GoPro wants you to make short videos on your action camera

So you want to put your latest action camera footage on Instagram or Vine, but you’d rather not transfer the entire video to your computer or phone just to produce a seconds-long highlight. What to do? As of today, GoPro has an easy answer. It’s rolling out a trimming feature that produces short, share-worthy clips, whether you’re editing in the mobile app or on the camera itself — you could post a video of your mountain bike adventures while you’re still taking a breather. You’ll need a full-size Hero4 to trim on-camera, but the Hero4 Session and any other WiFi-capable GoPro cam will play nicely with app-based trimming.

The Turing Phone’s ship date and its Dark Wyvern edition are announced
Late this past week, Turing Robotic Industries (TRI) stated December 18, 2015 as the ship date for its Turing Phone, a cipher phone made of material stronger than steel. The company also announced Foxconn Group as its manufacturing partner.
Here are some dates to keep in mind for those interested in the phone:
- September 21st, 2015: “Circle of Friends” invites become ready for those who reserved the phone during the initial reservation period
- September 24th, 2015: the special edition Dark Wyvern becomes available (full payment required); people who reserved the phone will be notified to pay in full with an optional upgrade to the Dark Wyvern edition available
- December 18th, 2015: The Turing Phone ships
The Dark Wyvern edition, named after the Wyvern, a flying, mythical creature associated with stealth, has two options. First, there is the standard Dark Wyvern for $999. Lastly, the Dark Wyvern Glaedr will be available for $1,299. Only 3,000 units of the Glaedr will be produced, with more information about the variant to be announced on September 9th, 2015. Both will have 128GB of internal storage.
The site for the Turing Phone has Android 5.1 Lollipop as the OS. Android, of course, is the most targeted mobile platform for malware, at about 5,000 new strains per day.
With this in mind, I have to wonder if TRI will consider integrating an antimalware solution into its Turing Phones in the future. “Ultra-secure” appears to apply just to encrypted communication, at least for now. Although, you could argue that users who’d buy such a device are quite tech-savvy and already have their antimalware app of choice.
But what are your thoughts about the Turing Phone? Would you be interested in buying a cipher phone?

First trailer for Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes drops, looks quite strong in the Force
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
When video games publisher EA takes on our beloved franchises, we can’t help but feel on edge – EA is currently working on several Star Wars titles, one of which is Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes which was announced at E3 earlier this year. While EA didn’t have anything to show at that time, it appears they are ready to show the first trailer for the game, which you can check out below:
As you can no doubt tell from the trailer, Galaxy of Heroes takes the form of a turn-based RPG where the player collects characters to strengthen their team as they please, and then level them up to make them a more formidable team. It’s a tried and true genre, and the game actually looks quite good. It remains to be seen whether the game will feature microtransactions and how heavy-handed they will be if they are there, but we can’t help but be a little nervous given EA’s track record *cough* Dungeon Keeper *cough*.
What do you think about the first trailer for Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

10 best new Android apps and games from August 2015
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3vkEai-hks
August has come and gone and with it marks the beginning of the end of the season. It also left us with a bunch of awesome new Android apps and games! Let’s take a quick look at the best ones released this last month.
Fallout Shelter
[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Fallout Shelter turned a lot of heads when it was released on iOS back at E3 2015 and turned even more once it was released on Android. It’s a sim builder where you must create a Vault for survivors and help coax the new community into thriving. It comes packed with things to do including building rooms, exploring the wasteland, and even making babies. There is plenty of that classic Fallout quirkiness to make it feel authentic.

Final Fantasy Portal App
[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Fans of the Final Fantasy series got a new application this last month that lets them stay up to date on the latest Final Fantasy news. On top of that, the app also includes the Triple Triad card game from Final Fantasy VIII with an updated deck that allows you to collect characters from most games in the series. You can also play the original Final Fantasy right from the application. It’s about as good as it gets for a portal app.

FishBrain
[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
FishBrain is an application developed specifically for those who like to go fishing. It’s a crowd sourced application which means other people using the app are the ones providing the data and you can see what fish are biting, where they’re being caught, and there is even a built-in competition where you can climb leaderboards in your favorite fishing spots. It’s a fun little app for anglers and it’s free to download.

Focus
[Price: Free / $2.79]
Focus is a new gallery application with a lot of fun features. It includes an extensive tagging system that allows you to organize and easily find your photos. You can also sort by date and it comes with gif support along with support for pretty much any other image. If you go premium, you have even more organization and security features, a dark theme, and much more. It’s a powerful app with a light touch and it’s easy to use.

