Is this Blackberry’s first Android smartphone?

Blackberry's first Android smartphone leak

Evan Blass or “Evleaks” came out on Twitter today to announce Blackberry’s new phone the “Venice”. He also said it was heading to AT&T soon. He later posted the picture you see above which looks to be a Blackberry Passport, but has a Android keyboard. The entire image is not clear as to exactly what the phone will look like, but one thing that is strange is it features a physical keyboard and an onscreen keyboard.

We have been hearing a lot of talk lately that Blackberry will be coming out with an Android powered smartphone, but it was only just talk. This may be the first actual leak of what is probably a test device. Possibly using an existing Blackberry Passport to test out the spacing etc of the Android operating system on it’s peculiar square screen?

This might be Blackberry’s first Android phone

Rumors of a fully Android-powered Blackberry device popped up again last month, and today Evan Blass aka evleaks has posted a picture showing a glimpse of the phone. Specs for the alleged “Venice” popped up on N4BB a couple of weeks ago, calling it a slider with a 5.4-inch screen, 18MP rear camera and 1.8GHz Hexa-core CPU. According to Blass, the Venice will run Android, and is coming to AT&T first.

Fallout Shelter for Android is coming out in August

When Fallout Shelter was released on iOS only at E3 2015, the Android gaming community gave a collective sigh – while a version for Android was promised, it was yet another case of platform favouritism that is by now way beyond wearing thin. Still, we’d prefer to get the game at least, which has had a barnstorming run on the Apple App Store, and it appears it could be sooner than we expected with Bethesda PR guru, Pete Hines, saying that Fallout Shelter for Android is coming out in August, or thereabouts:

There does seem to be a little bit of tendency in Hines’ statement, but we’ll probably find out sooner rather than later if this is the actual window when the game is going to be released. If you haven’t heard, Fallout Shelter is set in the Fallout universe, putting you in charge of a vault during the nuclear apocalypse. You’ll have to manage and improve your vault in order to keep your community alive and healthy and adopts the cartoon appearance of all the ads that featured in Bethesda’s Fallout promo art.

What do you think about Fallout Shelter’s tentative release date on Android? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Fallout Shelter likely launching for Android in August

fallout-shelter

Fallout Shelter was announced only a couple weeks ago. It seemed to be a very fun and entertaining game, but us Android fans were a bit upset about the fact that it was an iOS-only release at launch. What about Android? We had nothing but the promise of a release to come “soon”. Today we are finally getting a release window straight from Bethesda.

A fan took it to Twitter to politely ask a Bethesda employee about the release of Follout Shelter on Android. Bethesda’s own Pete Hines then answered that progress was going well, and though there was no release date announced, he expected the game to “be out next month” – so August.

It’s not really an official statement yet, but it’s as close as we can get to it. The information comes straight from the dog’s mouth, making it nearly as credible as an announcement. We still have some time to wait before Fallout Shelter reaches our favorite mobile OS, so you may want to get yourself another cool game to play in the meantime. Either that or go ahead and download it for iOS if you have access to one of Apple’s devices. It’s pretty much what I’ve been forced to do!

I must admit I’ve been playing this game for quite some time and I am in love with it. I have spent countless hours building my shelter up to many underground levels. I have so many residents I can no longer remember which is which, except for a few very leveled up ones. All I do is look at their stats and put them in a room where they will be most productive for the vault’s well-being!

Who else is playing this game? Do you love it as much as I do? Are you waiting for it to hit Android? Hit the comments to share your thoughts!

MasterCard is testing a new way for you to pay with your face

MasterCard Mobile World Congress

MasterCard announced on Thursday that it’s looking to add a layer of biometric security to its credit cards and all user will need to do is simply take a selfie. The system will create a digitized map of your face, convert that map into a hash and compare it to the hash stored on Mastercard’s servers. Users will be able to pay through a mobile app with either their fingerprints or by staring into the device and blinking once. The blink is used to prevent someone from just holding up a picture of you to spoof the system. What’s more, “They’re storing an algorithm, not a picture of you,” Phillip Dunkelberger, who runs Nok Nok Labs, told CNN Money. “And I’m sure they’re doing the appropriate stuff to guard it.”

The company reportedly already has deals in place with Google, Apple, Blackberry and Microsoft, with hopes to begin a limited 500-person pilot program later this fall. Once they work out all the kinks with the new system, it could be available to the public as early as next year.

Watch Russia launch crucial Space Station cargo at 12:55AM ET

Russia's Progress 60 rocket on the launchpad

The International Space Station has had a tough time getting supplies lately between two rocket explosions and an orbital failure, but it’s going to get an important lifeline in the near future… hopefully. Russia is about to launch Progress 60, a cargo ship that will ferry over 3 tons of much-needed food, fuel and other equipment to the ISS. You won’t have to wait until its expected Sunday arrival to find out how it fares, though. NASA is streaming the launch at 12:55AM ET — tune in below and you’ll have a sense of whether or not Progress 60 fares any better than its ill-fated predecessor.

