Volkswagen’s latest ‘Gran Turismo’ concept is a 500-horsepower hatchback

Volkswagen GTI Supersport

For those who think Volkswagen’s Golf GTI and Golf R hot hatches just aren’t “hot” enough, the carmaker’s latest virtual concept for Gran Turismo 6 (PlayStation 3) may be up your alley. The GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo offers up more than 500 horsepower in a hunkered-down, all-wheel-drive, two-door hatch that’s slightly faster than its real-world inspiration. In fact, the carmaker says this virtual concept can hit 62MPH (100KPH) in about 3.6 seconds.

Of course, Volkswagen isn’t the only company showing off concept cars on GT6‘s digital tracks. We’ve also seen futuristic rides from the likes of Renault and Nissan. And VW itself released an earlier concept, called the GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo. This latest virtual offering, on the other hand, more closely resembles the hot hatch it’s based on. But whereas the real-world GTI makes do with 210HP (220 if you opt for the Performance Pack), this in-game concept boasts 503HP and 490 pound-feet of torque. All told, Volkswagen says that’s enough to propel the digital ride on to a top speed of 186MPH (300KPH).

So if the real world’s upcoming 395HP Golf R400 just isn’t enough for you, you can grab an even faster (albeit digital-only) Golf via Gran Turismo 6‘s latest update (version 1.18). Once you’ve updated the game, the car should be up for grabs in the Vision GT area of the Cars section. Alternatively, VW says you can currently also earn the car by completing a lap in the Seasonal Event mode.

This is how much the Galaxy S6 edge costs to make

It ain’t the cheapest phone to make out there.

According to an unreleased report, the 64 gigabyte version of the Galaxy S6 edge, specifically the Verizon model, costs about $290 to build and assemble. This is $34 higher per unit than the Galaxy S5 last year.

“Samsung is clearly studying Apple’s playbook by using things like metal enclosures and other design choices that are similar to Apple’s,” stated Andrew Rassweiler, analyst for IHS teardown research efforts. “The bottom line is that this phone costs less than the iPhone to buy, but it costs Samsung more to build.”

The curved screen on the edge smartphone is the most expensive factor when building it. The combination of the display and screen elements is $85 per unit by itself. The second mist expensive part of the phone is Samsung’s Exynos processor at $29.50 per unit, mainly because of the advanced use of 14-nanometer technology, which the only other company on the market with this type of chip is Intel. The 3GB DDR4 memory added in to the phone adds $27 per unit, which is the first time DDR4 has been used in a smartphone. Samsung’s own 64GB ROM storage costs $25, which is a huge profit grab for the company seeing how they add $100 for every storage option upgrade when retailing.

The Galaxy S6 edge unlocked costs $849 for 32GB, $949 for 64GB and $990 for 128GB.

Letv announces Le Superphone, Le latest smartphone to come from China.

o-LETV-570

Letv, which only a few days ago was an unheard of Chinese company, has today presented itself to the world by announcing Le Superphone, a premium looking device with the specs to match. Unfortunately though, chatter has shifted more to the social gaffe they performed when they compared Apple to Hitler in their teaser video that they used to promote Le Superphone. They have since apologized for the mistake, but will be a while before they can be known as something other than “that company that compares US companies to former leaders of tyrannical dictatorships.”

Thankfully for them though, Le Superphone seems like a great device what will definitely shift focus from their gaffe to the products that they have to offer. Le Superphone comes with a Snapdragon 810 processor, a high resolution display (Which they have yet to state how big it will be), a 21 MP rear camera and will be one of the first devices to use a reversible USB type-C port for charging.

Letv is eager to prove that they are capable of creating a great smartphone and not just making public gaffes

Le Superphone also comes with the distinct ability to be able to add a filter to the entire operating system. While we don’t necessarily see why that would be a needed feature, perhaps you may see it differently (Maybe if you are a huge fan of Instagram and you always wished that you could add a filter to more than just your photos.) The design looks remarkably similar to the HTC One series of smartphones, with the rounded corners, metal shell, and the camera placed in almost the exact same location. Whether this was done on purpose or by a very strange coincidence (Most likely on purpose), we will have to see. For more information regarding the Le Superphone, make sure to follow the link below.

