Line’s Android launcher swaps widgets for wabbits
For a while, it felt like Whatsapp and Line were bitter rivals in the mobile messaging war. The former had the user base (and later Facebook’s clout), but Line offered a family of apps and features like stickers, games and more recently music streaming. Line continues to follow it’s own path, by releasing an Android launcher. Now you can have Cony and Brown (you know who those are, right?) present in almost every corner of your phone’s interface.
You might remember that Line already has Deco, but that’s more of a selection of home screens. Line launcher, takes things up a notch, with themed widgets, icons and other utilities (cute-ilities?). These include useful things like a delightful rabbity battery-level indicator, and even spruces up such mundane things as a memory-management app. The launcher is free (but there’s still lots of stickers you can buy), and is available to cute-up your phone now.

CyanogenMod gets Android 5.1 and Stagefright security fixes
If you’ve been sitting on pins and needles waiting for the community-focused CyanogenMod firmware to both make the leap to Android 5.1 and fix that nasty Stagefright MMS exploit, you can relax. Hot on the heels of Cyanogen OS 12.1 (for devices like the OnePlus One), CyanogenMod 12.1 is arriving with both the perks from Android 5.1.1 as well as a Stagefright patch that theoretically keeps you safe. There are also Stagefright fixes for CyanogenMod 11 and 12.0, in case you can’t run the new operating system right away. There are a lot of devices to cover with this rollout, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see a download right away — if your phone or tablet is already running CyanogenMod’s decidedly non-standard code, there’s probably an update waiting in the wings.

OnePlus One handset explodes while charging overnight
A really unlucky OnePlus One owner recently had their handset explode into flames while charging it overnight. Fortunately, the user was unharmed in the incident.
This past weekend, a OnePlus One user awoke in the middle of the night near 2-AM to the smell of fire. He shortly realized that his OnePlus One handset was in smoke and flames beside him. Luckily, he threw the handset away from his bed and managed to be okay. Nobody can be exactly sure to why the incident took place. Most signs point to a battery explosion due to fully exposed battery in the pictures below.
OnePlus customer service said they would replace the handset, but also mentioned that there is not much the company can do about it. The company definitely has some explaining to do as to why this occurred. If the user didn’t awake in his sleep, it could of took his life. The pictures below contain what was left of the handset after the explosion.

Lollipop gets officially Xposed
Xposed is now officially official on Lollipop. This means that people on Android 5.1 Lollipop who want to customize their Android experience without installing a custom ROM can now do so.

For those not familiar with the Xposed framework, what it does is, allow someone to modify their stock ROM with customized modules. Xposed itself does not modify the ROM in any other way, other than providing the framework to do so. Instead, Xposed requires modules to be downloaded that modify certain aspects of the ROM.
Why would anyone who wants to modify their ROM not just install a custom ROM like Cyanogenmod? I think that people that have specialized devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note series don’t necessarily want to lose things like the S Pen functionality, so this becomes their only way to modify the device’s core functionality to suit their needs.
In my case, I use an Asus PadFone X that has a tablet dock. Any custom ROMs currently available do not support the tablet dock. This is a real deal killer for me as it’s the only reason to have a PadFone. My solution? Xposed framework. I’ve been able to customize my lock screen, tweak the status bar, add screen recording, and custom screen off animations.
Of course in order to use Xposed, you’ll need to first root your phone, but if you’re interested in trying it out feel free to check it out at XDA developers.
Keep in mind that if you are using a Samsung phone running Lollipop, you’ll need to find a modified version of Xposed, because of the way that Samsung has modified the ART runtime. Also, certain Sony phones have shipped with a corrupted services.odex (the embedded .dex is invalid). Those ROMs will boot loop with a “Fatal signal 6” error.
What do you think? Are going to take Xposed for a spin? Let us know in the comments below.

