Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Premium is reportedly a Japan-only variant with 1080p display

Earlier this week Sony unveiled the new Xperia Z5 series to the world, introducing three new models, the Z5, Z5 Premium, and Z5 Compact. All three handsets offer several key improvements over the Z3 and Z4 series, and their arrival is easy the biggest news of IFA 2015. However, what you might not know is that Sony actually has a fourth Xperia Z5 family member on the way, at least according to the China-based tech site CnBeta.com.
Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo reportedly has a special variant of the Xperia Z5 Compact on the way, dubbed the Z5 Compact Premium. This model is said to offer the same Snapdragon 810 processor and overall looks over the Compact, but trades in the 2GB RAM for 4GB, and the 720p display for a 4.6-inch 1080p display. The battery is also upgraded to 2900 mAh. Interestingly enough, that means this model has even more RAM than the Xperia Z5 Premium, which seems like an odd choice.

While we have reached out to NTT DoCoMo to see if we can get an official confirmation, we aren’t 100% sure of the accuracy of this report at this time. In many ways this sounds more like a wish list than anything, and so there is at least a possibility that this could be a faked advert seen in the image above. That said, Sony is no stranger to releasing better variants of their existing flagships.
After all, the Sony Xperia Z4 (aka Z3+) was criticized for not offering enough differences from the Z3, keeping the same looks, camera and 1080p display. And yet, shortly after, Sony would announce the Z4v for Verizon with a QHD display, making us wonder why Sony didn’t release the Z4 with a QHD display right off the bat. If reports of the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Premium really are legit, we can’t help but feel the same here. The Z5 Compact is an impressive phone, but a 4.6-inch 1080p display and 4GB RAM would have really taken its “wow” factor to a whole new level.
What do you think, surprised that Sony would prepare a Z5 Compact Premium so soon after launching the Z5 Compact? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
‘Halo,’ ‘Surgeon Simulator’ devs join the War Child game jam
War Child, a London-based charity that aims to improve the lives of children affected by war, is collaborating with influential developers to create a collection of games titled HELP: Real War is Not a Game. Participating developers include 343 Industries (Halo 5: Guardians), Bossa Studios (Surgeon Simulator), Creative Assembly (Alien: Isolation), Team 17 (Worms) and Hinterland (The Long Dark), all of which will participate in a six-day game jam organized by War Child. This means the studios will have just six days to create the games for HELP, and the full compilation will be sold digitally in late March 2016. Proceeds will go toward funding War Child’s efforts in global conflict zones.
War Child has done something like this before. In 1995, it collaborated with a handful of popular musicians for the Help album, which raised more than £1.5 million for the charity’s efforts. That album featured Oasis, Radiohead, Portishead, Blur, The Stone Roses, Sinead O’Connor and other famous artists, and it led to a handful of follow-up releases.
“Now, two decades on, a star-studded line-up of game developers have announced their intention to follow in those musicians’ footsteps by uniting in a unique ‘studio game jam’ designed to help fund War Child’s ongoing activities in conflict-affected countries,” War Child writes.
For HELP: Real War is Not a Game, Unreal, Gamemaker and Unity are all providing tools to participating developers on a no-cost and royalty-free basis.
In July, War Child released Duty of Care: Protecting Children in War, an evocative Call of Duty-style video that highlights the trials facing children in war zones.

