MultiROM

MultiROM was developed some time ago, and with it came the spectacular ability to be able to boot into different ROM’s seamlessly. Before if you wanted to wanted to try or use another ROM, you would have to backup and wipe your current configuration and then reflash it when you wanted to use it again. For a normal user, that may not seem like such a hassle if you found yourself only doing so sparingly. For flash junkies though, that could easily become a nuisance. If you are currently using a Nexus 6, you too can now use MultiROM to sate your need to flash.

The tool added support for the Nexus 6 today, and can be downloaded using the link provided below. While the tool appears to be stable enough to use for general usage, you should still remember that there is always a risk associated when making modifications to your smartphone. With that said, if you should head over to XDA to get more information and download the tool if you have a Nexus 6 and you want to add some new life to your device.

Samsung working on multiple themes for the Galaxy S6 theme store

samsung_galaxy_s6_front_back_slanted_blueWith the Galaxy S6 global release just a few days away, Samsung is preparing their theme store for the phone so users will have a few different options to spice up their phones on launch day.

The S6 offers a handful of themes already, but the theme should be populated with a few more on April 10th. There’s plenty of diversity in what Samsung is offering, including some darker themes to take advantage of the AMOLED display of the S6 and S6 Edge, but there are also a few more colorful, flashy themes, if that’s your thing.

There’s still no word on exactly when third-party developers will be able to publish themes to Samsung’s theme store, but it’ll happen sooner or later. If you just can’t wait, though, there are plenty of third-party launchers on the Play Store to satisfy your customization needs in the meantime.

Intel’s latest Atom chips are meant for all of your connected devices

Intel’s latest Atom processors aren’t just for phones and tablets — they’re going to show up in many of the other devices you own before long. The chip maker has unveiled a new version of its Atom x3 (aka SoFIA) that’s designed to run Internet of Things gadgets, such as smart appliances and outdoor sensors. They have built-in 3G or LTE data to stay online, and they’re tough enough to survive extreme temperatures that would faze regular silicon. Unsurprisingly, these processors are made with Linux and Android in mind. There’s no word from Intel as to which companies are using the new x3, but you’ll definitely have to be patient. The developer kits don’t start shipping until the second half of the year, so you probably won’t see a truly wide range of Atom-powered gear until 2016.

Intel’s made a tinier, longer-range depth camera for phones

Intel RealSense on a smartphone prototype

Intel’s been a huge backer of gesture control plus 3D scanning, and so far it’s managed to integrate its RealSense technology into select desktops, laptops, tablets and even drones. The missing piece of the puzzle? Smartphones. But that’s no longer the case with Intel’s latest RealSense camera, as showed off by Intel CEO Brian Krzanich at IDF in Shenzhen today. The new module is significantly smaller and slimmer than the previous version, and the lower thermal output helps, too. As such, Intel’s able to fit it into a 6-inch smartphone prototype, though Krzanich, an exec known for taking risks with live demos, didn’t turn on said device on stage.

On a related note, Intel also took the opportunity to announce its partnership with Chinese online retail giant JD to help improve the latter’s warehouse management. Using a tablet with integrated RealSense depth camera, Intel showed off how the system can quickly measure the required box sizes for products of all shapes, and consequently summing up the space needed for shipment or storage. In another demo, Krzanich unveiled a Skylake-based development kit in the form of a Windows 10 tablet, which used a RealSense camera to quickly scan his face to log him in.

There’s no word on availability nor detailed specs of the new RealSense camera just yet, but we can safely assume that it’ll be just as capable of performing the aforementioned tasks on smartphones.

Alleged photo of the Sony Xperia C4 leaks out

Sony Xperia Z3V-21

Sony‘s upcoming Xperia Z4 flagship may be grabbing headlines as of late, but there may be yet another Sony handset on the horizon. The device is called the Xperia C4 (codenamed Cosmos), and according to some alleged images, will feature a very prominent front-facing camera. Multiple renders and prototypes of the device have leaked out in the past few weeks, but now popular smartphone leaker @upleaks is back with another prototype image.

CB-FwD2VIAADrXw

As a followup to last year’s C3 handset which Sony claimed was “the world’s best selfie smartphone”, judging by the image, the C4 will feature a similar design. Other than the software, large front-facing camera and LED flash, not much of the device seems to differentiate itself from past Sony handsets.

The popular leaker also suggests that the Xperia C4 will carry the model number E53XX, which fits in with Sony’s past model number trends. Other than the few details we’ve outlined here, not much other information has been leaked about the device. Other than the possible release date of a May-June timeframe, the majority of its internals are still somewhat of a mystery. Given the mid-range specifications of the C3, this new device likely won’t launch as a flagship level handset.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we hear more about this new device.

Huawei_Logo_01_TA_CES_2014

Chinese manufacturer Huawei has just launched the SnapTo handset in the U.S. featuring Android 4.4 KitKat. But it seems like the company has some other plans for its existing crop of smartphones as well as a few relatively old ones.

The company has released the full list of devices that will be receiving the Android 5.0 update which includes the Honor 6 Plus, while a couple of old handsets like the Honor 4X are included as well. Prominent among the devices are the

Customers will have some waiting to do though, as the company is not expected to begin the update rollout until June, starting with the Mate 7.  This will be followed by the P7, Mate2, 6 Plus, and the Honor 4X (Che2-TL00M) which will receive the update in July. The rest will be updated to Android 5.0 by September 2015 according to the company. Huawei will add its UI layering on top of vanilla Android, so don’t expect this to be anything like stock Android.

Two popular 3DS games get sequels on smartphones and tablets

New games in two acclaimed 3DS franchises, Professor Layton and Fantasy Life, are heading exclusively to iOS and Android. During an event today, Japanese developer Level-5 announced it will bring Professor Layton and Fantasy Life to smartphones and tablets in Japan only (for now). Siliconera reports the next Professor Layton game is called Layton 7 and it seems to be a departure from the series’ puzzle-solving roots, offering a card game with fortune-telling aspects where players attempt to figure out who the “Vampire” is. The new Fantasy Life game, Fantasy Life 2: Two Moons and the Village of God, sticks closely to the franchise’s role-playing script but offers more city-building options, Siliconera says.

Layton 7 and Fantasy Life 2 are due out for iOS and Android devices in Japan in the summer. Level-5 revealed Layton 7 in 2013 and at the time it said the game would come to 3DS as well as mobile devices, though Nintendo’s handheld was absent from today’s announcements. Nintendo is a new passenger on the smartphone and tablet train: In March it announced an initiative to create original games for mobile devices as part of a partnership with handheld platform developer DeNA.

Level-5 also revealed today that Yo-Kai Watch, a creature-collecting game for 3DS that’s extremely popular in Japan, is heading to North America, Europe, Latin America, Korea, New Zealand and Australia. Nintendo is publishing the series, and Hasbro will manufacture toys related to the game. Siliconera reports that Yo-Kai Watch is due out in North America in 2016.

Retail Packaging for Apple Watch and Bands Potentially Revealed

A series of photos have surfaced on social media today that provide a first look at what could be the retail packaging for the Apple Watch and individual bands. Instagram user Jeremy Gan posted the photos to his profile this afternoon, showing off what appears to be a 42mm stainless steel Apple Watch with Milanese Loop within its official packaging and brown leather band in a separate box.

Apple Watch Retail Packaging Photos
We cannot guarantee the veracity of these photos, and it is entirely possible that the retail packaging is not official. The long, narrow box for the Apple Watch band in particular appears consistent with an image that appeared on Apple’s jobs page last month, which at the time was speculated to be retail packaging for bands. We’ll update the post as we learn more details about the authenticity of these photos.
