Project Fi | The Friday Debate Podcast 014

thumb aafdp 014

The gang gets together, catches up on the week’s personal happenings, and then gets talking about Project Fi. For those who don’t know, Project Fi is a new wireless service (basically a MVNO) by Google that focuses on the ability to move from mobile networks and Wi-Fi hotspots on the fly, as well as some simpler pricing for talk, text, and data. The functionality to switch among networks is only found on the Nexus 6, currently, however, but the gang talks about future possibilities. Project Fi is certainly an anticipated move from Google, but are we really happy with the details that have thus far come to light? Find out on the FDP!

The original Knights of Pen and Paper was a surprising hit with its meta-RPG approach, and its sequel, Knights of Pen and Paper 2, is arriving in May this year to roll its die again on PC, iOS and Android. Releasing its latest trailer, Paradox Interactive has shown off the game running at 1080p, 60fps, though the jury is still out whether this will be the case on the mobile versions as well. Still, the retro themed game is looking fantastic and as colourful as ever – check out the trailer below:

Admittedly, I haven’t played the first Knights of Pen and Paper, but this trailer is really tempting me to get into it now before the sequel arrives. Chief among the advertised improvements in Knights of Pen and Paper 2 are the following:

  • +2 to Impress: The retro adventure makes the leap from simulated 8-bit graphics to simulated 16-bit graphics, providing players with twice the bits
  • New Racial Feats: Customize your party members by choosing players such as the Goth or the Rocker, classes such as Wizard or Thief, and for the first time, races such as Dwarves and Elves
  • A Game of Throws: Face the whims of the d20 in an overhauled combat system, new crafting and loot, dynamically generated dungeons, and a variety of nail-biting saving throws
  • Entirely Too Many Gaming and Pop Culture Jokes: Seriously

For more information about Knights of Pen and Paper 2, you can visit the game website here.

Cricket Wireless announced this morning that they are adding in unlimited calling and messaging to their services. Users don’t have to pay extra to gain the coverage as it is part of the standard monthly plan offerings from $50 and up.

Cricket Wireless international

Now users get both Canada and Mexico calling for a simple low rate.

“Cricket is focused on giving consumers more of what they want and need,” said Janna Ducich, chief marketing officer, Cricket Wireless.  “More 4G LTE coverage nationwide than T-Mobile, Metro-PCS, Sprint or Boost.  More than 35 million songs from Deezer, the world’s largest streaming music catalog.  More ways to pay for your phones thanks to our new Phone Payment Plans.  And now, even more international calling options.  We want to make it easy for our customers to call almost any number — landline or mobile — in Mexico and Canada — whenever they want, and talk for as long as they want.”

As an added bonus, they are also offering the HTC Desire 510 for only $9.99 paired with a month of free service now through April 30th. (In retail stores only, with a number port and after 2 months of service.) The Desire 510 sport a simple 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 854×480-pixels and uses a 1.3GHz quad-core processor. For those needing to call up north and down south often it isn’t all that terrible. Considering the same device is sitting between $60 and $120 elsewhere and is $99.99 on their own site currently.

How much will the LG G4 cost? Signs point to it being more than a Galaxy S6

Just earlier today, it was revealed to us exactly what the production process is for LG to make those leather back covers for its latest flagship, the LG G4. Among other things, it was revealed that LG is using high-quality cow leather that takes 12 weeks to prepare properly, which really begs the question given all this extra effort to make this device: How much will the LG G4 cost? Well, according to South Korean telco, SK Telecom, the expected price of the LG G4 is going to be $825 USD. If this is true, this would make it 30 dollars more than the Samsung Galaxy S6 ($795), but still less than the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge which costs $908.

Keep in mind that these prices are region specific and that the numbers will not be exactly the same wherever you are in the world. However, it does highlight the relative price difference of the LG G4 compared to the Galaxy S6, which is itself not a cheap device, and puts a big question mark over whether people are going to be won over by LG’s bold strategy. As always, only time will tell.

Apple Watch Sport Destroyed in Torture Test Video

A CNet video shows the new Apple Watch Sport undergoing a variety of torture tests in a kitchen setting to see how well it holds up to a variety of abuse.

Previously, video bloggers have subjected the Sport’s Ion-X screen and the Sapphire screen to a variety of scratch tests.