Texting and driving: the truth

style=”display:block”

data-ad-format=”auto”>

texting_driving

When I was 18, and had been driving for less than a year, my grandma was at my house along with the rest of my dad’s family. She was a joy in our life, and we often teased her for her random comments and stories that typically didn’t make sense or relate to the conversation (this was an ongoing thing with her, unrelated to age, and she knew we did it in love).

That night, a topic about smartphones came up and became our discussion. Suddenly, my grandma blurted out “I saw on the news today someone got in a terrible accident because one of the drivers was Facebooking while driving!” We weren’t exactly sure what to do with the information, other than after a few quiet moments someone teased her about her random comments.

When everyone turned back to the discussion, my grandma grabbed my arm and said to me “If you ever do the Facebook or texting thing while you are driving, you will be in big trouble!” I smiled and accepted the word of advice, but didn’t think much of it as I didn’t consider that to be a problem I had.

Less than a year later, my grandma died due to cancer. That statement was one of the last things she said to just me. Now, I think about that statement whenever I get in the car.

As smartphones become a larger part of our society, more people take them for granted in any situation. Whether it be at the dinner table, in the movie theater, or in the car. While most of these situations present only a danger to social interaction, its using a smartphone while driving that presents a real danger.

Now I can sit here and give you statistics, or tell you that texting while driving is more dangerous than drunk driving, or that the minimum amount of time it takes for you to check that text message is equivalent to driving the length of a football field if driving at 55 MPH. But you’ve heard all of that (if you haven’t, just go here). The question that comes to my mind is, what haven’t you heard?

What I think most people haven’t heard is the truth. And I don’t mean statistics. I mean, what happens when you are texting and driving, and what would happen if it resulted in an accident, possibly fatal.

One of the things that people who text and drive say (or think) is “I know whats going on around me”. I don’t need to do research to say that’s not true. When you’re texting and driving, you are going too slow on the freeway. Or you’re not staying in your lane. More importantly, you’re not seeing the cars around you in order to drive defensively.

If you do this, think truthfully for a second: can you recall the brand and color of the cars that have driven around you while texting? Let me answer that for you: no.

Can you say for certain that you know how fast you were going while you were texting? I’ll answer that for you as well: no.

If you’ve been honked at while texting and driving, can you honestly tell me why you were honked at? I think you know what I’m getting at.

The truth is, only you know the truth. You KNOW that if you were to take a look at yourself, you cannot honestly admit that you are 100% aware of the road in front of AND around you.

For the record, this can go further than smartphones. Bluetooth headsets, smartwatches, car dashboards, and more. Just because you have both hands on the wheel doesn’t mean you are aware of the road.

If you’re sitting there shaking your head at me, then me dig in further: if you did get into an accident because you were texting while driving, what sort of affects would that have on your life? At minimum, you’re looking at spending money on fixing your car, which is significantly more than the money it cost to send that text. At maximum, you’re dead. Are your loved ones prepared for that? Are YOU prepared for that? I’ll go ahead and answer that for you as well: no.

The next time you’re in the car reaching for your phone to respond to your friend’s text asking if you’re on the way, think truthfully: would they rather not get an answer from you and see you when you get there, or would they rather get an answer from you and not see you, ever?

It seems that is was only today (it was) that we told you guys about the possible release date for the Sony Xperia Z4, but here we are with some more news concerning Sony, this time about the Sony Xperia Z4’s successor, the Sony Xperia Z5.

AndroidOrigin is reporting that they have inside information from, a source close to the giant electronics company, regarding the Sony Xperia Z5 specs and the possible announcement date. According to them, Sony is planning on announcing the Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and the Z5 Ultra during the fourth quarter of the fiscal year (most likely in September). Hardware details on the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact are still scarce, but we do have some information regarding the Xperia Z5, and Z5 Ultra.