Google is set to mend ties with China, launch modified Google Play Store there
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
It seems pretty obvious not to argue with your customers, especially relatively new customers, but that’s exactly what happened in 2010 when Google famously got into a dispute with China over its tough censorship of the Internet. Since then, China has grown into one of the largest consumers of the Internet in Asia, and Google has had to look on from the sidelines – while Android has a presence there, its Google Play apps don’t feature on any Chinese devices due to that 2010 decision to pull out. Thankfully, it looks like Google is set to mend ties with China, which will allow a modified Google Play Store to feature on Chinese devices as well as bring the Android Wear operating system to China for the first time too.
The obvious disclaimer over all of this is that the Chinese government must approve everything that goes through and reserves the right to shut down anything that they see as breaching their agreement. On the flip side, smartphones and smartwatches are still undergoing a big growth period in China so it’s absolutely essential for Google to re-enter China if it hopes to be there when the growth plateaus.
What do you think about Google making things over with China? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Apple Decorating Bill Graham Civic Auditorium Ahead of Next Week’s Event
Ahead of next week’s big iPhone-centric event, Apple has begun decorating the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco where the event will take place. As shared by several Twitter and Instagram users, signs with the Apple logo are beginning to go up, and several Apple-branded flags are flying.
A white Apple logo with rainbow-colored accents against a blue background is shown on one wall of the auditorium, shared by CBS/CNET photographer James Martin. The same design was seen on the invitations for the event and was created to mimic Siri’s look on the Apple Watch and iOS 9.
Security is heavy around the auditorium, with security guards and police officers guarding signage that’s being put up, according to someone on site who spoke to MacRumors and provided pictures. Some of the security guards are now wearing outfits with Apple logos on them.
The colorful Apple logos are accompanied several flags surrounding the auditorium, featuring a white Apple logo on a dark blue background. Swarms of workers are all over the perimeter of the auditorium, running cables up walls into the interior and building out the infrastructure needed for the event.
Along with the flags, Apple has decorated light posts in the area with matching Siri-style banners in a dark blue shade. The decorations for the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium are already beginning to outshine decorations and signage used at past events, and Apple is likely to continue adding more over the course of the weekend.
Apple’s upcoming Wednesday, September 9 event is expected to be huge. The auditorium where it’s being held seats 7,000, and the company may be using some of the available space to demo products that will be released. The event will see the debut of an unprecedented number of devices, including the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, the new Apple TV, the iPad mini 4, and the iPad Pro.
Apple is also expected to introduce additional Apple Watch Sport materials, perhaps in gold, and new Sport bands. An iPad keyboard may also make an appearance at the event, and we’ll also get release details for iOS 9 and watchOS 2.
MacRumors will provide live coverage of Apple’s event, through a live blog on MacRumors.com and on our MacRumorsLive Twitter account.
(Thanks, John!)

Hopper making turbulence with good deals, now on Android
Are you familiar with Hopper? Well unless you are a habitual traveler, the answer is probably not. Well if you aren’t living in airports, like some of us, Hopper is a fare finding application that attempts to find the lowest prices for trips that you’re taking.
The relatively new service is on the radar for those of us looking for the cheapest airfare possible to the places they are going. It will send you a notification when the app determines it is the right time to buy a ticket. The way they find that particular airfare is based on algorithms that predict if the prices are likely to go up or down in the near future.
Hopper works with all the airlines directly. What that means is you probably won’t see all of the low-cost airfares, unless the airline has been willing to give Hopper access to their database in real time. So although you may not have access to all the exotic destinations with only a couple of layovers to get there, it looks like most of the important points are going to be covered.
The application is quick to download, and looks easy to use. No special class is required to use this. Which is already one step further than some other offerings in this area.
Some interesting points about this application are:
The When To Fly Calendar is a feature within the new application that will help you with the best times of the day/ week or month to book certain fares.
For example, if you’re looking for the best time to book a trip to Italy, the When to Fly feature would tell you what days or weeks would be best.
The Price Prediction feature of Hopper for Android, will tell you when a fare will change in price. Hopper has been up to 95% accurate in telling the user of the service when an airfare will go up and when the same airfare will go back down, thereby saving hundreds of dollars on certain trips.
Hopper also has a great feature called Watch a Trip, which is watching the trips you want to book. Also at what price you booked any trip similar to that in the past or have planned for. If that trip’s price drops greatly then the app will notify the customer of the rate drop immediately, because the price won’t stay there long.
So, before you go somewhere like Orbitz or some other second rate website, try Hopper to book your next trip to… well, maybe CES? Go check out this great way to save on airfares. It’s available in the Google Play Store now!

Twitter clutters up iOS and Android timelines with ‘Who to Follow’
Twitter really wants new users to stick around. Now that means helping them find interesting accounts by placing “Who to follow” in the timeline of its iOS and Android apps. So now when you load Twitter on your phone you can expect to see in your timeline: “While you were away” ( a collection of tweets from accounts you follow that were published while you were away), a sponsored tweet or two and now Who to follow. Fortunately when it does pop up in your timeline its anchored to where it appeared and doesn’t clutter up your feed every time you load the app. Also you can tap on the tiny X in top right-hand corner to dismiss the feature so it doesn’t disrupt the flow of your meticulously curated list of random thoughts from friends and brands.
We’re adding who to follow to iPhone & Android home timelines to show interesting accounts: https://t.co/KrkEZKz64S pic.twitter.com/PLHDJsMbBH
— Twitter (@twitter) September 4, 2015
According to a Twitter spokesperson, how often you’ll see Who to follow depends on how much you use the service. If you use Twitter infrequently, the company assumes your timeline isn’t very engaging and believes that finding new accounts to follow could change that. If you’re a power user of the service, Who to follow will appear less often.

