Here are our impressions of the BLU Win HD with Dual SIM LTE

The BLU Win HD Windows Phone with Dual SIM LTE may be the best contract bargain yet

Back in 2014, BLU became one of a handful of new white-label manufacturers to add their services to the Windows Phone ecosystem. Offering low cost but eye-catching phones to consumers, companies like BLU brought something other than Lumias to those in the US. Perhaps more importantly, they finally offered a vision of unlocked, carrier free devices, giving consumers the ultimate choice.

Second Chance – a collection of mini-games for your Windows Phone that may drive you nuts

Second Chance is a Windows Phone game that is a collection of mini-games that you play in five second spurts. The games will test your reaction speed, concentration and powers of deduction. The primary goal of Second Chance is to survive for as long as possible by solving the five second puzzles. Should you fail to solve a puzzle, it will cost you one of your five gaming lives.

The Windows Phone game, available for low-memory devices, has been available in the Store for some time now. We stumbled across Second Chance over the weekend while searching for another gaming title. Second Chance looked fun and we took the free version out for a test drive to see if the game was deserving of the 4.5 Star rating it was pulling down in the Store.

Apple releases new beta of iCloud for Windows

Apple has released a new beta version of iCloud for Windows to AppleSeed testers.

First launched in September 2014, iCloud for Windows enables users to get their iCloud Drive content on their Windows desktop. Users also have access to their iCloud Photo Stream and Photo Sharing.

For those that haven’t used iCloud for Windows before, this can all be found in a new folder created under Favorites. You’ll also need to be running at least iOS 8, or if you have a Mac in addition to a Windows PC, OS X Yosemite, in order to take advantage of iCloud Drive at all.

The new beta build, numbered 410A44, can be downloaded by AppleSeed testers. If you want to use the public version of iCloud for Windows, you can download that here.

How to exclude files from Time Machine backups

Sometimes you don’t want Time Machine to back up your files. Here’s how to keep that from happening.

Time Machinee, Apple’s built-in backup utility, is actually pretty smart about figuring out what to save and what to skip on your Mac. OS X by default excludes a whole bunch of stuff from Time Machine that Apple engineers know the Mac just doesn’t need in order to work right after restoring from a backup. There are times, however, when you might want to make it a bit smarter. It could be big but temporary files that would just eat up space, or private files you don’t want duplicated anywhere, even for back up. Either way, with a few simple tweaks, you can more storage capacity out of your Time Machine backup disk and spend less time backing up, too.

If your curiosity has the better of you, you can open up Apple’s standard exclusions list from Time Machine and take a look. It has plenty of comments to help you understand what it does.

/System/Library/CoreServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/StdExclusions.plist

(You can copy that text, go to the Finder, click on the Go menu, select Go to Folder and paste that text to make it easy.)

Still, there are other times when it might be a good idea to exclude certain files to be backed up from Time Machine. Take Dropbox, for example. My current Dropbox has over 5.6 GB of files in it; most of them are common files I share with my iMore colleagues. I don’t need them backed up; most of the time I don’t need them at all.

Other cases where I’ve excluded files from being backed up: Big media files. I’ve ripped movies and TV shows from DVD that I want to watch at my leisure — kaiju stuff, predictably, like some old Gamera movies. Combined they occupy gigabytes on my hard drive. If my Mac blew out tomorrow and I had to restore, I wouldn’t be heartbroken to lose them; in fact, it’d be a small inconvenience to pop them in my SuperDrive and rip them again using the excellent Handbrake app. But I don’t want them choking my Time Machine drive either.

How to exclude files from Time Machine

  1. Hold the command key and type the space bar to bring up Spotlight.
  2. Type Time Machine and open the system preference (not the application).
  3. Click the Options… button in the lower right corner of the Time Machine system preference panel.
  4. Click the plus button then navigate to the folder you want to exclude. Click on the Exclude button.
  5. Click on Save.

Time Machine will tell you exactly how much you’re excluding, and will attempt to estimate the size of a full backup with those exclusions in place.

Amazon will let you watch Season One of Orphan Black for free on April 17 only

Amazon will let anyone watch Season One of Orphan Black, but the deal is only good for April 17.

Orphan Black is an Amazon Prime exclusive series, but on April 17 they will be allowing anyone to watch Season One. The show will be available for viewing through Amazon’s Instant Video app for TVs, connected devices and mobile devices, or online. All ten episodes of the first season will be available for the day for anyone to watch, whether a member of Amazon already or not.

“Orphan Black has been extremely popular with Prime members since the series became available exclusively in Prime Instant Video—that’s why we’re excited to make season one available to all customers for free, for a day,” said Michael Paull, Vice President of Digital Video at Amazon. “We saw an incredible response when we made our Golden Globe-winning original series Transparent available to everyone, so we’re giving customers an opportunity to try out another great series that Prime members already love.”

Currently there are two seasons released, with the third coming out on April 18. If you want to see what Orphan Black is all about, but don’t have a Prime membership, this is your chance. The offer is good for one day only, April 17, so set a reminder if needed.