Sound Guys Monthly – Jaybird X2 International Giveaway
The summer doesn’t generally see a whole lot of new information when it comes to audio, but the lead up to IFA often sees a lot of interesting announcements, and this August was no different. It’s already spoiled in the title, but we’re still glad to say that we’re giving you a chance to get your hands on one of the summer’s most exciting releases, compliments of Sound Guys. Read on for all the details.
SparkBlocks: A speaker system with a Phonebloks approach
This isn’t the first modular speaker that we’ve seen, but it is one of the nicer looking ones, and the open-source approach is interesting. Unfortunately the Kickstarter campaign failed to meet its funding goal, but the company being SparkBlocks isn’t giving up on the project.
The Divoom Aurabox is a Bluetooth speaker/LED light board
Have you ever wished that someone would combine a Blueooth speaker with a Lite-Brite? Well it doesn’t matter because Divoom has done it anyway. What’s surprising is that the lights on the front of the Aurabox are actually functional in addition to simply being pretty.
At long last, a successor to the Infamous Jaybird BlueBuds X
Ask anyone to name some of the best Bluetooth in-ears out there, and chances are good that the Jaybird BlueBuds X will pop up. With the release of the new Jaybirds X2, which have dropped the BlueBuds name from the branding, we have a feeling that a new go-to recommendation has just been born.
Monoprice bringing superior sound yet again at an unbeatable price point
If you’re even a little familiar with Sound Guys, you’ve probably noticed that we’re big fans of Monoprice. Few companies manage to make headphones that impress bargain hunters and professional sound engineers alike, and now the company has released three new pairs of affordable headphones.
RHA to unveil the S500i at IFA 2015
We’ve had the pleasure of reviewing both the RHA T10 and T20 pairs of in-ears, and while both sound fantastic, they’re not the more afforable in-ears around. The company’s new S500i aim to keep the killer sound and sleek style of the T-series, but bring the price into a more approachable range.
Coolest of the month: Trinity Audio Delta
Like RHA’s T10 and T20, the Trinity Audio Delta offer tunable filters to allow the listener to sculpt the sound to their liking. The Deltas, on the other hand, sell for $100 less. If that sounds like a deal to you, you’re right: it is.
Best bang for the buck: Motorola Pulse
Cheap in-ears are a dime a dozen, but looking for a decent pair of on-ear headphones for $50 isn’t as easy. The Motorola Pulse might not feature earth-shaking bass, but they do offer great vocal clarity and an impressive 18-hour battery life.
Jaybird X2 Giveaway
First thing’s first, let’s take a moment to congratulate the winner of August’s giveaway: Anuj B. from India. The Bose SoundLink Mini 2 is all yours. Congratulations!
Now for this month’s giveaway. We’re currently in the middle of reviewing the Jaybird X2, and we can easily say that these are better than their predecessor in every way — from the improved battery life to the new SignalPlus, which is meant to eliminate interference. Our review will be live later this month, but in the meantime, enter to win yourself a pair below!

Nintendo opens digital download store on Amazon
US Amazon users can now buy Nintendo titles like Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U through a digital download space on Amazon. According to the page, you can purchase one of the 61 titles listed, including Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and Yoshi’s Island, then just click the Nintendo Network link on the ‘thank you’ page. From there, the content code will be automatically redeemed and the game sent directly to your Wii U or 3DS console. The new store means there’s now another way to purchase downloadable games other than through Nintendo’s eShop — even though it still comes directly from Nintendo.
Pricing on Amazon seems to be the same as Nintendo’s eShop — Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 on Wii U are the same $59.99 on both sites. However, it’s possible that Amazon will have the odd sale or deal (we’ve reached out for more info). Until recently, Amazon didn’t even stock Nintendo consoles itself, choosing to just fulfill orders from other retailers on its site. That led some folks to speculate that there was some kind of feud going on, though neither side ever confirmed that. Recently, however, Amazon started selling the 3DS XL and some other bundles after several years of not doing so. And the new store seems a sign that any dispute — real or imagined — is now in the past.