Older Apple TVs can get YouTube back, but it will cost you
A few months ago Google made changes to its YouTube app and pulled it from old second-generation Apple TV boxes (as well as some other older smart TVs). Now, if you’re longing for the heady days of 2007 and aren’t ready to upgrade (probably a good idea, with new hardware right around the corner), there is a way to get it back. Firecore has added a YouTube plugin to its aTV Flash (black) software for jailbroken Apple TVs. If you own a third generation Apple TV (on sale since early 2012, supports 1080p), then this doesn’t apply to you, since you still have YouTube. But if your ATV2 is still in use, this will get it back… for a fee of $30. With Apple’s big event just a few days away and a new $150 Apple TV rumored to be on the way we can see why this isn’t the time to buy an upgraded model. You could buy a Chromecast plus whatever is announced on the 9th and do just as well, but if you prefer the DIY route then follow the instructions here.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Today Runtastic announced the Runtastic Moment, a brand new wearable that combines the fashion of a traditional watch with the functionality of a modern fitness tracker. Designed to meet the needs of all types of users, the Runtastic Moment is available in four unique styles that offer different size watch faces, types of bands and colors. Simply sync it with the Runtastic Me app and what looks like a traditional watch seamlessly turns into one of the most comprehensive fitness trackers on the market. This news comes on the heels of Runtastic announcing it was acquired by adidas Group for $240 million.
“Over the past few years, we have seen the majority of players in the health and fitness space –Runtastic included – try to address the needs of users with a diverse array of tracking devices,” said Florian Gschwandtner, CEO and co-founder of Runtastic. “Looking at the products currently available, we strongly felt there was a large gap between fashion and functionality. Therefore, we developed the Runtastic Moment to be an all-encompassing device that is easy to use, aesthetically pleasing and habit-forming.”
Features & Functionalities
The Runtastic Moment is an analog watch that allows users to track Steps & Distance, Active Minutes, Calories Burned, Sleep Cycles and Goals. It does not require any charging, as it is powered by a standard battery.A Design for Everyone
The Runtastic community is incredibly diverse, with users located around the world who speak different languages, are at different fitness levels and have a wide variety of goals. With this in mind, Runtastic recognizes that one size does not fit all. The company has therefore created the Runtastic Moment in ten unique designs, which are organized into four collections:
- Runtastic Moment Fun: Boasting a stainless steel case, scratch-resistant glass and a comfortable silicon strap, the Moment Fun was designed for the playful, active types. It is available in four colors – raspberry, plum, sand and indigo – for $129.99.
- Runtastic Moment Basic: Similar to the Moment Fun, the Moment Basic has a larger display and is available in beige and black for $129.99.
- Runtastic Moment Elite: Designed for a more sophisticated look, the Moment Elite offers a stainless steel case, scratch-resistant glass and a top-quality black leather band for $179.99.
- Runtastic Moment Classic: With clean lines and a simplistic style, the Moment Classic offers a stainless steel case, scratch-resistant glass and a leather band – available in silver, gold and rose gold – for $179.99.
“We’re eager to connect with individuals who prioritize ease of use with convenience and style,” continued Gschwandtner. “A watch is the most common piece of jewelry for men and women, and we’re excited to provide our community with a top-quality product that allows them to simultaneously look great and collect interesting – potentially life-changing – data.”
Runtastic Me App
Last year, Runtastic launched the Runtastic Me app to serve as the dashboard for the Runtastic Orbit wearable. The app has now been further expanded to also work in correlation with the Runtastic Moment.Data from the Runtastic Moment syncs wirelessly to the Runtastic Me app so users can effortlessly view their statistics and daily progress, and engage in gamification features such as Streaks, where they can set and break personal records. The app also provides detailed information about sleep cycles, including duration, and both light and deep sleep phases.

Google is inching closer to a settlement with the Chinese government
In 2010, Google pulled its Play services from China. According to a new report, the company is trying to make a return to China with a modified version of Google Play to fair with the Chinese government.
Google is looking to bring its core service back to China. Google holds a lot of market share in China and what is an Android device without Google services. Earlier, Google stated “there is money to be made” and demands a settlement with the Chinese government.
Google is now in close talks with China and is allegedly inches away from closing a deal. The deal would let Google create a modified version of its Google Play Store that stays within the governments boundaries. The compromise will allow the Chinese government to shut down any service they don’t approve of at any given time. In addition, Google is working to bring its Android Wear OS to China. This would be the first time Chinese users will be able to use Google’s new smartwatches.
With Chinese smartphone manufactures on the rise, it’s essential for Google to make a deal. Competitors like iOS are gaining steam and if Google wants to open up the gap they need to make an agreement fast.
