Movie studios going after Popcorn Time users in new lawsuit

by John_A

popcorn_time_chromecastPopcorn Time made a name for itself as the “Netflix for Torrents,” which is obviously a pretty legally ambiguous area in many countries. Needless to say, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a new round of lawsuits is being handed out to Popcorn Time users.

The lawsuits are coming from the movie studio behind The Expendables movies, and they’re going after users that streamed Pierce Brosnan’s Survivor. The studio tracked IP addresses that downloaded or shared the movie, and they’re planning on subpoenaing ISPs for real names. Not good news for anyone on the service.

This is unique case in that the movie studio is going after individual users, not just distributors or the site itself. Technically, though, streaming movies like this is illegal in the US, so the studio will probably have a case. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out.