Framed
[Price: $0.99]
Framed is a new puzzle game out of Noodlecake Studios and it is actually really fun. The premise is you have a bunch of movie panels that play short video clips. Your job is to arrange them in their logical order so that the right actions happen. If you do, you can advance and if not then you fail the level. It also comes with a decent soundtrack, plenty of game play, and a cheap price tag. It’s definitely a different kind of puzzle game.

Lara Croft GO
[Price: $4.99]
Lara Croft GO is a new puzzle game out of Square Enix where you raid abandoned ruins as the famous Lara Croft. It’s a board-game style puzzler where you must move around, solve puzzles, find hidden items, and kill bad guys to continue on to the next level. It’s beautifully designed, easy to play, and it does feel a bit like a Tomb Raider game. It’s a bit expensive for how short it is, but it is a very well executed game.

Mirrativ
[Price: Free]
Mirrativ is a brand new application that allows you to broadcast pretty much anything on your device to the world. Before, there were ways to do it with games and broadcasting your camera like Periscope. This allows you to stream anything on your phone and allows people to watch and comment. It’s a unique premise but it is in beta so expect some bugs. It’s also only usable by devices running Android 5.0 or higher.

Pac-Man 256
[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Pac-Man 256 is an infinite runner version of the classic Pacman game. However, unlike most bastardizations where the infinite runner aspect makes the game feel hollow, Pac-Man 256 actually still feels like Pac-Man. You still deal with ghosts and you must eat pellets to increase your score, but now you have to do it fast enough to not die. It’s surprisingly good for a Freemium game and worth checking out.
Get it now on Google Play!
Webmaker
[Price: Free]
Mozilla quietly released an application earlier this month called Webmaker. This nifty little application allows you to create web pages right from your device. You don’t need a lot of web design experience although from what I’ve seen, a little HTML and CSS knowledge certainly doesn’t hurt. The app is also open source which is always a good thing and comes with a variety of templates to play with. It’s also totally free.
Get it now on Google Play!

YouTube Gaming
[Price: Free]
Last and certainly not least this month is YouTube Gaming. Google’s competitor to Twitch is now in the wild and the accompanying app is made to help people find the channels and games they want to watch. It’s a totally free application and it’s easy enough to use. It also comes with notifications to let you know when live streams are starting, chat rooms, and a lot more. It’s going to be fun and we’ll be there very soon.

Samsung officially unveils the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic
Since the folks in the far east are ahead of us, those of us in the US are ready to feast our eyes on a new treat. After plenty of teasing and flirting around with a new smartwatch, Samsung has officially announced the Samsung Gear S2 ahead of this week’s IFA conference in Berlin.
The Gear S2 is a circular device which puts it up to par with actually looking like a watch, at least in the overall design. Under the hood, you won’t find any traditional mechanisms. Instead, you’ll find the following goodies:
- 1.2″ Circular Super AMOLED
- 360×360 resolution with 302ppi
- Dual core 1.0 GHz processor
- 4GB storage
- 512MB RAM
- IP68 Dust and Water Resistant
- 250mAh Li-ion battery
Two more things to take note of with the Gear S2 are the rotating bezel and the fact that the Gear S2 will be running Samsung’s Tizen OS and NOT Android Wear. The Rotating Bezel on the Gear S2 will help out with the management of notifications, as well as the built-in Back and Home buttons on the side of the watch.
The inclusion of Tizen, and exclusion of Android Wear, means that your device won’t be privy to all of the fun Android Wear apps that continue to hit the Play Store. Regardless of that, Samsung promises that there will be plenty of apps available out of the box that will still provide a great experience for everyone.
The Gear S2 will also feature NFC, so that users will be able to easily make mobile payments on the go. There will more than likely be some type of syncing with Samsung Pay, once that has finally rolled out to everyone.
There are also two different versions of the Gear S2. Samsung is introducing the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic for those who like some options. The Gear S2 is tuned more so towards the “traditional” geek, while the Gear S2 Classic is geared towards the person who likes the look of a traditional watch. The difference between the two is that the Gear S2 Classic will feature “an elegant Black finish with a matching genuine leather band”.
On the heels of the announcement, a few of the carriers have already taken the time to announce whether they will or will not be carrying the Gear S2:
- T-Mobile
- Verizon
- AT&T
- US Cellular

Sprint has not officially announced whether they will be carrying Gear S2, but it’s only a matter of time before we hear from the number 4 carrier in the US.
Pricing and availability haven’t been announced in regards to Gear S2, however we can expect to learn more at IFA 2015 later this week. Let us know what you think about Samsung’s newest smartwatch and whether this is now on your radar.

