Could it be true: The Sony Xperia P2 is a sexy looking, beast of a flagship device

Despite how much of the Sony Xperia Z4 had leaked before its official announcement, we were still kind of surprised that it was announced as a Japan-only device. A global release of the device was hinted at, though we kind of assumed it would just be the same device with a slightly different configuration. However, a rumour has dropped today that this device isn’t simply going to be the same, but a completely differently designed device called the Sony Xperia P2. As the images below no doubt point out, the Xperia P2 is actually a fantastically good-looking device (if true) and harnesses its screen-to-bezel ration far better than the Xperia Z4 (a long time criticism of the series).

The rumour goes on to detail the specs of this Xperia P2 which includes a Snapdragon 810, 3GB RAM, 5.2-inch 1080p display, 12.1MP rear camera, 5.1MP front camera and 4,240mAh battery. That’s a very impressive resume, and one that we’d gladly take – the step down in rear camera is notable, but if it gives birth to that device, we’ll take it. Of course, this is all just hearsay right now, so make sure to take this all in with a grain of salt, but a global Xperia device is due for launch at the end of May, so we’ll just have to wait this one out for a little longer.

Samsung’s rebranding to Galaxy is total in Japan

samsung galaxy s6 edge unboxing aa (18 of 20)

Galaxy S6 Edge: Global Model

Earlier this month, we took a look at the recent Samsung rebranding situation that has occurred in Japan: the OEM’s logo was nowhere to be seen on any of the promotional material for the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, nor could it be found anywhere on the devices themselves. In the weeks that followed, the story was picked up by not only Korean media sources, but the Japanese media as well, not to mention countless tech sites.

While Samsung has only offered commentary to the effect of the name game being a desire to market the “Galaxy” brand, the problem is largely seen to be one of market share in Japan:

Apple-Japan-Nov-2014 Counterpoint

Since the original story, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have released, and suffice to say, the rebranding issue is far larger than it initially appeared. First, let’s take a look at the in-store “Galaxy Store” pop-up corners that exists in Japan:

width: 25%;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

The first image (1) is an example of the prior incarnation of the Galaxy Store. While the Samsung logo wasn’t exactly prominent, it could still be found on all product accessories, and on the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab S units and such on display. The next picture (2) shows the current design. The colors have been changed, and the new Galaxy logo is everywhere. The third picture (3) shows the product display: at the store this image was taken at (Yodobashi Camera Shinjuku), all prior Samsung products have been removed entirely. The final picture (4) shows the Accessory Corner.

Curiously enough, the only place the Samsung name actually appears is on the unsold old Accessory merchandise. These can be seen in the second picture (2) just below the giant orange “au” logo. One might assume these products are there only because devices like the Note Edge and various Galaxy Gear devices are still being sold by carriers (such as “au”).

Moving on, let’s compare the official cases:

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Just for reference purposes, images (1) and (2) show the official Samsung Japan Galaxy Note Edge Flip Wallet; note the Samsung logo is present on both the packaging and the actual accessory itself. The next pair of images (3-4) show the international Galaxy S6 Edge Flip Wallet: note the presence of the Samsung logo on the packaging as well as the accessory. Also note the manufacturing information in picture (3) clearly indicates Samsung.

Images (5-7) show the Japanese Galaxy S6 Edge Flip Wallet. Note the removal of the Samsung logo and redesigned packaging. Image (6) in particular is interesting for it simply lists a “Galaxy Customer Center” for customer support; nothing of Samsung. The final image (7) shows how the actual branding on the case has also been altered.

Finally, let’s move onto packaging:

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

The left image is shown for reference: the standard Galaxy S6 Edge box with Samsung branding. The right image shows the Japanese Galaxy Note Edge box which, despite the phone itself being devoid of Samsung’s logo, still used the company’s name on the box. The image below is the Japanese Galaxy S6 Edge box, complete with the OEM’s name removed.

(2) Japanese Galaxy S6 Edge Box

Finally, take a look at a video from Samsung Japan’s rebranded YouTube page:

The publisher has been rebranded as “Galaxy Mobile Japan”. Not exactly surprising given the previous topics covered, but still good indication of just how all-inclusive this decision has been. Also worth pointing out: the company’s Facebook page, as well as its Twitter account, also reflect the change.