The video shows the Apple Watch Sport holds up remarkably well in various scenarios. The watch is washed, submerged in water for 10 minutes, boiled, grated, spilled on, dropped and finally smashed with cast iron skillet. The Apple Watch Sport screen did shatter with the skillet impact, but seemed to remain perfectly functional until that point.

The Apple Watch was officially launched today with pre-order deliveries arriving for the first customers.

A lot of smartphone manufacturers have tried to emulate the leather feeling on their devices with an assortment of faux-leather options, however LG has revealed it is going all out to give its customers the genuine leather feeling with its latest flagship, the LG G4. In a blog post detailing the process by which the LG G4’s leather back covers are produced, LG revealed that the LG G4 uses high-quality cow leather which takes 12 weeks to properly process. Only the top most layer of the cow leather is used for the LG G4, which LG says is “among the most luxurious and expensive area in luxury leather goods”.

LG G4 uses high-quality cow leatherLG also mentions the curing processes it uses to make its leather more durable and authentic, including the aforementioned vegetable tanning and edge coating. There’s also a surprising amount of handmade work put into these covers, including the leather stitching and the painting and dyeing of the covers. It sounds like a properly, genuine process, and we can only imagine LG will suffer from some supply issues if this gets particularly popular, but we applaud the South Korean outfit for doing something a little different.

[Deal] Pick up a discounted Pioneer Android Auto stereo through Amazon

Android_Auto_Screenshot_01If you’ve been waiting for a good deal to get started with Android Auto, Amazon is hosting a deal that just might push you over the edge. They’re offering up Pioneer’s AVIC-8100NEX stereo with a heavy discount off the MSRP, you can pick up one for roughly 900 bucks. It’s definitely not cheap, but considering these things have an MSRP of 1400, that’s a hefty discount.

The stereo has a full touch screen interface and works with your Lollipop-powered device and the Android Auto app. Pioneer’s own interface and Apple CarPlay also work, in case you like to mix and match devices.

Amazon is currently sold out of the devices, but several third party sellers are still offering the units at a discount, some of which are even eligible for Prime shipping.

Say goodbye to the Nexus 7 as Google pulls listing from store page

Nexus_7_White_OfficialThe Nexus 7 was Google’s initiative to kick start affordable, well-performing 7-inch Android tablets. The first N7 was a fantastic device, and its 2013 successor was every bit as good at an affordable price point.

After releasing the Nexus 9 and not even mentioning the possibility of a refreshed 7-inch tablet, though, most of us could see the writing on the wall about the Nexus 7’s fate. Today, it’s finally happened, as Google no longer offers the Nexus 7 on their online store. Finding a listing for the Nexus 7 specifically says that it’s no longer for sale.

Google’s Nexus program has changed over the past couple of years, moving away from extremely affordable devices to more high-end devices that offer a flagship caliber experience without sacrificing development options and quick updates. Unfortunately, that move comes with flagship caliber price tags, too, which is evident in the Nexus 9’s doubled price tag over the Nexus 7.

It’s a sad day, but there are no shortage of excellent 7-inch tablets on the market right now. They may not be Nexus tablets, but plenty of them are still excellent, affordable options, so in that sense the Nexus 7 did exactly what it set to do before slowly fading away.

Cricket bolsters monthly plans with unlimited talk and text to Canada

cricket wirelessCricket has added a new feature to their monthly plans that will help users that need to communicate across the border with their cell phones. The carrier has baked in international calling and texting to Canada to their monthly plans, which already included communication to Mexico. Since their monthly plans already include unlimited talk and text, it won’t cost anything extra to send some texts up north without worrying about overages or hidden fees.

These plans start at $50 per month, or $45 if you don’t mind autopay, and they give you unlimited calling, text messaging, and 5 GB of high speed data. A fantastic selling point is that these plans are “all-in” and include taxes and fees in the upfront cost.

If you’ve never looked into moving your number to Cricket, now might be a smart time to start.

t mobile galaxy note 4 tweetT-Mobile’s Galaxy Note 4 has received technical acceptance for its Lollipop update, according to T-Mobile’s senior product manager on Twitter. Don’t bother checking your phone for the update just yet, since technical acceptance doesn’t mean an immediate rollout. It does mean, however, that you should be seeing an OTA update on your Note 4 sometime next week.

I know, the wait is going to be tough. You’ve made it this long, what’s another few days?
