If you like Pong, you will love Upong

Upong logoFans of the old school Pong game will be happy to try a new modern take on it. Upong is basically the same idea as Pong only the elements on screen are always moving and progressing.

You really need fast thinking and reflexes in order to predict exactly where to place the ball as obstacles are always coming at you. The longer you last, the higher your score will be. There are also different difficulty levels that have harder obstacles as well as power ups. Also, there is the ability to earn money in order to buy new colors, sizes, and designs of the pad.

As you can see from the video, this is much more difficult compared to normal Pong.

Find and book cheap plane tickets with Hopper

Hopper logoThe goal of Hopper is to help people find cheap airline tickets. It’s newest update not only helps you find cheap tickets, but also allows you to book them through the app.

Before on iOS, Hopper sent users elsewhere to book the tickets and were unable to track whether users actually booked the tickets or not. However, that hasn’t stopped them from almost hitting 1 million downloads and making their way to Android!

The way it works:

Hopper helps travelers save time and money by analyzing billions of flight prices a day to provide advice on when to fly and buy. Our expert guidance saves a typical Hopper user approximately $50 on their flight (and, in the best cases, as much as $1,300).

Hopper is basically like a travel agent in your pocket. You don’t have to worry about date combinations in order to find the cheapest times to fly. Hopper has a color-coded “When To Fly Calendar” which shows you the cheapest times to travel to where you want to go.

It also can determine if you should buy tickets now or wait a little longer in order to get cheaper tickets. Hopper uses “an archive of a trillion flight prices to predict future prices your trip”. Almost always, if you pick the “buy” or “wait” recommendation, you will get a cheaper flight from your initial search.

My favorite part about Hopper is it can watch the prices for you. If you select “Watch a Trip”, Hopper starts monitoring prices and will alert you to any price drops or possible rises. The alerts are in real time to make sure you don’t miss the best deal.

State Dept. releases more Hillary Clinton emails, around 150 classified

DEM 2016 Clinton

As the saga over Hillary Clinton’s emails from her time as Secretary of State continues, the State Department tonight released the largest bundle of recovered messages yet. Amounting to some 7,000 pages, officials told Reuters they include some 150 emails marked as classified, which have had passages redacted. The Clinton campaign continues to maintain that her use of a private email server was not a problem, and that many messages were classified later, but not at the time they were originally sent. So what’s in the database? You can search it yourself, to find tidbits including Clinton asking for the broadcast times of Parks & Recreation and The Good Wife and an entirely odd one marked “Gefilte Fish.” In another, she asks adviser Huma Abedin to teach her how to use a new iPad when it arrived in June 2010. Riveting stuff.

Qualcomm Smart Project will feature on Snapdragon 820 to halt malware attacks

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Qualcomm has been very proactive lately in trying to secure devices with its hardware inside and the benefit of Qualcomm’s solutions are that they done in the device, not in the cloud as other solutions attempt. Their latest attempt at this is the Qualcomm Smart Project which will feature in the Snapdragon 820 in an attempt to stop malware ever getting a hold on your device. Thanks to the Zeroth machine learning technology on Qualcomm’s new processor, Qualcomm Smart Protect will be able to not only figure out what malware has infected the device, but also whether it has changed form based on a known database. Check out Qualcomm’s video describing its new technology:

Malware has shown itself to be one of the primary growing threats to mobile platforms and having hardware manufacturers on board trying to combat it will go a long way to making our devices safer and more secure. While the Snapdragon 820 is shaping up to be a performance beast, it’s always nice to know that it has the security credentials to match too.

AT&T rolling out Stagefright patch for LG G4

lg-g4-color-comparison-aa-9-of-11

Still worried about the Stagefright vulnerability that could grant attackers control over your device with a simple MMS message? This issue left 95% of all Android users susceptible to attacks, but carriers and manufacturers have been quick to patch it up. It’s taking some companies more time than others, though.

Life is finally good again fore LG G4 users on AT&T. The carrier has started pushing out the Stagefright patch, taking many of you back to digital safety. It comes in the form of an OTA software update and seems to feature no other extra improvements.

lg g4 review aa (24 of 34)

All you need is enough battery life to go through the process and a stable WiFi connection for downloading the data. Got that set up? Simply wait for the upgrade notification to show up. You can also go ahead and check for updates in the settings, just in case the device is taking a little longer than it should. Do keep in mind these updates tend to roll out periodically, though, so try not to smash your screen.

