Motorola refines the Moto 360 by tailoring the smartwatch for everyone

The world is full of rectangular displays, but the original Moto 360 actually resembled a traditional watch with its display’s round shape. Motorola pushed engineering boundaries with the design of last year’s standout smartwatch. Now the company is back with a new, refined Moto 360 that is made the way you want it. The Moto 360 may have not changed too much since its debut, yet you’ll notice that customization is as important as ever to Motorola.

Since Android Wear devices are typically similar, here is a quick rundown of key specifications:

  • 1.37- (360×325) or 1.56-inch (360×330) display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 4GB of internal storage
  • 300mAh or 400mAh battery (with wireless charging)
  • Optical heart rate monitor

The way in which bands are attached to Motorola’s smartwatch has changed with the inclusion of lugs. Bands have a quick-release switch to easily remove and replace them.

Both men and women now have the option purchase a Moto 360 that was designed specifically for them. The smartwatch now comes in two sizes: 42mm and 46mm. Men can choose from either size while women, if they so choose to buy based on the recommend size for their gender, are offered only the 42mm size. The design choices, too, differ for men and women. Rather than having the men’s Chamfer and Micro Knurl bezel treatments, women are able to choose between peak and micro etch looks. And, of course, women are offered the Rose Gold case color and bezel color instead of the men’s black.

Moto Body, which Motorola calls “a holistic experience that helps you lead a healthier lifestyle,” acts as the Moto 360’s health and fitness companion service. It actively tracks steps taken, monitors heart rate, and measures calories burned. But Moto Body expands upon those statistics by providing feedback and coaching to motivate you to give your health the attention it deserves.

An exclusive feature brought to the Moto 360 is Live Dials. Shortcuts to your most-used apps are pinned right on the watch face.

Motorola, Best Buy, and the Google Store have the Moto 360 available for pre-order starting today. Nordstrom, Best Buy, and Verizon retail stores will then selling the smartwatch in late September. Based on your design, prices range from $299-$429.

Lenovo reveals the PHAB Plus, blurring the lines between smartphones and tablets

Lenovo-PHAB-Plus-silver

Lenovo believes that the line between smartphones and tablets are slowly blurring, and the just announced PHAB Plus is the company’s answer to that market, at least in some countries.

The Lenovo PHAB Plus features a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, a 6.8-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD display, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, microSD support up to 64GB, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, a 3,500mAh battery, and the device is running Android 5.0.

Coming in at 6.8-inches and featuring a Full HD display, this handset will no doubt be attractive for both work and play. Consumers will get the benefits of a smartphone in that the user is always connected, but they’ll also get the benefits of higher-end tablets, offering that premium multimedia experience.

Lenovo is also set to launch a PHAB introductory model, featuring a bigger 6.98-inch display, an “unrivaled” 4,250mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, and an octa-core Qualcomm processor.

Both devices will be available this month starting at $299USD and $179USD, respectively. They will be available in select countries, including China, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, and parts of Eastern Europe. Unfortunately, North America was not on the list.

Lenovo reveals the VIBE P1 and VIBE P1m, featuring a 5,000mAh and 4,000mAh battery

Lenovo-VIBE-P1-hero-image

Lenovo has announced two additional and massive devices here at IFA 2015, the VIBE P1 and the VIBE P1m, for consumers who need a device to last them throughout the day and well into the evening hours.

The VIBE P1 features a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, a 5.5-inch Full HD 1920 x 1080 display, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, microSD card support for up to 128GB, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and it has a 5,000mAh battery. It’s also running Android 5.1.

Lenovo-VIBE-P1m-hero-press-render

The VIBE P1m is a similar device, but has less impressive specifications. It has a 64-bit MediaTek quad-core 1GHz processor, a 5-inch 1280 x 720 IPS display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD card support for up to 32GB, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 4,000mAh battery. This particular device is also running Android 5.1.

The Vibe P1 and P1m are impressive in that they’re packing 5,000mAh and 4,000mAh batteries, respectively. One of the pitfalls of the flagship smartphones of 2015 and most likely 2016 is the lack of battery available. Full HD and 2K displays are a big contributor to that, and Lenovo fully realizes that, offering such large amounts of power in their devices. Hopefully we’ll see the trend catch on with other smartphone manufactures.

The Lenovo VIBE P1 will be available in October, while the VIBE P1m will go on sale mid-September. Pricing starts at $279 and $159, respectively. It will be available in select countries, and unfortunately, North America is not one of them.

Lenovo announces the VIBE S1, a dual-selfie camera smartphone

Lenovo-Vibe-s1-dual-camera

Lenovo is showing off a lot of products at IFA 2015 this week, and one of the more unique handsets the company is bringing to the market is the VIBE S1, what Lenovo is calling a “dual-selfie camera” phone.

The handset features a 64-bit MediaTek MT6752 1.7GHz Octa-core CPU, a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 FHD IPS display, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, microSD support up to 128GB, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 8-megapixel front camera, and a second 2-megapixel front-facing camera. It has a 2,500mAh battery and is running Android 5.0.

Lenovo-Vibe-S1-pearl-white

The Vibe S1 is unique in that it has two front-facing cameras, one with an 8-megapixel sensor, and another with a 2-megapixel snapper. The two cameras work together to create selfies better than you’ve ever seen before. There’s even a handful of built-in photo editing tools to truly unlock your creativity!

The Lenovo VIBE S1 will launch in November in Pearl White and Midnight Blue and will retail for $299 USD, likely on a new two-year contract. But there will no doubt be device payment plans with carriers where those are offered as well.

