CBS All Access launches on Roku with live streaming and VOD

CBS All Access streaming service is now available for Roku for $5.99 a month. Roku owners can download the app via the Roku Channel Store and sign up here. In addition to streaming new shows like NCIS, The Big Bang Theory and The Good Wife, the service has an extensive back catalog of classic CBS shows like Star Trek, Cheers, Jag and Engadget favorite, Touched by an Angel. Live streaming of CBS affiliates is available in 14 markets including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia with more on the way. If you’re not in one of those metropolitan areas, you’ll get access to new episodes the day after broadcast. That’s a bummer, but CBS says subscribers will have access to additional content during the Grammys, Country Music Awards and Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. All Access is already available for iOS and Android. But, with today’s Roku news, you won’t have to MacGyver a casting solution to watch MacGyver on your HDTV.

OnePlus reflects on 476 days of existence, looks to the future

oneplus_bamboo_styleswap

Today, April 8, marks the four hundred seventy-sixth day of OnePlus’ existence. The company decided to issue a statement regarding its past, present, and future to acknowledge the milestone. Its forums have reached ten million posts and the company appreciates fans staying with the company through tough times. Despite its setbacks and speedbumps, OnePlus proclaims it has yet to reach “1% of our potential.” OnePlus generally apologizes for such matters in its statements and this one is no different. The company has committed to its initial approach of communicating efficiently.

The following is where OnePlus enters apology territory, promising continued transparency and change:

Over the course of time, we’ve forgotten to remain true to some of our initial ideals. For one, we haven’t been communicating as much as we could. Sure, we’ve been extremely busy, and there are a number of excuses that can be given for any situation. But what is OK to compromise on, and what isn’t? If we only follow best practices and default to safe, what’s stopping us from fading into obscurity like everyone else?

Increasingly, I see people in our industry trying to figure out what OnePlus is all about, and there are many interpretations and theories. The truth is, we’re also figuring things out. What we do know is that we’re on to a good start, and if handled properly, we have the opportunity make significant positive impact to the world. But how? Some of us have literally poured our hearts into this. We’ve made sacrifices on pivotal things like relationships with family and friends. Not to mention time, which in the end, is the only currency any of us really possesses. Our sacrifices are not made to create something mediocre. Spectacular needs to happen.

The reason I’m writing this is to touch base with you, our community. Many things have happened, and many things are happening. I want to keep you guys in the loop by communicating more often. And maybe, along the way, you could help us discover what OnePlus is about.

Rumored iPad Mini 4 Rear Shell With iPad Air 2 Design Elements Shown Off in New Video

When Apple launched the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3 in late 2014, many people were disappointed with the iPad mini update, which essentially just added Touch ID to the existing iPad mini 2 with no other external design changes. Since then, there have been a few rumors suggesting Apple is working on an iPad mini 4 update that includes iPad Air 2 design elements like a thinner body.

French site Nowhereelse.fr [Google Translate] today shared a video and some images of what’s said to be an early version of the rear casing for the upcoming iPad mini 4.

The aluminum shell closely resembles the shell of the existing iPad mini, but it does include several design elements introduced with the iPad Air 2. There’s a single row of larger speaker holes alongside the Lightning port at the bottom of the device, rather than two smaller rows, and the mute switch on the device has been removed and replaced with a microphone hole.

Rumors have suggested the iPad mini 4 will be thinner than the iPad mini 2 and the iPad mini 3, giving it a thickness more akin to the iPad Air 2, but it is difficult to determine the device’s possible thickness based on the images that were shared. Along with an iPad Air-style design, an updated iPad mini 4 would likely adopt one of Apple’s more recent processors, possibly the A8X in the iPad Air 2 or an A9 processor coming later this year.

ipadminirearshell2
There’s been little word on when an updated iPad mini might launch, but given Apple’s historical fall release schedule for iPads, it’s unlikely we will see the iPad mini 4 until the later months of 2015.

Google served with complaint regarding deceptive ads on YouTube Kids

youtube_kids_app_icon

Various advocacy groups are coming together in an effort to get the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the possibility of deceptive advertisements being placed on YouTube Kids. The complaint submitted to the FTC points out that Google has neglected to define a difference between advertisements and user-generated content from the service itself. Also, spacing between videos and advertisements is nonexistent.

Viewers, especially children, are not able to understand whether select content has been user-generated or professionally produced. Even when products are being endorsed on YouTube Kids, there may be a lack of disclosure of the relationships with product manufacturers. This area of concern is most noticeable with unboxing videos. Were the products purchased or provided by the manufacturer? If it is the latter, the content producer should note the relationship.

The issue of continuous streaming does not allow for a separation of videos and advertisements. Television is slightly different in that there are bumpers to separate the two. Even worse is that entire channels can go unnoticed as promotional. Viewers can go minutes before seeing actual content and not an advertisement.

The following is YouTube’s statement:

“When developing YouTube Kids we consulted with numerous partners and child advocacy and privacy groups. We are always open to feedback on ways to improve the app.”

Microsoft and Getty Images have formed a new partnership that will allow Microsoft to use the catalog of photos from Getty in its products and services such as Bing and Cortana. The multi-year agreement is a nice conclusion to an image copyright issue that caused Getty to file a lawsuit against Microsoft in September 2014.
