Leaked sketches reveal details of the upcoming OnePlus 2

oneplus-2-sketch-leaked

The OnePlus 1 experienced a huge amount of success in 2014, and the Chinese startup OnePlus will soon be unveiling the successor of their popular device, the OnePlus 2, on July 27th. Business Insider recently acquired a few sketches of the yet-to-be released device, giving us a hint of what might possibly be new on the successor of one-of-the most talked about Android smartphone of 2014. It was previously reported that the OnePlus 2 will feature an all glass and metal design and the sketches seem to confirm this claim. Although the design looks quite similar than the OnePlus 1, the top sketches reveal new features such as a USB Type C connector and an 8-megapixel front facing camera.

In addition to a fingerprint sensor, the bottom sketches reveal a dual camera setup on the back of the device. This might be a similar type of technology as the one used on the HTC One M8, which allows for a second camera to record depth perception data so that the user can change the focus of an object after the picture has been taken.

Although the sketches might not confirm anything, the alleged specs are realistic and seem to make sense. Finally, according to a report form Droid-Life who have spotted the OnePlus 2 in a Bluetooth SIG authority filing, the device will come into three different variants; A2001, A2003, and A2005, that each might slightly vary in specs

Apple Music Tidbits: Nicknames, Playlist Management, and More [iOS Blog]

Apple’s new subscription-based music service launched earlier this week, and even if you’ve taken advantage of Apple’s free three-month trial to see if it is worth your dime and time, there are a few things you may not have discovered yet about its features.

While our Getting Started guide gives an overview of how to get up and running, this article gives more details on some of the things you can do with Apple Music and how to make it work for you. If you’ve noticed any other features we haven’t listed yet, feel free to let us know in the forums.

Add a Nickname to Your Profile

Apple Music NicknameYou could stick with your full Apple ID name, or change it to something that fits you better. Apple lets you add a nickname to your ID, which will be displayed on playlists and comments. Nicknames are unique, so the earlier you grab one, the better.

On iOS:

  1. Open the Music app and tap on any of the main section icons in the bottom toolbar if you’re not already on a main page.
  2. Tap the silhouette profile icon in the upper left corner of the main screen.
  3. Tap your name. Then tap the Edit button to add a nickname.

In iTunes:

  1. Click on the arrow next to your name, and then click on your Apple ID.
  2. Enter a nickname in the fill-in form.

Start a Station Based on a Song or Album

Start a Station Apple Music
You can start a new station based on a song or album in either your music library or Apple Music. Tap the three dots next to the song or album to call up additional options. Then, tap “Start Station” on iOS or “New station from artist or song” on OS X to begin listening to tracks.

22 Massachusetts towns will build their own gigabit internet service

The ends of fiber optic cables

The FCC made it clear that towns should have the freedom to build their own broadband services, and one cooperative group is determined to take advantage of that liberty. WiredWest has gained the support of 22 Massachusetts towns for a municipal broadband effort that will give them all fiber optic service. It won’t be the cheapest option, but it’ll be much faster than the pokey DSL, fixed wireless and satellite data that residents have had to settle for in the past. It’ll start at $49 per month for 25Mbps speeds, with 100Mbps and a lightning-quick 1Gbps respectively available for $79 and $109 per month.

There’s still work to go before this becomes a reality. The burgs have only racked up about $34.5 million of the necessary $79 million in funding, and town councils have to approve the costs. Another 10 towns have yet to formally join. If the effort succeeds, though, it’ll go a long way toward not just improving small-town internet speeds, but legitimizing the very notion of city-run broadband. Telecom giants have spent years trying to outlaw municipal broadband in an attempt to stifle competition, even in areas they have no intention of serving — if successful, this would show that the concept works.

Uber will give you a free ride to jury duty in one US county

An Uber car

Jury duty may be an annoying (if vital) civic responsibility, but one US county is experimenting with a ridesharing offer that could make it a little more bearable. The County Clerk in Macomb, Michigan is partnering with Uber on a 60-day trial that gives jurors a total of $40 in credit for their rides to and from the courthouse. Ideally, this will save you from having to fight bad weather or pay through the nose for parking when you’re trying to serve.

Of course, the big challenge is that this is merely an experiment. Uber is footing the bill during the trial, but what happens when the county has to pay up? If there’s a dozen jurors in each trial, the local government is looking at a minimum $480 per case. That could add up if the the county always makes free ridesharing available, rather than reserving it for special circumstances. However, it could be worthwhile if it sees fewer people skipping jury duty — we’re sure that Uber wishes it could offer this courtroom service in France.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus case leak offers a revealing look

Samsung are getting ready to launch XL versions of their popular Galaxy S6 in the form of the Galaxy Note 5, which will simply be an enlarged version of the device. The Galaxy S6 Edge will reportedly be called the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, but we already knew that.

