IFA 2015: ASUS announces the beastly-looking RT-AC5300 router that boasts “world’s fastest Wi-Fi”
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
There are some pretty badass looking products being announced at IFA 2015 so far. First, there was the Acer Predator 6 with its sharp edges and now ASUS has announced a router that looks like the top of Saruman’s tower in The Lord of the Rings. Unsurprisingly, the device is being targeted at gamers and people who want 4K streaming to be a reality as the RT-AC5300 router boasts the “world’s fastest Wi-Fi” – on a side now, I feel like ASUS has missed a golden naming opportunity by calling it the RT-AC5300.
If you’re wondering what kind of speeds you can expect with the RT-AC5300 router, ASUS says you should be getting 1Gbps over the 2.4GHz bands and up to 2.167Gbps on the two 5GHz bands available to the router. I’m not great at math, but that sounds like more than enough for most people’s streaming and gaming needs – I think I know what I want for Christmas now.

Acer unveils four new Liquid phones and a convertible Chromebook

While IFA technically hasn’t started yet, the real fun always happens a few days ahead, as all the OEMs unveil their new devices at special press events. With this is mind, Acer has kicked off the festivities with the announcement of several new products, including 4 new Acer Liquid phones and a convertible Chromebook. Let’s start by discussing the phones: the Liquid Z630, Z530, and Z520. The Z630 and Z530 also have “S” models that are pretty much the same, but with slightly better specs.
The Liquid Z630 series offers a 5.5-inch 720p display, 8MP front and back cameras, and a 4000 mAh battery. The S model offers an octa-core MediaTek processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, while the standard version has a 1.3GHz MediaTek quad-core processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. Pricing for the Z630 will begin at €199 (roughly $224.16) when it arrives in September, though no specific pricing details have been revealed for the Z630S.
Next we have the Z530 series, powered by a quad-core 1.3GHz Mediatek processor. Other specs include a 5-inch 720p display, 8MP front and back cams, and an unspecified battery size. The S model has 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, while the standard version has either 1GB RAM and 8GB storage, or 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. The Z630 will price at €149 and will arrive in October.