Android-powered BlackBerry Venice reportedly headed to AT&T

BlackBerry Z10 review

Reports have been surfacing for some time about a rumored Android-powered handset made by BlackBerry, and those rumors began to really pick up steam just a few weeks ago. This mystery handset will supposedly come with a slide-out keyboard and will be launched sometime this fall, though not many other details have been revealed quite yet. With that said, we might have just received a few more tidbits of information, courtesy of retired leaker, @evleaks.

According to the tweet sent out earlier today, BlackBerry Venice will be the name of the smartphone, and it will, in fact, feature a slide-out keyboard. Not only that, but apparently the device is also headed to AT&T. We’re not sure if this means the device will be an AT&T-exclusive or not, just that the carrier is planning to sell the device.

While BlackBerry still has yet to confirm the existence of the Android device, John Chen, the company’s CEO, explained in an interview that the company is not opposed to building an Android device, as long as it’s secure.

It’s certainly been a long time since we’ve seen a notable Android handset come with a full QWERTY keyboard, so we wouldn’t be surprised if BlackBerry’s new slider becomes a hit among smartphone users, if and when it launches. For now, all of these are just rumors, so we’ll need to wait until we hear more from the company to know anything for sure.

What do you think? Would you be interested in an Android-powered slider built by BlackBerry? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

How to manually create a Story in Google Photos – Android customization

Google Photos Story Portland

While Google Maps has proven to be the best real-time traffic tracking navigation tool on my Android device, last week’s Android customization using Zooper Widget has been a priceless addition to the experience. I hope it has helped you speed up your usage of Maps as well.

If you are like me, you’ve been getting in some travel this summer. While on the road, many of us go a little snap happy with our cameras, and then have dozens, hundreds or more images to sort through when we get home. While I am leaving you to sort your own photos for today, I would like to show you how to force Google Photos to create one of those cool Stories that sometimes pop up on their own.

Before we begin

Get it on Google Play ButtonTo follow along today you will require a current gen Android device with the new Google Photos app installed. Google Photos is free in the Google Play Store, as is the storage space you’ll need to store the photos that you wish to work with. Go ahead and get the photos uploaded, either through your Android device or by using the Windows uploader.

Manually create a Google Photos Story

As mentioned, Google Photos is pretty clever, and often pumps out a Story from your uploaded photos from a trip. However, you may have taken a photo or two that just don’t belong in the Story, or you have another set of photos altogether that you would like to turn into these shareable short clips. This is where the new Google Photos app on Android comes in handy.

Google Photos Story Vancouver

Now, we’ve discussed before that Google Photos can create several nifty types of photo and video presentations through the new Assistant section of the app. Albums, Movies, Stories, Animations and Collages are all ready to be created either automatically through what was once called Autoawesome, or you can now make them happen on command. Let’s build a Story.

Head into the Google Photos app, it will just be called Photos in your app drawer.

Start by heading into the left hand menu and choosing Assistant.

Once in Assistant, you can view all of the auto generated items, be sure to save the ones that you like, and, who knows, it may have already created the Story you were hoping for.

Google Photos create Story

If your desired Story does not exist, head into almost any section of the app and tap the “+” button in the top right corner.

In the list of items that you can create, tap Story.

You will now need to select photos and videos, run through your list and grab all that you want included in this Story.

When ready, tap the Create button in the top right.

That is really all there is to it. If the photos relate and are geo-tagged, Google Photos is smart enough to attach a title and fill in a few other blanks for you. Run through the Story to add some descriptions and fine tune image placement, then go ahead and share with the world.

What’s next

You may not know this, but you just went through the exact same basic steps required to create any of the fancy image tools in the new Google Photos. Each has their own settings and abilities on the other end, but simply tap new and select your photos to get started, Google Photos will do all the heavy lifting.

Google Photos Create New

Next Week

I hope this little Android customization project helps you get some awesome image and video presentations out of Google Photos this summer. Next week we want to get back to manipulating how Android actually operates on your device, we’ll take a quick look at Google Now, or at least at the swipe up gesture and what you might like to use it for instead.

Do you use Google Photos as your image storage solution?

Chicago kicks in ‘cloud tax’ on streaming services like Netflix

Chicago

Citizens of Chicago need to prepare themselves for a “cloud tax” that went into effect on July 1. The nine-percent tax to cloud services like Netflix, Spotify and Xbox Live is the result of an “amusement tax” ruling that items “delivered electronically” for entertainment purposes are subject to a tax that has traditionally been levied against the sale of concert tickets, sporting events and the like. The ruling does not affect the sales of movies, songs and games delivered electronically. So purchases from the iTunes store and Steam are not taxed. But, a subscription to Apple Music or Spotify is subject to taxation. If your streaming entertainment service of choice hasn’t already started charging, you may have a few months before your bill goes up. The ruling gives companies until September 1, 2015 to comply.

Bing Pong is a wonderful, terrible distraction from your searches

A Pong cabinet at Supercade

We hope you aren’t curious about Nolan Bushnell’s game development history… you may find yourself sucked into a time sink. Microsoft has quietly added an option to play Pong in Bing (Bing Pong, get it?) if you search for the digital table tennis classic in your browser. It’s not a novel concept, and it certainly isn’t the most advanced — Google’s Cube Slam experiment is on another level. It’s surprisingly addictive, however, and might offer just the right amount of ’70s gaming nostalgia to tide you over when you’re stuck at work.
