Huawei teases MateS with Incredible Touch display, as new pictures leak

Huawei-Logo-2015-3

IFA is very nearly upon us and Huawei has just teased part of its announcement. The company seems to be planning to unveil a new MateS smartphone, which supposedly boasts some improved high-end specifications and new Incredible Touch, aka Force Sense, touchscreen technology.

This Force Touch technology is said to be the big new feature with the MateS and will allow for pressure-sensitive interactions with the smartphone’s display. It’s not exactly clear what Huawei has planned for this technology, but we will probably see some new UI features or gesture shortcuts. Judging from the teasers, “knocking” will also have something to do with it.

As for hardware specifications, the latest rumors point to a slightly smaller 5.7-inch display than the Mate7’s 6-inch panel. The resolution is said to be 1080p, while the phone will be powered by a Kirin 935 SoC and 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The phone is also said to come with a 20 megapixel rear camera and an 8 megapixel front facing camera, marking an all-around improvement over the already rather good Mate 7.

If you’re wondering what the handset looks like, pictures also leaked online earlier today, showcasing a familiar design and rear fingerprint scanner placement. The images appear very similar to the smartphone that leaked back at the beginning of August.

AT&T now rolling out Stagefright patch for the LG G4

LG_G4_From_NYC_02

Hot on the heels of T-Mobile, AT&T has now started rolling out a software update to all its carrier-branded variants of the LG G4 located in the United States. Sadly, this upgrade doesn’t bring any new features to the handset, but it does transport a patch for the open-source operating system’s Stagefright vulnerability.

As is the norm, the update is being rolled out in stages, but if you don’t feel like waiting for a notification confirming that it’s ready for your device to hit your unit, you could always search for the upgrade manually. To do so, open the Settings app, scroll to the bottom and tap on “About Device”, hit “System Updates”, then select “Check for updates”.

Apple reportedly bid for Clarkson and ‘Top Gear’ co-stars

It was quite a surprise when Amazon announced it had snapped up the Top Gear trio for a new show on Prime Instant Video. Many thought Netflix or Sky would win out, but now it’s emerged that another unlikely player was bidding for Clarkson and friends: Apple. According to Variety, the company made “an unprecedented bid” for the stars after they left the BBC. Ultimately, however, it must have been turned down. If Apple is indeed preparing its own original programming, it would make sense that the three British presenters were at the top of its wish list. Now the ball is in Amazon’s court; the company is desperate for a House of Cards-level hit, but aside from Transparent, it’s failed to make much headway. On Clarkson’s reputation alone, Bezos may finally get it with a Top Gear spiritual successor.

PayPal makes it even easier to call in your debts

PayPal.me Devices

While PayPal has made its name (and serious money) helping people pay for their online and in-store purchases, sending cash to friends or family takes a little bit longer than it needs to. That’s why the company created the Venmo app, but that’s only available to US users. Even though Venmo, Facebook Messenger and other peer-to-peer payment apps are gaining in popularity, many people still shy away from actually asking for the money they’re owed. In an attempt to take the friction out of asking for and receiving payments, the e-commerce giant has launched PayPal.me, a new service that makes requesting money as simple as sending someone a web link. Not only that, it’s a link that’ll never change.

If you live in one of the 18 countire PayPal.me currently supports (including the US and UK), you can sign up for your unique username today. When you do, you’ll then be given a paypal.me/username that can be shared with anyone at any time. The idea is that you won’t have to leave your current app or desktop window to request money, like you would in say Venmo or Facebook Messenger, you just pop your custom PayPal.me URL in an iMessage, Whatsapp, Hangouts, email or any other messaging service and have someone wire you cash in a matter of seconds (using their own PayPal account, of course).

PayPal.me

But what if you want to choose how much someone pays you? Well, you can append a figure to your PayPal.me web link, which autopopulates the amount the sender will transfer. For example, paypal.me/username/20 will let you ask for 20 pounds or dollars (or your local currency) — perfect for getting your Whatsapp group to stump up the cash for the dinner that you generously charged to your debit card.

PayPal says that payments will be completely free between users in the same country, but if you’re wiring money abroad or deduct funds from a credit card, you will charged an additional fee. While PayPal already offers numerous ways to ask for and receive money, PayPal.me offers the least amount of friction. Chances are that usernames will disappear pretty quickly, so reserve your unique ID while you can.

The full list of supported countries: US, UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, Russia, Turkey, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.

Sony Japan crowdfunds stylish Wena smartwatch

Sony Wena Wrist smartwatch

A couple of months ago, Sony launched its own crowdfunding platform, named First Flight, in Japan to help fund some of its new product ideas and the company has just posted a nice looking new smartwatch up on the website. Known as the “Wena Wrist”, the smartwatch shares a lot more in common with your typical wrist watch than the gadgets that we’ve become familiar with.

Unlike other smartwatches, the Wena Wrist doesn’t feature a display. Instead, it comes with a traditional analogue clock face, complete with actual hands. The smartwatch is packed with other pieces of technology though. There’s NFC compatibility for use with the FeliCa contact-less payment system in Japan, notifications from your phone can be received through a vibrator motor inside the watch and there’s a customizable LED light for extra alerts.

The Wena Wrist also supports the regular set of fitness tracking options, including steps made and calories burnt off in the day. A companion app can also be used to set targets and track your progress over time. The smartwatch is also rated for water resistance, a nice added bonus for the fitness enthusiast.

Interestingly, the smartwatch is built in two halves. The smart electronic parts of the watch are housed entirely in the wristband and can be charged up separately. The watch face will last anywhere from 3 to 5 years without a battery replacement, while the band can be detached and will need charging up approximately once a week.