Wrap Up

With this bold new direction, it remains to be seen just what will happen to Samsung’s Japan market share in the coming months. The rebranding, coupled with the release of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, might just be enough to change the tide in the Korean giant’s favor. Bolstering the potential is the appointment of a new COO last week, as well as the fact that no new domestic (Japanese) mobile phones have released in the past few months that might otherwise deter sales. Even the controversial Sony Xperia Z4 has yet to receive a release date.

While the decision to market everything as “Galaxy” in Japan might come across as a shock, consider that Samsung doesn’t have any other mainstream consumer products for sale in the Land of the Rising Sun. No computers, no printers, no televisions, no refrigerators… the Galaxy products are, for all intents and purposes, all it has to offer. With this in mind, it will be quite interesting to see what is to become of the upcoming Galaxy Gear VR, which will actually release in Japan on May 1st.

Get real-time rain, snow and lightning alerts from the updated Weather Channel app

The Weather Channel (1)

Choosing the perfect weather app to suit your specific needs is a subjective topic, some of us want or need up-to-the-minute updates while some are satisfied with a basic overview of the day’s forecast.  A weather app that can fulfil both these requirements is The Weather Channel app which has just received an update that brings a couple of new features.

The new features include:

  • Real-Time Rain and Snow: Users can set up alerts for exact, to-the-minute timing of when rain or snow will start based on their GPS location. The alert also provides an exact duration of how long the rain or snow will last, so users can plan for the next two hours.
  • Lightning Strike: The new lightning map layer provides real-time alerts for when lightning strikes near a user’s GPS location so they can stay out of the path of the storm.

The update is available via the Google Play Store. If you haven’t installed The Weather Channel app yet, just click the Play Store link below or scan the QR code with your device.

Thirty Meter Telescope’s website was hacked to protest its construction

A lot of people are obviously still unhappy that the Thirty Meter Telescope’s (TMT) construction was greenlit, because the project’s website was reportedly hacked on Sunday. A group called Operation Green Rights, which is associated with Anonymous, claims to be the brains behind the DDoS attack that took down the the TMT portal for a few hours. A post on its website says: “Nothing will ever justify the destruction of ecosystems; filthy money can never replace them. Stand with the Hawaiian natives against #TMT.” The group also claims to be behind another DDoS attack on Hawaii’s local website.

If you recall, many locals have been against the project from the time it was cooked up back in the 90s, because they consider Mauna Kea sacred. Environmentalists are also worried that the gargantuan telescope’s construction will ruin the local ecosystem and affect people’s drinking water. According to the folks behind the project, though, TMT will be a “zero waste discharge facility” and will be “no such danger” to the environment. Despite continued protests, it doesn’t look like construction’s been delayed again, so scientists might be able to use the telescope by its projected launch date in 2022.

Sky’s closing its dedicated 3D channel

Sky 3D

Once touted as the next big thing in television and film, 3D has ultimately failed to find an audience. It’s been five long years since Sky first introduced 3D programming, starting with a Premier League match between Manchester United and Chelsea, but after it chose not to schedule any matches in 3D for this past season, its TV future was called into doubt. Following that pretty big warning sign, Sky’s latest move appears to have driven the final nail in its coffin: from June, the broadcaster’s dedicated 3D channel will close and move on-demand.

That means all of Sky’s dedicated 3D content will be shared across the Sky Box Sets, Sky Movies and Sky Store sections of the TV Guide, with each section gaining a new 3D segment. Around 60 shows and films will be available, including Guardians of the Galaxy and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, as well as nature documentaries such as David Attenborough’s Flying Monsters. Good news if you’re still invested in 3D, but for the majority, Sky’s announcement will barely register on their TV radar.