The Sony Xperia Z5 already sounds like a much better device than the Sony Xperia Z4

According to their source, the Sony Xperia Z5 Ultra will sport a Quad HD display, a whopping 4 GB of ram, and new camera sensors. The Sony Xperia Z5 Ultra will also have Qualcomms latest Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology, which would make it one of the first devices to utilize the new tech since Qualcomm announced it.

The Sony Xperia Z5 will also have the same stats as the Ultra version, minus the fingerprint scanner. They have to differentiate them somewhere, right?

Both devices are also slated to be steering away from Sonys Omni-Balance design language, as all three devices are going to have a completely new look. We personally are huge fans of Sony’s current design schemes, but we are excited to see the new look nonetheless.

Rumor: AT&T will end two-year contracts at the end of May

AT&T logo [aa] (3) Todd Kravos

For years, carriers in the United States have functioned under the same business model – offer consumers a subsidized smartphone when they sign up for a two-year contract. In fact, ever since mobile handsets have been around, this model has gone largely unchanged. T-Mobile announced a few years ago that the company was getting rid of the two-year contract standard, and it’s definitely shaken up the wireless industry ever since. Up until now T-Mobile has been the only major carrier to axe two-year contracts and exclusively offer mobile payment plans, but according to sources familiar with the matter, that may change sometime soon.

AT&T, the second largest carrier in the U.S., will end two-year contracts at the end of May, our sources tell us. AT&T is using this new business model under the codename “Project Alice”, and when the end of May rolls around, only the carrier’s Next program will be available to consumers.

Though we have confidence in this information, there’s always a chance that unforeseen issues will change the plan, so be sure not to treat this rumor as official.

As of right now, credit checks are run for any current customer who wants to switch from the standard two-year contract to the Next program. If the customer’s credit check gets declined, they’re reverted back to a two-year contract. So given that signing up for Next is somewhat difficult for consumers already, we still have no details as to how credit checks will be altered when Project Alice comes into fruition.

Our sources also tell us that AT&T still has no plans to offer unlimited data packages to its customers.

Since T-Mobile stopped offering two-year contracts, multiple other carriers have introduced alternatives to help get more consumers on board. First, T-Mobile unveiled the JUMP! program, allowing folks to upgrade their devices early as long as they pay a few extra dollars monthly for a certain amount of time. Since then, Verizon has introduced it’s Edge program and even Sprint has begun offering more leasing options. Most of these early upgrade programs generally offer up the same benefits, and apparently AT&T has confidence that the Next program will bring the company as much profit as two-year contracts.

Recently, T-Mobile’s John Legere unofficially announced that the Un-carrier has surpassed Sprint in terms of overall customers, making them the third largest carrier in the United States. While there’s still a huge gap between AT&T and T-Mobile, it’s interesting to see AT&T adopting a similar business model to one of it’s competitors.

We’ll be sure to update you when we hear more about AT&T’s Project Alice. If this new plan turns out to be similar in pricing and benefits to T-Mobile’s no-contract offerings, would you be interested? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Microsoft slashes patent licensing fees for OEMs that pre-install its apps and services

microsoft logo

Despite having its own mobile operating system to foster, Microsoft cares very much about other platforms. The company invests heavily in supporting users of Android and iOS devices in addition to Windows. Late last month, Microosft had signed deals with eleven hardware manufacturers to pre-install select apps and services. The deals put Office, OneDrive, and Skype onto a multitude of Android devices that are available now and on the way. For example, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge feature the aforementioned Microsoft software products.

So what is it that these companies get in return for having Microsoft apps and services pre-installed? Discounted patent licensing fees. Companies such as Samsung and Dell have access to Microsoft’s patent portfolio at a discounted price. It costs them less to implement the patents into their products and all that is required is bundling a few items. The decision to slash patent licensing fees has reportedly helped Microsoft as hardware manufacturers are always seeking to expand gross margins.
