PlayStation 4 jumps on the YouTube Gaming bandwagon
Believe it or not, the PlayStation 4 is almost two years old already. I know, i’m surprised too. To celebrate, Sony is rolling out its dashboard preview program and from the looks of it, firmware version 3.0 is positively massive and rife with some huge changes for the console. Let’s start at the top: online storage has been increased from a paltry 1GB to 10GB, which should make accessing all of your game saves where ever you are a ton easier. With the advent of YouTube Gaming comes the ability to livestream from Sony’s latest game console to Google’s video wing, much like you could already do via the system’s built-in Twitch functionality. And joining screenshots, you can share video clips to Twitter now too. Sadly, they’re limited to 10 seconds apiece.
Oh, and now you can bug a buddy to watch them playing a game with the “Request to Watch” feature. Sony’s VP of platforms marketing John Koller says that folks selected for the beta program will see the new tweaks “very soon” and warns that some of what’s listed here might not be in the update’s final version. The update, codenamed “kenshin” (rough translation: “dedication”), packs quite a few more features, and you can check those out over on the PlayStation Blog.

Ongoing Apple Campus 2 Progress Shown in High-Quality Aerial Video
Construction on Apple’s second campus in Cupertino is continuing at a steady pace, as seen in a new aerial video captured by drone pilot Duncan Sinfield and shared with MacRumors.
Shot earlier today, Sinfield’s video offers a detailed look at the progress Apple has made since he shot his last video on August 1, and it gives details on the different buildings Apple is constructing. Sinfield’s also cleverly overlaid some of Steve Jobs’ original commentary on the campus, making this video update well worth watching.
Work on the ring-shaped main building is continuing, as is construction on a multi-level underground parking structure. A secondary parking lot at the west of the campus is nearly finished, the auditorium has gained interior walls, and construction workers have also made progress on the Tantau development, housing research facilities.
When finished, the second Apple campus will feature a huge 2.8 million square foot ring-shaped main building, an underground parking lot, a 100,000 square foot fitness center, a 120,000 square foot auditorium for hosting events, and a dedicated visitor’s center complete with an observation deck, cafe, and Apple Store.
Apple continues to be on track to complete construction on the campus at the end of 2016.

PayPal announces a new way to request money using a personalized URL
PayPal, the popular money transferring service, has just announced a new way for users to easily request and send money by using a simple customized URL. The new payment method is called PayPal.Me, and allows you to create a URL that’s personalized to your own username which can be shared with anyone as a way to request money.
Previously, requesting money from others through PayPal was quite a hassle. You’d need to navigate to PayPal.com, log in, select the “request money” section and enter in another user’s email address to create the request. Now with PayPal.Me, most of those steps have been eliminated. After you create a custom URL (e.g. mine is paypal.me/jimmywestenberg), you can share the link with whomever you’d like through social media, over email, or through a text. Once the user opens the link and confirms the amount of money they’d like to send, that’s it.
You’ll need a PayPal account to sign up for PayPal.Me, but that’s about the only requirement. There’s no app to go along with PayPal.Me, though the website is optimized for mobile devices. For right now, the service is available in 18 countries, including the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, France and more.
To get started, head to PayPal.Me to sign up.
Google, Microsoft and Netflix team up on free video formats
It’s no secret that many tech companies hate video formats that are closed, cost money or both — enough so that they’ll drop popular standards and develop their own codecs. There hasn’t been a concerted attempt to tackle this problem, however, which is why several industry giants have just launched the Alliance for Open Media. Founding members Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix are working on a future video format that should be royalty-free, open to anyone and playable on just about any modern device. It’s still extremely early (the group hasn’t even said how others can join), but you should hear more about their efforts later this year.
While it’s not stated, the Alliance is effectively trying to make an end run around MPEG LA, the group that licenses big video formats like H.264 and H.265. If the Alliance can create a standard that catches on, it’d eliminate one of the common costs for offering video playback on devices and through the internet. However, that’s a big “if.” The tech industry is notorious for developing formats that either take ages to arrive or quickly fizzle out. Also, Apple isn’t one of the founders. Unless the Alliance can convince Apple to hop aboard, it may have trouble reaching the widest possible audience — just look at what happened when Cupertino refused to support Flash on its mobile hardware.
