these changes?

Amazon may enter the budget friendly tablet market with an upcoming device

The Amazon logo is seen on a podium duriAmazon is still recovering from its recent Fire Phone disaster. A new report out of WSJ states the company might be working on a super budget friendly tablet.

Amazon may be prepping a tablet device to ship next quarter. Allegedly, the device will feature a 6-inch display and many low-end specifications. So far there has been no word on any other details associated with the tablet’s specs, nor its pricing, design or availability. However, we do know that Amazon is targeting the low-end market with this one and may launch the device for as low as $50. Amazon is likely going for the basics here so don’t expect much.

The device will most likely be an Amazon exclusive and you can bet it won’t offer LTE or 4G connectivity. We should find out more about the cheap tablet in the coming weeks.

Raspberry Pi transforms upright piano into a retro loop player

Upright piano’s don’t exactly scream “high-tech,” since everyone’s weird aunt has one. A pair of hackers from a company called MajorMega may change your mind, however as they’ve modified one to give you and your friends a fun way to create multi-part compositions. The “Quaver” upright piano is equipped with a Raspberry pie board that makes it act like a 4-track recorder and loop sampler. All you have to do is sit down, punch the big “record” button and bang out your part of the song. When you hit the button again, the piano will instantly play back your creation in a loop.

From there, your next friend (or a random stranger) can step in and repeat the process. Up to four people can add parts to the song, and when it’s ready, you just hit “save and upload,” to create an .mp3 file and store it on a special website.

To build the piano, the team used 1970’s era Bose speakers, electromagnetic bar pickups and clever programming on the Pi. They also had to saw and drill the piano extensively to get everything to fit. It’s now installed in a mall food court in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and hundreds of users have already added short songs. Yes, there’s a lot of Chopsticks and random plinking, but there are a few decent efforts as well.