Steam’s selling all four ‘Mad Max’ films along with the game
Steam has revealed that along with the new Mad Max game you’ll be able to buy all four films, from the 1979 Mel Gibson original to this year’s Fury Road. Valve does very little promotion for movies on Steam, but said in a press release that it has 100 titles to date, which sent me scurrying to check that fact. And yes! Sort of. There are titles for sale, but all are either documentaries (including its own) or straight-to-video fare like Let’s Ruin it with Babies and Kung Fury.
That makes the Mad Max series the biggest titles Steam has stocked, so is Valve going to sell more blockbusters? We’ve reached out for info, but a Warner Bros. rep said that the site “is the ideal place to launch (the game) and the full collection of films together.” With that comment, we’d guess that Steam might do more game and film launch tie-ins, but don’t expect them to go all Amazon Prime Instant. The Mad Max game ($60) and four films ($15-20) are now available on Steam as separate purchases in the US and Canada, and will roll out over the next month in Europe and the UK.

Ex-Apple Executive Ian Rogers Joins LVMH as Chief Digital Officer
After it was announced that he would be leaving the company last week, former Apple Music senior director Ian Rogers has found his next position as the Chief Digital Officer for the French luxury company LVMH (via Re/code).
After moving to Paris for the job, Rogers will use his history in the digital space to help bolster the brands of the company, which include high-end items from Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Bvlgari. LVMH is also the parent company of luxury watch brand TAG Heuer.
So here are the details: Rogers will leave California and move to Paris, where he will be chief digital officer at LVMH, the holding company behind iconic luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Bvlgari.
Prior to the LVMH job, Rogers has spent his entire life working in digital music: He started out helping the Beastie Boys get online, ran Yahoo Music for a while, and was CEO of Beats Music before Apple acquired the company in 2014. At Apple, he helped the company retool Beats Music into Apple Music, and focused in particular on Beats1 online music.
Today’s news confirms last week’s rumor that the former Apple executive would be joining an undisclosed “Europe-based company in an unrelated industry.” Rogers was originally from Beats, and was brought into the Cupertino company last year following the $3 billion acquisition deal. At Apple, he oversaw the launch of Beats 1 and hired lead DJ Zane Lowe to anchor the radio station.
Land Rover’s ‘Transparent Trailer’ makes your horse box invisible
Land Rover doesn’t see why towing a caravan or horse box should get in the way of rear visibility. The luxury SUV-maker has created a concept system that shows drivers what’s behind them as if the rear-window is free from obstructions. The idea is pretty simple: a camera on the towed object beams images of what’s behind it to a display embedded in the vehicle’s rear-view mirror. Land Rover already came up with something similar that makes hoods “transparent,” and this idea is an extension of that.
Another camera, and a pressure sensitive mat alerts drivers via SMS or an app, if the cargo (in this case, a horse) moves while in transit, and there are graphic overlays to help with tricky reverse parking. The focus of the “Transparent Trailer” is on Land Rover’s equestrian set (there are plans to make the mat spot hoof movements, for example), but the technology could easily be repurposed for any delicate load, or to be useful for those of us who can’t afford a pony. See it in action in the video below, where a typical Land Rover-owning couple (with two Range Rovers, a huge diamond ring, and a race horse of course) use it to complete a safe journey to the stables.

The Walking Dead: Road to Survival is the latest game to immerse you in a zombie’s world
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Sometimes I honestly wonder whether Robert Kirkman knew that when he created The Walking Dead, he was creating a world that would be one of the most recognizable in the modern entertainment age. The latest to take advantage of Kirkman’s post-apocalyptic zombie-filled world is The Walking Dead: Road to Survival, a new mobile game on Android and iOS that takes a slightly different route than previous The Walking Dead games on mobile. In Road to Survival, you’ll have ample situations to take on zombies with a team that you have assembled as well as built up defenses at a home base that you have established. Amongst all this, you’ll also have to make tough decisions that people familiar with The Walking Dead series will know all too well.
If you’re a fan of the TV show, you’ll be happy to know that characters from the show will be prevalent in the game itself including Rick, Michonne and the Governor as you try to survive the horrors of Road to Survival. Published by Scopely, Road to Survival operates on a free-to-play model which includes in-app purchases, though we’ll give the game the benefit of the doubt for now. If Road to Survival sounds like your cup of tea, we’ve included the Play Store link for you below:
