Frenemies US and China join forces to fight cyber crime
The US and China are going to try to work together to take on cyber criminals. The Department of Homeland Security says that the US and China “intend to establish cyber discussions” on the path to reestablishing full government-to-government cyber security discussions. The DHS and China’s Ministry of Public Sector agreed to focus on cross border cyber-enabled crimes like money laundering and online child sexual exploitation. The renewed interest in cooperation is the result of DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson’s visit to Beijing.
As The Hill notes, cyber security talks between the two nations have become pretty awkward after the DOJ charged five members of the Chinese military for cyber espionage in May 2014. The year before, China accused the US of constantly hacking its defense sites. While the move to reopen cyber security discussions between the two nations will probably do little to curb state-sponsored espionage hacking, an open dialog could help squelch some of the more nefarious cyber criminals out there.

Renders of the Nubia Z9 reveal edge-to-edge display
ZTE has already launched the Nubia Z9 mini and the Nubia Z9 Max, with the standard Nubia Z9 prepping launch. Now, we are having our very first glimpse of the smartphone courtesy of a leak from China. This image which is said to be of the Nubia Z9, reveals yet another bezel-less device like the Oppo R7.
The press render above reveals a mild curve on both sides as well, indicating that this won’t be a conventional smartphone. Bezel-less devices are quickly becoming a trend now and with Chinese manufacturer competing amongst each other in this area, the future certainly looks good.
The image of the Nubia Z9 also reveals a physical home button on the bottom bezel, which will supposedly double as a fingerprint scanner as well. The back is pretty standard with the camera sensor and the dual tone LED flash located on the top left. We should get more details on the hardware of the Nubia Z9 very soon.

Windows Central photo contest: Water
The photo contest is back, and we’ve changed things up once again. We took a week off last week with it being the Easter holiday weekend for many of us on the Mobile Nations team. But now we’re going to change it up again and we’re giving more people more time to enter. The contests will now each run for two weeks, and we’re going to try out some new prizes along with it.
You’ll find all of the relevant information below. But onto this weeks topic, Water. Something commonplace in life, yet that still lends to taking many different styles of shot. The one up top is a quick sample I took this past weekend with the Lumia 640 XL on a gloomy afternoon. But you guys will certainly do better.
So, to the rules and a little housekeeping, announcing the winner of the last weekly photo contest!
A look at Vizio’s affordable M-Series 4K TVs
Earlier today, Vizio introduced its latest 4K TVs, the M-Series. In similar fashion to the P-Series from last year, which started at $1,000, this year’s models also come with an affordable price tag. But the M-Series ranges from $600 for a 43-inch model to $4,000 for the largest of the bunch, an 80-incher. Vizio says that with the M-Series, it was all about making refinements and not compromising in order to bring the price down even further. As such, most of the tech found on the P-Series has made its way into the new M-Series, like the LED panel and low-latency HDMI port (a feature loved by gamers, according to the company), among other things. Better yet, these UHD TV sets look great in person; they’re relatively thin, sport a solid industrial design and, most importantly, have a picture quality that’s not far behind its more expensive competitors. If you like what you see, some online retailers in the US are selling them as we speak.

Apple Collects 15% of Revenue Generated From HBO NOW and Other Apple TV Apps
While the terms of the Apple-HBO partnership behind the launch of the HBO NOW streaming TV service on Apple TV last month have not been disclosed, Re/code reports that some Apple TV content providers, including Netflix, Hulu Plus and MLB.TV, provide Apple with 15% of revenue generated from monthly fees for subscribers that sign up through the set-top box.

Apple collects 30% of revenue generated from the sale of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch apps, including in-app purchases, so the commission for Apple TV apps is half the amount developers are forced to hand over through the App Store. While the difference does not make a difference for consumers, the lower cut could make Apple TV a more attractive platform for HBO and other cable channels.
“But it’s even more interesting to think about Apple’s tiers of fees as we enter a world where lots of people are going to be selling Web video subscription products via platforms like Apple’s. Whether Apple is charging 15 percent or 30 percent a month, it’s giving distributors a much better deal than the 50 percent that pay TV providers usually charge premium networks like HBO. That makes the platform even more enticing to cable channels that are thinking about stepping outside of the traditional pay TV bundle — and it puts more pressure on the cable guys to sweeten the deals they already offer.”
The report adds that HBO is in negotiations to reach HBO NOW distribution deals with its existing pay TV distributors, enabling them to sell the service to their existing subscribers as an add-on. HBO is said to already have a deal in place with Cablevision and is reportedly in talks with Cox and Verizon as well. HBO NOW is exclusive to the Apple TV among streaming boxes for three months, at which point it should expand to other devices and platforms.
The rumored Google’s carrier service leaks, service comes complete with pay-per-GB and refunds for unused data
In the beginning of 2015, rumors began to swirl that Google was flirting with the idea of becoming a mobile carrier, later confirmed by Googler Sundar Pichai. That said service would run on Sprint’s network and possibly on T-Mobile’s as well. Possibly under the guise of Google LTE-A, little was known about the service. Well today that changes because a leaked app from a recent Nexus 6 image, gives us an inside look at what we could expect from the search giant’s network.
Before anything else is said, it should be noted that this, like all rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. Recently, a firmware image for the Nexus Phbalet was uploaded to motofirmware.center. Since that time, both the image and the site appear to be down but XDA has a mirror to said file. According to writers at Android Police the firmware image was a reconstruction of an internal build distributed to testers. That build, LVY47H, appears to have been built on or after Feb. 16.
While there may be other tidbits of things in that build, one application stands out: Tycho.apk. According to the guys at Android Police, the app is signed with a release key, however, that release key can’t be matched to any current or past keys Google has used. In the breakdown of the app, they found some interesting things.
Tycho is the codename given for the app and it will act as the interface for Google’s new carrier service. It is currently signed with a certificate that contains the name “nova” in the CN field. The application title, “Project Fi,” is rampant throughout the app.
As far as the app is concerned, users will be able to partially activate the service, request a new number or initiate a transfer within the app. Users may also be able to see status updates when things change, updates on problems and so on as well. As if that weren’t enough, it looks to be possible for users to also close an account, suspend an account or resume service from the app as well.
As far as Project Fi is concerned, it shows that users will only be charged for what they use. Like other carriers there will still be service plans but allotted data that goes unused will be credited at the end of the month. If users exceed their data, they’ll be charged the same flat rate for each gigabyte and from all appearances there is no artificially hiked overage fees. From what can be seen, there’s also a flat rate for talk and text.
For data, you’re charged per gigabyte. From some of the strings it also appears that there will be separate MMS pricing. Like the current hangouts model, if you’re calling in the US it’s free and international calls will be charged at a lower rate.
Some of the unknowns include whether or not multiple lines will be able to share data, but it appears that the app is prepared for a data-use-only scenario. It also appears that the app will allow users to switch their primary device at the press of a button, a boon for developers and people who need to switch phones constantly.
Strings in the app also confirm that Sprint and T-Mobile will be onboard during launch.
Another thing that was noted was Google’s usage tracking. Now before you get all up in a tizzy, it will act much like it does with your usage of other Google apps just with your call history. Basically, if you call a pizza place, an ad for it may show up during your usage. However, Google is publicly pushing the ability for people to opt out of such a service if they don’t want to be a part of it, something other carriers rarely do.
Other than that, there’s not much else we can get from the app. It’s anyone’s guess on when we’ll see this service. It could be that it’s announced at I/O this year and rolled out later. It could be that it’s rolled out without any announcement at all. Let’s face it, it’s not out of Google’s realm of possibility to do either.

Apple’s iOS 8.4 beta includes a brand-new music player
Think that iOS’ music player is overdue for a remake? You’re going to get your wish. Apple has released the first iOS 8.4 beta to developers, and its centerpiece is a shiny, new Music app. The refresh includes at least a few long-sought changes, including some borrowed from iTunes: There’s a mini player that sticks around while you’re browsing, global search and an “Up Next” song queue. You’ll also see a sleeker iTunes Radio interface that helps you discover new tracks. There’s no sign of the Beats-based music service rumored to come alongside 8.4, but that’s not supposed to show up until Apple’s developer conference at the earliest — if it exists, it’s probably going to stay under wraps for a little while.

The Verizon Wireless version of the LG G3 finally is receiving an update to Android Lollipop, according to a press release on its site.
In an attached PDF, Verizon has documented the features of the update. These include: material design, an improved runtime, lock screen notifications, the ability to hide sensitive notifications, smart lock, searchable settings, floating action buttons, and screen pinning.
With lock screen notifications, notifications can appear on the lock screen based on user settings. This allows up to two notifications to be displayed. A numeric indicator pops up for any additional ones. Also, notifications can be swiped to display the next one without needing to unlock the phone. The user can even set all or some of the, to be hidden. When “Show all notifications” is chosen, pressing the indicator or swiping the list downward will it.
Smart Lock provides two ways to unlock the G3. The first is through face recognition, and the second is through a simple swipe in place of a security lock when the device is connected to a “Trusted” Bluetooth device added via Smart Lock settings.
The floating action buttons setting adds buttons to some of the main apps (Clock, Contacts, Email, Messaging, and Music) that involve adding new items.
One of the last features is screen pinning, found on the Recent apps screen. This locks the G3 to just a single app, preventing the launching of others until it is unpinned through touching and holding the back and recent buttons at the same time. Only the back button will work until the app is unpinned.