On the lower-end you’ll find the Z330 and Z320. Both of these phones offer 4.5-inch displays, Snapdragon 210 processors, 1GB RAM, and 8GB storage. The only major difference is that the Z330 has a 210 MSM8909 with Cat4 LTE, while the Z320 has a MSM8209 and is 3G only. No exact word on pricing for either of these models just yet.
Regardless of what phone you pick up, all of them will feature Android 5.1 with Acer’s UI customizations running on top. The new Liquid family will not be made available for the North American market unfortunately, and instead will be aimed at Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Acer’s first convertible Chromebook, the Chromebook R 11, expands company’s successful and award-winning line
Innovative 360 degree hinge design gives customers four versatile usage modes for work and play
HD touch screen held steady by sturdy dual-torque hinges
Powered by Intel® Celeron ® processors for fast performance
Up to three times faster1 wireless performance with 2×2 MIMO 802.11ac wireless connection
BERLIN, GERMANY (September 2, 2015) Today Acer, the market leader and pioneer in the Chromebook category, adds the company’s first convertible Chromebook to its line-up, the Acer Chromebook R 11. The new Chromebook is packed with the latest technology and features for a faster, more productive and flexible user experience.
Following the success of Chromebook line since Acer entered the space in 2011, the Chromebook R 11 is Acer’s first convertible notebook. It easily transitions between four usage modes: laptop, pad, display and tent modes, letting customers enjoy the Chromebook in a variety of settings. 1 Based on an IEEE 802.11ac draft specification. Actual speed will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. According to Gartner, Acer is the world’s leading Chromebook brand with over 36 percent market share in 20142.
Four Modes to Fulfil Needs at Work or at Play
The Chromebook R 11 is equipped with Acer’s patented 360 degrees dual-torque hinge design, enabling customers to manipulate the display to any degree that is most comfortable for the setting. The dual-torque hinges keep the display secure and stable during touch control and while switching between the modes. Always smart, the audio channel output automatically reverses as the display changes orientation.
Since the classic laptop experience is still a crucial part of the way people use their Chromebooks, users will find themselves right at home in laptop mode when they need to access the keyboard for an efficient and productive input experience.
Pushing back the Chromebook into display mode hides the keyboard and brings the display closer to make the most of visuals and entertainment. As the Chromebook R 11 is flipped, the on-screen image automatically rotates 180 degrees to the correct viewing orientation.
Tent mode provides an ideal viewing and touch experience in confined spaces such as when traveling on a plane or train.
Push the display back 360 degrees so the Chromebook converts to pad mode for a quick and efficient way to play, share and browse. The Chromebook R 11 supports both landscape and portrait pad modes.
Lighter, Faster, More Powerful
At just 19.2 mm thin and weighing less than 1.25 kg, the Chromebook R 11 is designed to slip into book bags and backpacks effortlessly. This lightweight computer also packs a huge punch with Intel® Celeron® processors, ultra-fast 2×2 MIMO 802.11ac wireless connection, USB 3.0 port, and fast boot time. Stylish Design and Vibrant Touch Screen
The Chromebook R 11 packs style as well as substance. The premium aluminum top cover is imprinted for a uniquely textured metallic finish using Acer nano-imprint technology
The 11.6-inch HD (1366 x 768) screen with wide viewing angle is complemented by an HD webcam with HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging, with a crisp and vibrant touch screen display. The LED-backlit LCD screen has integrated 10-point touch, supporting Tap, Swipe and Pinch to Zoom gestures so any web page or app can benefit.
“By launching the Acer Chromebook R 11, we are providing our customers with a greater choice of Chrome OS notebooks,” said Jerry Kao, president of Notebook Business Group at Acer. “We already offer a variety of Chromebooks from 11 to 15 inches. The addition of the convertible series is another illustration of our commitment to our customers and the category.”
Chrome is Secure, Easy to Use and Share in Different Modes
The Acer Chromebook R 11 is the ideal device for a range of customers who view, edit, create and collaborate in programs such as Microsoft Office Online documents and Google Docs. Chromebooks are simple to use and ideal for sharing by multiple users, since users can log into their own account to access Docs, website bookmarks and other information. Storage on Google Drive protects files, documents, and photos safely in the cloud, and ensures that the most current version of the file or document is always available and safe, even if the Chromebook is lost or stolen. Security is a key benefit of the Chrome OS, as it’s automatically updated to guard against ever- changing online threats. In addition, the Supervised Users feature helps get customers online in a safe, controlled way.

Intel is testing its Core M processors for smartphones

Intel is yet to gain a major foothold in the smartphone market but the processor giant is persistent. According to Kirk Skagen, Intel’s General Manager, the company is looking to bring its latest sixth-generation Core M processors to smartphones.
More specifically, the Core M range is being testing for use with “phablet” phones. Presumably the company is looking to bridge the gap between high-end tablet performance and a small mobile form factor.
Intel’s Core M series of processors are all designed to fit within a TDP of 4.5 watts and are built on a small 14nm manufacturing process. Previously, Intel had suggested that the chip would find a home in 2-in-1 hybrids, notebooks and tablets.