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-5-S6-Edge-Plus

What’s interesting is the latest leak that shows some CAD images of case renders for the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus (Samsung never have been good with naming their devices).

There’s not too much revolutionary revealed from these renders, only confirming that the devices will most likely simply be enlarged versions of the current Galaxy S6 devices; and why not, they’ve gone down pretty well in the market.

For perspective, the Galaxy Note 5 will reportedly come with a 5.98-inch 4K Quad HD display, Exynos 7422 processor, USB Type-C, and a 4,100mAh battery. The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will measure in with a 5.5-inch screen, Snapdragon 808 processor (which is interesting), and a 16-Megapixel camera.

Launch timeframes are still unknown, but IFA in September seems like a good guess as any for the new devices.

Would you buy the Galaxy Note 5 or the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus if what we know so far came to fruition? Drop us a comment below.

Check out Dolphin’s GameCube/Wii emulator running smoothly on the NVIDIA Shield Android TV

There might be a lengthy list of video game emulators available in the Google Play Store, but not many that can handle titles from more recent consoles like the Nintendo GameCube or Wii. It’s pretty clear that getting more recent games to run well on Android can be quite difficult, but that’s not stopping the development team behind the popular Dolphin Emulator.

Dolphin is an emulator for the PC that runs Nintendo GameCube and Wii titles, which has been around for a few years now. The dev team launched its first build of Dolphin for Android back in 2013, though it never really performed all that well. Although the final version isn’t quite complete yet, the Dolphin team has just shown off one of the latest builds running on the Tegra X1-powered NVIDIA Shield Android TV.

Read and watch: 12 best emulators for Android

The video attached above shows the emulator running a handful of popular Wii titles such as Resident Evil 2, Phantasy Star Online 1 & 2, Ikaruga, Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansion and even Super Smash Bros. Melee. The video shows off some of the best GameCube emulation we’ve seen on Android to date, but it’s clear that the tech is still not quite there yet. Most of the games experience stuttering problems, though it looks quite nice to us. It should be noted that the audio issues in the video weren’t present when the team was playing the game, so keep that in mind when you watch.

The Dolphin team says they needed to drop support for ARMv7 devices to ensure the emulation quality is at its best, but it still seems like the developers are making some great progress. We’ll be sure to update you if we hear anything more from the team behind this emulator.

JXE Streams: An early, eerie look at ‘We Happy Few’

Drugs, check. Dystopia, check. An alternative 1960s English town with a terrifying history, check. We Happy Few ticks a lot of my boxes in its premise alone, plus the art direction seems spot-on and the characters already feel real. Take Uncle Jack for example: He’s a talk-show host with a permanent smile fixed on his painted face, and he says things like, “Of course, none of us had to do anything terrible when the Germans were here. No, no. At least, I can’t remember anything. Can you?” And then he laughs in a way that suggests, yes, everyone in this small English town definitely did something awful. One thing remains unclear about We Happy Few so far: How it plays. We’re going to find out today live on Twitch with a super-early, pre-alpha build of the game. Even though Compulsion still has to add more AI behaviors, world-building elements, combat mechanics and other features, they’ve given us the go-ahead to show off the early world of Wellington Wells. Join us at 3:30PM ET / 12:30PM PT right here, on the Engadget Gaming homepage or at Twitch.tv/Joystiq.

Leak hints the next iPhone might record 4K video

An iPhone 6

Tired of recording ‘just’ 1080p video on your iPhone while your friends produce clips in glorious 4K? You won’t have to look on with envy for much longer, if the latest rumors are on the mark. A tipster on China’s Sina Weibo has posted what appear to be leaked details of the next iPhone’s rear camera, and it’ll reportedly jump to 12 megapixels with 4K video recording. There’s no guarantee that this is in the cards, but it jives with earlier claims that Apple’s future handset will focus on camera upgrades. You’re not likely to see design changes, if 9to5Mac‘s photos are accurate, so photographic improvements like this will likely be more important this time around.

Of course, the real question is whether or not 4K capture will matter much in practice. There are many more 4K TVs these days, as well as a 5K iMac, but they’re all pretty expensive — it’s still hard to find a place to play those Ultra HD videos in full detail. The gobs of storage necessary for 4K also limit how much you can record at a time. With that said, there are signs that Apple is working on a relatively cheap 4K iMac and otherwise pushing for higher-res content. If the iPhone is jumping to 4K movie-making, this year seems like a prime opportunity.