Any selfie experts out there excited for the Lenovo VIBE S1?

How to Get the Best Resale Price for Your iPhone 6, 6 Plus or 5s

With the “iPhone 6s” and “iPhone 6s Plus” expected to be announced at Apple’s September 9th media event, and released a few weeks later, now is the time for prospective upgraders to begin exploring trade-in and resale options for their current iPhone or Android-based smartphone.

iphone_lineup_2014
Getting the best value for your iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s or other current smartphone can help offset a significant portion of your next iPhone purchase, but resale and trade-in prices will drop significantly between now and the launch of new iPhones, so it is best to move fast.

MacRumors compared iPhone trade-in prices from various services using a 16GB iPhone 6 from AT&T as a baseline.

Trade-In Programs

gazelle_logo_lrgGazelle announced today that it is offering a Best Price Guarantee on iPhone 6, 6 Plus and 5s trade-ins until September 9th, promising to beat the trade-in values offered by Apple and carriers AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Gazelle’s Best Price Guarantee covers all storage sizes and colors and includes a 30-day grace period, meaning that you can lock in your trade-in price now and wait until you have your new iPhone before sending in your current one.

Average Price (16GB/AT&T): $301 (iPhone 6), $326 (iPhone 6 Plus), $166 (iPhone 5s)
Payment Method: Check by Mail, Amazon Gift Card, PayPal or Charitable Donation
Resale Method: Ship iPhone to Gazelle (Free)

nextworth_logo_NextWorth offers a similar trade-in service as Gazelle for the iPhone 4 through iPhone 6 Plus. NextWorth quotes are valid for 30 days, allowing you to lock in a trade-in price on your current iPhone and ship it after receiving your new iPhone.

NextWorth offers higher prices on average for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus than Gazelle, with trade-in values up to $480, although it depends on the specific model and condition of the smartphone. Completing a checklist about the condition of the smartphone is required.

Average Price (16GB/AT&T): $320 (iPhone 6), $360 (iPhone 6 Plus), $160 (iPhone 5s)
Payment Method: Check by Mail, Discover Prepaid Card, PayPal or Target Gift Card
Payment Process: Ship iPhone to NextWorth (Free)

amazon-1Amazon runs a trade-in store where you can search for the iPhone model that you want to trade in and receive a price quote. After answering a few questions about the condition of the smartphone and entering your shipping address, you can print off a shipping label to mail the iPhone for free in exchange for an Amazon Gift Card.

Average Price (16GB/AT&T): $360 (iPhone 6), $389 (iPhone 6 Plus), $175 (iPhone 5s)
Payment Method: Amazon Gift Card

Looking for a fitness-focused smartwatch? Motorola’s Moto 360 Sport is for you

motorola_moto_360_sport_white_black_official

Motorola’s smartwatch, the Moto 360, is known for being a design masterpiece. The stainless steel and round display are just some of what gives the Moto 360 its appeal. Its design, though, may not be ideal for consumers that want to use the Moto 360 while running or working out at the gym. Either the smartwatch will be uncomfortable to wear or likely nicked and perhaps damaged during any type of workout. Enter the Moto 360 Sport.

The Moto 360 Sport is Motorola’s first take on offering a wearable device to fitness enthusiasts. This smartwatch drops any signs of metal or leather in favor of a silicon construction that wicks away moisture and has ventilation on the band. And the display features a front-lit reflective technology that pairs with the traditional LCD display to keep the Moto 360 Sport visible at all times.

To really make this a smartwatch for people that are always active, Motorola included an on-board GPS. What exactly does it do? It allows users to track their speed, distance, and pace.

Battery life on the Moto 360 Sport is longer than any other Moto 360 generation or model, reaching for around two days of use.

Availability and pricing for the Moto 360 Sport will be announced within the next 3-4 weeks.

Canyon’s Smart Bike Computer puts Android Wear on your handlebars

When you’re cycling up a steep incline, hunched over the handlebars and desperately willing your legs to keep going, you don’t want to be messing around with your phone or a second-rate cycling computer. Bike manufacturer Canyon has teamed up with Sony to find a solution — and the fruits of their labor is the Smart Bike Computer. It runs on Android Wear, so the 1.6-inch touchscreen can display a bunch of popular cycling apps including Strava and Google Maps. The small, waterproof unit slides directly into the stem, ensuring the sleek stylings of your ride aren’t ruined, and can connect to your phone over Bluetooth. In addition, it boasts up to 8 hours of battery life, built-in GPS and 4GB of internal storage, so you can leave your handset at home and still use some of its essential features.

The downside? Canyon is calling it a “concept,” so there’s no guarantee it’ll hit store shelves. Having said that, the company is aiming for a spring 2016 release, with an estimated price of €200. Of course, you could always wear an Android Wear smartwatch, but having it directly on the bike could be useful if you take pedal-power seriously.

Android’s Google Now redesign helps make sense of your info

The new Google Now on a Nexus 5

Google didn’t just unveil a redesigned logo — it also gave Android’s Google Now a welcome refresh. Grab the updated Google app for Android and you’ll see that the once colorful info cards are both subtler and organized into clearly market categories, such as upcoming events, updates (think weather) and news stories. It’s considerably easier to manage if you regularly receive a flood of data. You have more options for customizing Google Now when you dismiss cards, too. If you haven’t already, swing by Google Play for the upgrade — it’ll take some getting used to (those colorful Google logos aren’t exactly subtle), but it’s worthwhile.