The current range comprises of dual-core CPU set-ups with hyper threading and Intel’s latest HD 5XXX graphics series. However, without an integrated modem and a relatively high cost per chip, Intel may still struggle to compete with other mobile SoC manufacturers. Not to mention that it is currently unclear how such a chip will perform in a very small smartphone form factor, where cooling technology is virtually non-existent.
Furthermore, Intel has previously stated that it is looking to optimize its Core M range for use with Windows 10, so we may not see an Android implementation any time soon. That being said, the prospect of desktop-class performance in a smartphone is pretty compelling. Let’s see if Intel can pull it off.
The latest ROG laptop comes with a giant water cooler
ASUS is one a rare few companies that’s both a mainstream PC manufacturer and a respected name among the gaming community. Its ROG (Republic Of Gamers) line is a favorite, with giant laptops like the G751 earning top marks from gamers and reviewers alike. We’re looking forward to its replacement, the ROG G752, but first let’s talk about the GX700 in the image above. ASUS is only teasing this laptop, but it’s going to have an overclockable Intel K-series Skylake processor, the latest graphics from Nvidia, and, a 17-inch 4K display. Oh… and that giant thing you see next to it? That’s apparently a water-cooling system. Details are scant, but an educated guess would suggest you’ll only be able to overclock the GX700’s processor and graphics when you’re docked to it. I don’t know whether to laugh or take out my wallet.
On to the thing you’re more likely to buy some time soon: the ROG G752. It takes the basic premise behind the G751 — throw every spec you can into a giant laptop — and updates it for 2015. It’s got a far sleeker profile than last year’s model — it’s still chunky of course, but this looks much more like a laptop and much less like a riot shield.

You’ll be able to kit it out with your choice of SSDs and HDDs, sixth-generation Core i7 processors (up to i7-6820HK), Nvidia GPUs (up to GTX 980M 8GB), and (up to) a 17.3-inch 4K display (that supports G-Sync). Other specs include Thunderbolt 3.0 and a revamped keyboard with much deeper keys. Expect to hear more on the G752 before it launches this winter from $1,499. ASUS says the GX700 could appear before the year’s out also, but is making no promises.

ASUS unveils the Intel-powered, Windows 10 VivoStick
Intel generated a storm of interest when it launched the HDMI-based Compute Stick, but is anybody willing to buy a tiny, under-powered PC? Who knows, but ASUS has just launched its own model that trumps Intel’s in nearly every way. It’s a lot less clunky-looking and one-ups Intel’s Atom CPU with a Cherry Trail model, while adding an extra USB 3.0 port and headphone jack for good measure. Otherwise, it has the same 2GB of RAM and 32GB storage, and works in the same way: you plug it into any HDMI TV, add a keyboard and mouse, then compute away on Windows 10.
At least, we hope so. As we noted in our review, Intel’s stick is far from a powerhouse and not quite up to its primary task of serving music and video streaming to your TV and sound system. However, at $129, the ASUS VivoStick runs a bit less than Intel’s $150 Compute Stick, which might make it worth the gamble. Availability has yet to be determined.

ASUS’ ZenWatch 2 is dirt cheap and arrives next month
It’s been a few months now since we first clapped eyes on the ASUS ZenWatch 2, the company’s second stab at an Android Wear timepiece. Today, we’ve got a smattering of new details to go along with those first impressions: specifically, price and availability. The larger 49mm model will cost around €149 (about $170), while the dinkier 45mm variant will set you back €169 ($190). Both will be hitting store shelves worldwide in October. If you need a reminder, the wearables feature a new metal crown, AMOLED screens and a Snapdragon 400 processor. WHSmith mistakenly emails customer details to other customers

IT gaffes don’t come much bigger than this. UK newsagent WHSmith has accidentally leaked a wealth of customer information by mass-emailing details that were submitted through a “contact us” form. The affected page is supposed to send customer messages and their contact details directly to WHSmith — instead, they were reportedly sent to everyone on its mailing list. It’s a huge technical blunder, and to make matters worse, some subscribers used the form when they first received the emails, thereby putting their own details into circulation. WHSmith confirmed to the Guardian that the problem was “a bug, not a data breach” and that it was caused by I-subscribe, an external company that manages its magazine subscriptions: “I-subscribe have immediately taken down their ‘Contact Us’ online form which contains the identified bug, while this is resolved.”
Some users are reporting that the broken form hasn’t been removed from WHSmith’s site, despite it being been hidden from view. The newsagent says the rogue emails have affected less than 40 customers and that it’s contacting them now to apologise and explain what happened. Most importantly, customer passwords and payment details weren’t included in the emails — a small silver lining for those that have been affected.