Nintendo’s smaller New 3DS comes to the US on September 25th
When Nintendo decided to release only the New 3DS XL in the US this winter rather than its smaller New 3DS sibling, it left many scratching their heads. Why would Nintendo deprive American gamers of a smaller, more travel-friendly handheld? Well, it’s making amends for that mistake very shortly. Nintendo has revealed that it’s bringing the New 3DS to the US on September 25th as part of a $220 Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer bundle. So long as you like having the game’s charming art plastered all over your handheld, you too can have a more portable option. The NFC Reader (needed to load up on Amiibo figurines and card) will also arrive that day for $20.
Unfortunately, it looks like you won’t have an option for a plain vanilla New 3DS, at least not yet. Unlike with the New 3DS XL, that Animal Crossing bundle is all you’re getting — you may actually pay more than you would for the XL if you weren’t bent on receiving a game alongside your system. It won’t be shocking if Nintendo eventually expands the selection, but it’s clear that the larger device remains the star of the show.

Malware swipes 225,000 Apple accounts through jailbroken iPhones
Jailbreaking an iPhone gives you the freedom to run the apps and interfaces you want (rather than those allowed by Apple), but it also carries some inherent risks — you’re giving apps much more control over your phone. And unfortunately, some of these users are discovering this the hard way. Researchers have discovered a strain of iOS malware, nicknamed KeyRaider, that has stolen over 225,000 Apple IDs from jailbroken devices. The software takes advantage of Chinese app repositories that let people directly upload and share their own titles. If you happen to download the code, it’ll either scoop up your Apple account data (to give rogue users “free” apps) or hold your phone for ransom.
The attack isn’t possible if you’re running unmodified versions of iOS, so you don’t have any reason to panic if you’re already playing it safe. There’s also a way for technically savvy users to protect themselves without giving up that precious jailbreak. However, this could represent a big problem in China and other countries where it’s relatively common to jailbreak iPhones. KeyRaider could thrive simply because it has a large number of potential targets.

Samsung officially announces Gear S2 and S2 Classic

After plenty of leaks, hints, and teasers, Samsung has now formally announced the round Gear S2 smartwatch ahead of IFA 2015. As the FCC listings previously alluded to, the Gear S2 will launch in both a regular and classic edition. The Gear S2 has a more sporty and modern look in either dark gray or silver with a white band, while the classic has a black finish and matching leather band that gives it a more elegant and traditional aesthetic.
Both models of the Gear S2 feature the same specs, including a dual-core 1GHz processor, a 1.2-inch circular display with a resolution of 360 x 360, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage, IP68 dust/water resistance, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC for mobile payments, and a variety of sensors such as an accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, ambient light, and barometer. Samsung says the 250mAh battery will last about 2 to 3 days and will recharge using wireless technology. As for the controls, the Gear S2 offers a rotating bezel, as well as a home and back button for easily dealing with notifications.
As you’d expect, the Gear S2 runs on Tizen and that means you won’t have the large library of Android Wear apps, but Samsung says they have a number of built-in apps ready to go and are working with developers to quickly expand their library. Judging by their past watches, it is likely that the Gear S2 will only be compatible with select Samsung devices, but with Android Wear branching out into iOS territory, it is possible Samsung will broaden support this time around to better keep up with the competition.
We don’t know pricing or release details for the Gear S2 just yet, though we imagine that Samsung will clarify their plans at IFA. What do you think based on what we know so far?
Lara Croft GO review

At this point, I think it’s fair to say that Square Enix as a whole is one of the more popular game developers in the Android space. Aside from the extremely popular Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Chaos Rings franchises, the developer’s Montreal-based offices have brought us hit titles such as the original Tomb Raider, Lara Croft: Relic Run and Hitman GO.
Square Enix Montreal released the turn-based puzzler Hitman GO to the Play Store last year, and for many, it quickly became one of the most popular titles available on mobile devices. So in an effort to marry two of the developer’s most successful franchises – Hitman GO and Tomb Raider – Square Enix has just released a new game called Lara Croft GO.
I’ve spent some quality time with this new game, and I think there are some important things you should know about it. Here’s everything you need to know about Lara Croft GO.
Be sure to check out a recording of Joe Hindy playing Tomb Raider Go and giving his impressions on Twitch.
Story

Before we get into the game’s mechanics, let’s talk about why you’re here. You play as none other than Lara Croft, navigating through an ancient civilization in hopes to uncover the myth of the Queen of Venom. I’m going to be entirely honest here – I wouldn’t know that if I didn’t read through the game’s Play Store description. There’s no dialogue in the game whatsoever, which makes it very difficult to know what exactly you’re trying to accomplish in the grand scheme of things.