Swedish armored vehicles get F1-inspired active suspension

CV9030;.vinter.Foto:.Kontakt:

BAE Systems recently announced that it has adapted the active damping suspension originally made for F1 cars to a Swedish Combat Vehicle, the CV90. This is reportedly the first system of its kind for a tracked vehicle, although BAE has been working on it for a few years. Unlike conventional, passive suspensions that simply absorb the shock of a bump or divot in the road as it occurs, active suspensions calculate vehicle speed against upcoming terrain to selectively tighten the suspension and keep the vehicle level. This eliminates both body roll and pitch acceleration as well as translates into a higher top speed since all four wheels (or in this case, both tracks) stay in firm contact with the ground. It works well enough for the CV90 to set a speed record on a “rough terrain course”, and for F1 to have banned the tech in 1993, although it may make a comeback.

http://www.engadget.com/embed-5min/?sid=577&playList=518792411,518792410&responsive=false

According to BAE, the CV90’s top speed increased about 35 percent with the new suspension — enough to outrun a main battle tank. It’s also improved gunner accuracy by reducing vehicle pitch acceleration by 40 percent and reportedly reduced the overall wear and tear for the armored vehicle. There’s no word on how quickly this new system will be applied the existing fleet of CV90s currently operating throughout Europe.

AR comic book spreads awareness about sexual violence in India

An augmented reality comic book called Priya’s Shakti aims to open people’s eyes to how badly rape survivors are treated in India. A life-sized version is now coming to the US, and you’ll have the chance to see it at the City Lore Gallery in NYC on May 7th. Priya’s Shakti tells the tale of rape survivor Priya, who was chosen by Parvati (the Hindu goddess of love, fertility and devotion) to become her envoy in the fight against gender-based violence. The 32-page comic has hidden AR animation and videos in its pages that you can see through the Blippar app for iOS, Android or Windows. Blippar also helped creators Ram Devineni, Vikas K. Menon and Dan Goldman add AR content to the murals painted in several locations around India to promote the project.

According to the comic’s official website, it was inspired by what happened to Jyoti Singh Pandey, the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern who was gang-raped on a bus in 2012. While Pandey and her companion unfortunately passed away, Priya survived, only to be shunned by her own family and blamed by authorities for her own assault. Thanks to Parvati’s blessing, she eventually became a tiger-riding champion of gender equality, encouraging people to join her quest to end sexual violence. “Priya is a new hero for a modern India,” Devineni told The Creators Project. If you can’t make it to the exhibit in NYC, don’t worry: you can still download the AR comic book, free, from the official site.

LG Urbane arrives to Google Store, G Watch R and Moto 360 prices slashed down

lg watch urbane aa 1

The LG Watch Urbane is one of the latest Android Wear watches to hit the market, and now it has arrived to the Google Store as well! Sporting a 1.3 inch P-OLED display with Gorilla Glass 3, and coming in your choice of Rose Gold or Silver body, the LG Urbane is one of the best looking Android Wear watches we’ve seen so far.

At $349 on the Google Store, the LG Urbane is the same price as the lowest end Apple Watch. For your money, this watch comes with the latest specs, offering 512 MB of RAM and a 1.2 GHz processor and coming stock with the new Android 5.1.1 software, the first watch to receive the update. To go along with the software update, it is also the first to be able to take advantage of the Wi-Fi chip that is built-in, alongside Bluetooth 4.0.

Meanwhile, if $349 is a bit too much money to be placed into a smartwatch, a few older Android Wear watches had their prices cut down. The G Watch R is now $249 from $299 and the Moto 360, which was for a while on the high end of smartwatches, is now only $179 from $249. In addition to these price cuts, both watches are slated to receive the Android 5.1.1 update. While the G Watch R will not have Wi-Fi capabilities due to hardware limitations, the Moto 360 will be able to connect to Wi-Fi.

With the Smartwatch market growing at a very fast rate, the LG Urbane will have tough competitio, namely the Huawei Watch which features a Sapphire Crystal display. There is no doubt that the LG Urbane is a top contender currently. One concern with smartwatches in general, however, is the duration of support. It does not seem likely that people will be inclined to buy a new watch every year or two, as they are with phones. It is up to Google and device manufacturers to determine how long a watch will receive updates.

Samsung employees create Backup Memory, an app for people with Alzheimer’s disease

samsung_the_backup_memory_title

Azer Jaafoura and his colleagues, employees of Samsung Electronics Tunisia, wanted to benefit people with Alzheimer’s disease with the power of technology. With the help of their employer and 3GS BBDO, Backup Memory was born. The app utilizes Bluetooth technology to provide the person with Alzheimer’s disease information of who is around them. The surrounding people need Backup Memory installed as well with their identity uploaded. Those with Alzheimer’s disease are then made aware of their relationship with that person and any photographs or videos shared.
