Sony Xperia Z3 back in T-Mobile shelves again
The Sony Xperia Z3 went surprisingly missing from T-Mobile’s online store recently. We figured that the smartphone was gone for good. But it’s clearly not the case as the 2014 Sony flagship has now made a comeback on the carrier’s site.
The Xperia Z3 on T-Mobile is also more affordable now with the price now standing at $499.99, down from $630. So it seems like T-Mobile and Sony are making a conscious effort to ensure that the smartphone does well in the U.S. market. The Xperia Z3 is also available through Verizon Wireless under the Xperia Z3v moniker.
The smartphone comes with a 5.2 inch 1080p display, a 20.7-megapixel camera on the back, a 2.2-megapixel front camera, a quad core 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage (expandable up to 128GB), Android 5.0 Lollipop and a 3,100 mAh battery.

Google believes its efforts to increase encryption have worked in their favor
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt who was speaking at the annual BoxDev event, mentioned that the company’s efforts in improving encryption of its products have worked greatly since the Snowden leaks.
Ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden made several allegations about the federal government illegally surveilling its citizens. This came as a shock to the tech companies, including Google, who have since amped up their encryption to ensure that their data isn’t accessed.
Schmidt believes that government agencies shouldn’t have access to user data without a prior warrant. He also says that encryption of its products will also help in overcoming censorship imposed for its products by countries like China.
Having products encrypted makes it near impossible for federal agencies to access data. However, if the government sees the need to get information about something, they can do so by taking proper legal actions. It’s good to see that a major company like Google is taking a stand against surveillance, which could provide inspiration to other companies as well.

Videos Showcase Apple Watch Launch Lines, Teardown and More
Today is Apple Watch launch day in the United States and eight other first wave launch countries, and many customers around the world are busy setting up their new smartwatch or anxiously waiting for their package to be delivered. Meanwhile, the teardown team at repair website iFixit flew to Melbourne, Australia to get their hands on the Apple Watch and take it apart to see what’s inside.

iFixit started by prying open the display and disconnecting the display and digitizer cables underneath, getting a first look at the Taptic Engine, inside of the Digital Crown and internal 205 mAh battery. Digging further into the Apple Watch, the team got a closer look at various components for haptic feedback, an ambient light sensor and S1 integrated processor. Overall, the Apple Watch received a 5 out of 10 repairability score.
Back in Los Angeles, several thousands of miles away from the teardown, KTLA reporter Rich DeMuro was on site at Maxfield in West Hollywood to interview various people waiting in line to purchase the Apple Watch. It was confirmed earlier this week that the Apple Watch would go on sale in limited quantities at Maxfield and other select fashion boutiques such as Colette in Paris and Dover Street Market in Tokyo and London.
DeMuro also provided a basic overview of the Apple Watch’s core features, including watch faces, heart rate monitoring, health and fitness tracking, phone calling and stock apps. In line with many early reviews, he said that the Apple Watch is not a device that everyone needs, but that the wrist-worn device has high-quality apps and provides a better overall experience than many Android Wear alternatives.
Apple Watch launched today in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and United Kingdom following a two-week pre-order window that started April 10 at 12:01 AM Pacific. The watch will be sold exclusively online until at least June, with no walk-in purchases being taken at Apple retail stores in any of the first wave launch countries.

Sony Xperia Z3 re-added to T-Mobile’s lineup with a price reduction

It wasn’t too long ago that we saw T-Mobile remove Sony’s Xperia Z3 from its lineup, no longer offering the device through its online store. Even a T-Mobile representative confirmed the removal through Twitter, stating that the Z3 will no longer be offered by the carrier. It looks like the representative gave us some false information, because in a recent development, T-Mobile has, for some reason, re-added the Z3 to its online store with a pretty nice discount.

When the phone was available through T-Mo previously, it would run you a hefty $630 without a contract. Now if you’d like to get your hands on the device, it will only run you $499.92 off-contract, or $20.83 per month over a 24-month span. This price drop likely has a lot to do with Sony’s recent announcement of the Xperia Z4 – an iterative take on last year’s flagship.

Apple Watch app roundup: It’s all on the wrist
It’s Apple Watch day. And whether you received one already, or are stuck waiting a few weeks for it, you’ll want apps to make the most out of your new wearable when the time comes. Thankfully, we here at Engadget are always thinking about you, the reader, so we’ve put together a list of third-party apps that stand out from the 3,000-plus expected to be available at launch. But first, let’s talk about some essentials. The Twitter and Instagram Apple Watch apps, for starters, will let you check out tweets and view photos right on your wrist, among other things. Sports fans, meanwhile, have access to apps like ESPN, MLB At Bat and NBA Game Time, which makes it easy to keep up with scores without having to pull out your iPhone.
The Apple Watch is going to play a big role for fitness buffs too, and there are a number of apps to choose from in that department: Misfit, Nike+ Running, Runtastic and RunKeeper, to mention a few. Travel often? Don’t worry: Delta and American Airlines, two of the most popular airlines, both have apps. Of course, you may also want to kill time every now and then; for those cases, there are games such as Rules!, a tiny puzzle designed to give your brain a workout, and Pantagu, a novel, fast-paced take on the classic Tic-Tac-Toe. Oh, and then there’s the Chipotle app. Because burritos.
We’ll be updating the list below as more companies and services make their iOS apps friendly with the Apple Watch, so make sure to bookmark this page for future use.

Jack White’s Third Man Records now has its own synth and amp
Jack White has been know to go all out for Record Store Day events with his Third Man Records imprint. This year, in addition to transferring Elvis’ first recording from acetate to vinyl for release last weekend, White and his label revealed a synthesizer/amplifier combo that offers some stellar retro aesthetics. The pair, which includes the Septavox synth and Terz amp, was designed and built by Brooklyn instrument company Critter & Guitari. If the synthesizer looks familiar, the same outfit also makes a more compact Pocket Piano instrument. For the Third Man version, though, a metal enclosure houses 41 maple keys alongside seven modes and seven tones. That adds up to 49 different sounds, combining electric organ, vibrato and more. There are controls for tweaking parameters, tuning and volume alongside MIDI input/output, too.
When it comes to the Terz, there’s an all-metal shell to match the synth, with a “hybrid of classic analog amplification circuitry and cutting edge power electronics” cranking out 15W inside. Three knobs handle distortion and volume settings with a 1/4-inch input and gain control on board as well. Looking to nab the set? The Septavox is priced at $395 and tacking on the Terz is an additional $250.

Selfie typewriter hammers out ASCII portraits
Dimitry Morozov, better known as vtol, is a Russian musician, engineer and artist who decided that selfies were far too modern for his liking. Instead, he wanted people to wait for their gratification, and so hooked up an iSight camera to an Arduino-controlled Brother sx-4000 typewriter. Once a person sticks their face in front of the machine, named i/o, the typewriter painstakingly hammers out a portrait in ASCII art. The hardware was shown off at the 101 festival in Smolny, St. Petersburg in Russia, which ended earlier this month – but you can still see the device in action if you watch the video.

Cricket Wireless introduces unlimited calling and messaging to Canada for $50
2015 has already been a great year for cellular competition. We have seen T-Mobile, Sprint and even Google get into pricing wars to steal customers away from the competition. Today Cricket Wireless announced they have added unlimited calling and texting to our friends across the border in Canada. Any monthly plan that costs $50 per month will get this feature added automatically. In February, Cricket added a similar feature to this one, yet instead of Canada it was unlimited texting and calling to Mexico. The three largest countries in North America are now all accessible without additional fees through these new features, and with many immigrants who miss family and friends, Cricket offers a way to stay in touch without additional fees.