Still, though, short-term goals in the game are quite easy to understand – avoid or kill enemies, collect ancient relics to unlock new outfits and do your best to make your way through each map. The game is split up into five different chapters: The Entrance, The Maze of Snakes, The Maze of Stones, The Maze of Spirits and The Escape. There are 75 puzzles in all, and you need to complete every one to finish the game.
Gameplay

Much like its predecessor, Lara Croft GO is a turn-based puzzler that’s proven to be quite addictive. To navigate around the board, you simply swipe in the direction you’d like to move. There are no limitations on the number of moves you can make, which is something I needed to get used to from playing Hitman GO. With Hitman GO, I’d spend minutes at a time plotting every move to make sure I completed each level with the appropriate amount of moves. In Lara Croft GO, however, you can essentially navigate around as much as you’d like, which gives you much more freedom.
In order to make your way to the end of each level (usually signified by a glowing door or cave), you’ll need to defeat or avoid the onslaught of enemies standing in your way. There are three main enemies in Lara Croft GO: snakes, lizards and spiders. Snakes stay in one place and will attack if you walk right in front of them, while spiders move around a certain path with every move you take. Lizards are by far the most annoying of the bunch, as they follow you around the game board if you get too close. These enemies can sometimes be used to your advantage to hold down platform switches or to help open doors.

Remember: take your time
You can kill enemies by sneaking up behind them with your knife or by throwing spears. Fire can also be used to scare them away, allowing you to corner them or move them around the game board any way you’d like.
One thing should be noted when it comes to gameplay style, though, and it’s something that I often forget with this title. There is no limit on time or number of moves you can make. It’s easy to forget this when a giant lizard is chasing you around, or when a giant serpent is staring you down one space away. Just remember to take your time and carefully think about each move, otherwise you’ll end up starting each level over more times than you’d like.

The first few levels are quite easy, and that’s alright. This allows you to get familiar with how the game works, how each enemy functions and what exactly you’re trying to accomplish. Once you start getting into the third and fourth chapters, though, each level gets significantly more difficult. I’ve had to put the game down due to sheer frustration at times, which, in hindsight, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s challenging enough to keep you playing over a long period of time, yet satisfying enough to keep you interested.

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Throughout the game, you’ll find little jars scattered around each level which hold pieces of lost relics. Once you collect all of the pieces to a certain relic, you’ll unlock new outfits for Lara Croft. Relics can be extremely hard to find in some levels, while sometimes they’re waiting for you out in the open. It’s easy to miss them at times, but really, they’re not all that important.
Relics don’t unlock anything more than extra outfits, so don’t expect any special weapons or abilities to come from collecting them all.
Final thoughts

Lara Croft GO is available in the Google Play Store for $4.99. It doesn’t feature any advertisements, and the small amount of in-app purchases are completely hidden from plain sight. In fact, if I didn’t go snooping around in some of the menus, I’d think this game is in-app purchase-free. If you’d like to spend some extra cash when you’re playing though, there are only two that I can find. You can spend $1.99 to unlock the Square Enix Universe Outfit Pack, which lets you change Lara’s appearance with outfits from Hitman GO, Deus Ex and Just Cause. The other one I found gives you a solution to every puzzle in the game for a flat rate of $4.99. I’m still trying to figure out why this is an option.
All in all, you should play Lara Croft GO. It’s a beautiful, addicting and challenging title that will keep you interested for a long time. Unlike ustwo’s Monument Valley which was incredibly short, it took me a few days to finish Lara Croft GO. It may not be as lengthy as some would like, but I believe it’s still worth the money.
Lara Croft GO is a must-buy, as long as you can get past one major caveat
The only real complaint I have is regarding the story. Maybe it’s because I was spoiled by Monument Valley’s mysterious storyline, but I can’t help but think Square Enix missed the mark here. I’ve finished the game, and aside from successfully completing 75 unique puzzles, I don’t really feel like I know any more information about the Queen of Venom or any of the ancient relics I collected along the way.
If you can get past that aspect, though, Lara Croft GO is a must-buy. Have you played Lara Croft GO? If so, how do you like it? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
