Samsung to launch curated news app for its Galaxy phones

European digital publisher Axel Springer and Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung have announced a new strategic partnership that will see the two companies develop new digital media services for European customers. The first product to come out of this partnership is a news aggregation platform designed for Samsung customers.
The news aggregation service will be known as UPDAY, which will be making its debut in Germany and Poland in just a couple of day’s time, ahead of a roll out to other European markets next year. The service will feature ‘Need to Know’ information selected by a local market editorial team and ‘Want to Know’ information which will be generated automatically by an algorithm that is tailored to customers’ individual interests. It is not clearly exactly how much control Axel Springer will be exerting over the content delivered to users.
There don’t appear to be any plans to release the app on anything other than Galaxy handsets, so UPDAY will be an exclusive application for Samsung customers.
The early beta version of UPDAY will arrive on the Google Play Store and at Samsung’s GALAXY Apps service on Thursday September 3rd for users living in the supported countries.

Samsung’s creating its own curated news app for Galaxy devices
Apple isn’t the only one developing an exclusive news service for its mobile customers. Samsung has announced a partnership with Axel Springer, a publisher of European newspapers including Die Welt, Bild and Fakt, to develop a news platform called “UPDAY.” It’ll be exclusive to Samsung Galaxy devices, and a beta version is set to land in the Google Play store this Thursday. What isn’t clear, however, is how much content, if any, Axel Springer will be producing exclusively for the service. UPDAY is being pitched as an “aggregated news content platform,” with stories selected both algorithmically and by a local team of news editors. Initially, the app will be restricted to Galaxy device owners in Germany and Poland — the countries where Axel Springer is dominant — before rolling out to “other European markets” early next year. If it’s successful, or Samsung thinks it has potential, there’s every chance it’ll be launched further afield in the future.

Lizard Squad takes revenge on UK police with DDoS attack
Lizard Squad has claimed responsibility for a temporary takedown of the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) website, almost certainly in response to a series of arrests targeting customers of the hacker collective’s DDoS-for-hire service. Last week, the agency announced that UK police had apprehended six British teenagers for using Lizard Stresser, a tool developed by Lizard Squad which allows anyone to cripple websites with Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. All of the suspects were released on bail and the NCA said it would be visiting 50 addresses to issue warnings to registered users.
Clearly, what remains of Lizard Squad wasn’t happy with the news. Once the NCA’s site went down, the group quickly took responsibility on Twitter — shortly afterward, the agency confirmed it was dealing with a DDoS attack. At the time of writing the site is up and running, although it’s unclear if that’s because of the NCA’s efforts or Lizard Squad’s leniency. Regardless, it sends out a strong message — the hacker group is still operational, and until its members are rounded up there’s always a chance it’ll strike again.