Once all is said and done, you should be left with Android 5.1 Lollipop on software version H81010l. The file is 46.7 MB, so make sure you have enough space too. Enjoy your peace of mind!

All four major US carriers will reportedly sell the Samsung Gear S2

Samsung Gear S2 shoot crop

Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch, previously referred to as Project Orbis or the Gear A, has finally been formally announced. Two main models will be released, the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic to allow consumers more choice in what they wear. There will also be cellular models that can make use of 3G network services, and according to a report by SamMobile, all four major U.S. carriers will sell them.

While AT&T and Sprint have yet to actually post their plans, both Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile have already taken to Twitter to tell the world what is in store for their stores:

Note that Verizon in particular, mentions selling a “Bluetooth” model – which probably refers to the Wi-Fi only variant – thus indicating even greater choice will be provided to shoppers of Big Red.

The data dilemma

Details are still murky at this stage: will any of the four carriers sell the Gear S2 Classic, or only the standard model? Will Verizon be the only one to offer a non-3G enabled model?

The data connectivity issue is, in and of itself, a dilemma as it will inevitably require a separate contract. With the Gear S last year, Samsung included not just mobile data service, but also support for voice calls, making a perfect new contract pitch for carriers to market.

Reports that the Gear S2 will include an eSIM arguably make the situation all the more complicated, as save for the Verizon Gear S last year (which featured an embedded SIM) this will prevent customers from buying the device and using it on other carriers. It will also prevent users who have an existing second line from inserting the SIM into the Gear S2.

The Gear S2 will apparently make use of an embedded eSIM.

There is also the simple matter that Samsung has once again chosen to use 3G network infrastructure whereas rival LG has offered an LTE variant of its Watch Urbane in Korea for some time now.

Pricing and availability

Nothing is yet known as to when the devices will be available for purchase other than a vague “fall” target, or how much they will retail for. Given the technology involved, and based on past pricing, it wouldn’t be unrealistic to assume the Gear S2 (or Gear S2 Classic) will land somewhere in the ballpark of $300-400.

Will the Gear S2 Classic (pictured) make its way to carriers as well?

We expect more information to be provided when IFA begins later this week. Until then, please feel free to leave us your thoughts on the device and its potential: could this be the first smartwatch you purchase or has Samsung limited its appeal by once again opting for Tizen instead of Android Wear? Do these products actually have the potential to reverse the weardown of consumer interest in wearables?

Old Atari games had graphics glitches because of CPU bottlenecks

Now that we know how the graphics worked on the Nintendo Entertainment System and Commodore 64, The iBookGuy wants to tell us all about how the Apple II and Atari 2600 got their groove on. In the latest video he says that the Apple II actually used two different techniques for producing visuals depending on whether you had a monochrome or color monitor unit. And the reason white text on a black background appears almost rainbow-like in nature on color machines has to do with pixel placement. For example, blue and green being next to each other on screen requires perfect alignment lest you want white mages to have spots of the former bleeding into them.

For CPU-driven graphics (rather than those from a dedicated graphics processor) like what was found on classic Atari systems, the left-most portion of the screen had black lines because there wasn’t enough time for the processor to run the game code and draw the screen simultaneously. You can even see it in the GIF up above!

Like this YouTuber’s previous video, the information here is super easy to follow. The iBookGuy says he’ll keep the series going with videos about how classic game music and sound effects worked. Clips focused on VGA graphics could be coming if there’s enough call for it — you can, ahem, color us interested. Sorry.

Google’s custom self-driving car comes to Austin

Google's self-driving car (aka the koala car) in an Austin startup

Google’s cute, koala-faced self-driving car is no longer limited to roaming around Californian streets. The company is bringing “a few” of the prototype autonomous vehicles to Austin, Texas within the next few weeks. They’ll stick to the same northern parts of the city as the modified Lexus SUVs do today, so don’t expect to see one parked outside of Stubb’s BBQ any time soon. Still, this is a rare chance to see Google’s robotic ride outside of its native habitat — so long as you aren’t trying any fancy bike tricks, you’re in for a treat.

Skype v5.11 updated to include heads up notification to call or reply to friends

skype-play-store-logoSimilar to how regular text messages work, Skype has updated their app to give users the ability to call or reply to a text directly from the notification. Unfortunately, unlike a regular text message, you still have to enter the app once you have selected your option.

When someone messages you, a pop up notification will appear at the top of your screen with a call button on the left and reply button on the right. The notification is exactly like all other notifications and will appear over top of any app you are currently in.