This isn’t the first time that Sony has turned to group funding to scrape up investment for a new smartwatch idea. The company’s e-ink FES smartwatch appeared as a pre-order on the website a few months back.

The Wena Wrist is available for pre-order in Japan through First Flight, with prices ranging from ¥34,800 ($287) for a silver Three Hands model up to ¥69,800 ($576) for the Chronograph version in black. The smartwatch is expected to ship out to backers in March or April of 2016.

Latest look at ‘Halo 5’ is entirely devoid of Master Chief

If you were hoping to see more of Spartan 117 ahead of Halo 5: Guardians release this October, today isn’t your day. Sure, there’s a new trailer embedded below, but it isn’t gameplay. Nor does it tell us much about what’s going on with the game’s story (Dr. Halsey working alongside Covenant Elites is intriguing, though). It’s bombastic, pretty, and stars Nightfall protagonist Jameson Locke, but the clip ultimately rings a bit hollow. If you want to see what Nathan FIllion looks like after spending some time in the uncanny valley, however, you’re in for a treat. Everyone else that’s expecting some hot new footage of Master Chief on the battlefield will almost assuredly be disappointed, though.

LG trademarks “G4 Note”. New flagship incoming?

We know for a while that there will be another LG flagship phone this year. LG has confirmed as much. We’re expecting another LG flagship in the second half of 2015 and with only 3 months left, we’re running out of time. But we may be getting some indication of LG’s plans based on a trademark filing uncovered from the USPTO, the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

g4 note filing

We haven’t seen a ton of leaks of the G4 Note so far, one being back in March from XDA Developers. According to the leak, the G4 Note will feature a stylus that comes out of the top, unlike the Galaxy Note line which has theirs placed in the bottom of the phone. But can LG make something that beats Samsung at their own game? Part of the strength of the Note series is the stylus and from the leaks, the G4 Note’s appears to be really weak. Can we expect the same functionality from the Wacom Stylus, known as the S-Pen? The S-Pen and it’s software have had a nice evolution since it’s debut years ago. It makes your takes more convenient to complete. Can LG hope to match that?

g4 note stylus

We will see. A stylus, removable back, removable battery and Micro SD card slot are going to be very attractive to previous Note owners who are disappointed in the Note 5’s redesign and looking to upgrade.

You can now spend up to £30 on contactless cards

Contactless payments

More than ever before, the UK is embracing cashless payment methods such as debit and credit cards, phones and online banking. Some of that boom can be attributed to contactless payments, a technology that lets you pay with a card, fob, smartphone or wearable just by waving it in front of a reader. No signature or pin code required. The only problem, until now, has been the £20 limit on individual transactions. It meant contactless was fine for smaller purchases, but useless for anything substantial like a family supermarket shop. But thankfully, that limit is being increased today to £30.

What is contactless again?

Credit card

An ever-growing number of cards and devices support contactless payments. To find out if yours is compatible, look for the symbol — it looks like four horizontal ripples — or check with your device’s manufacturer. Then, whenever you walk into a shop with a compatible point-of-sale terminal, you can take it out and hold it in front of the reader. An embedded chip in your card or device holds your account information, while an antenna picks up the small electromagnetic field emitted from the reader. This invisible signal turns your contactless card or device “on,” and once the transaction has been completed, the terminal’s screen should turn green to indicate that it’s been successful.

Do I need to do anything now?

Nothing at all. Although, the new limit is being applied to terminals slowly as part of a new software update. That means, at least for the first few weeks, some stores will be limited to the old £20 restriction. It might sound obvious, but if you’re unsure it’s best to ask the cashier. And if it doesn’t work, you can always revert back to cash or chip-and-pin.

What about Apple Pay?

Apple Pay Launches In The UK

Apple’s payment service is, essentially, another form of contactless. That means it’s subject to the same in-store restrictions — so like your other cards and devices, it should support the new limit automatically. Once your favourite stores have had their terminals updated, you’ll be able to walk in and pay as normal with your iPhone or Apple Watch.

Why does this matter?

In short, you can buy more stuff now without using cash or chip-and-pin. It should make the technology more convenient and applicable in our everyday lives, and also help stores to do business more efficiently. The downside? Any device that supports contactless will now look more attractive to thieves. As always, look after your personal belongings and if you think your card has been stolen, call your bank immediately to get it blocked.

Another Silk Road spy pleaded guilty to laundering bitcoins

US-IT-FINANCE-BITCOIN

$820,000. That’s how much former Secret Service agent Shaun Bridges pilfered in bitcoin during his time investigating the online black market, Silk Road. Bridges pleaded guilty to money laundering and obstruction of justice recently and the Department of Justice says that it was analyzing the “block chain and data” from Silk Road’s servers that lead the breadcrumb trail of ill-gotten gains back to him. Bridges funneled his 20,000 bitcoins, at that time worth $350,000, through a series of “complex transactions” with a stop at Mt. Gox before transferring them into US dollars in early 2013. It isn’t nearly as flagrant as his colleague Carl Force’s transgressions (a movie deal? Seriously?), but the amount of money Bridges tried stealing was an awful lot higher.

As a lawyer for Silk Road mastermind Ross Ulbricht, Dread Pirate Roberts, tells Reuters that the charges Bridges faces illustrate “the corruption that pervaded” the entire Silk Road saga. He isn’t wrong, but since Ulbricht’s defense team has filed some five requests for a mistrial to date, it’s hard to take a lot of what he says seriously.
