Samsung’s earnings guidance suggest a continued dip in profits ahead of Galaxy S6 launch
Samsung has posted their first quarter earnings guidance, and like everyone expected, it’s more of the same. The company isn’t breaking any records with their profits, but they’re also not failing. Q1 sales are sitting around 47 trillion Korean won, and operating profit is around 5.9 trillion won. Both of these numbers are substantial decreases from their performance in 2014.
Expectations for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are high, and those are both right around the corner. Samsung expects to move tons of units, so this quarter will be critical for the company to launch into the rest of 2015.

OneDrive for Windows Phone picks up bug fixing update in version 4.10
Late tonight, Microsoft has released a small update for OneDrive on Windows Phone. Tonight’s update brings the version number to 4.10, a small change from the previous 4.9 released nearly two weeks ago.
Daily Roundup: Hacking in television, PlayStation Home and more!
Catch up on all of today’s top stories in the Daily Roundup. Find out if the hacking portrayed in prime-time television is realistic, read about PlayStation Home shutting down and get the details on Intel’s PC on a stick. Head past the break to read about these stories and others you might have missed.
High-tech TV: How realistic is the hacking in prime-time shows?
A group of five impeccably dressed high school girls are almost murdered dozens of times by the same, mysterious stalker and the police in their idyllic small town are either corrupt or too incompetent to care. How do the girls fight back? Hacking, of course. At least, that’s one way they do it on Pretty Little Liars. “Hacking” is the deus ex machina in plenty of scenarios on Pretty Little Liars and other mainstream programs, allowing people to easily track, harass, defend and stalk each other 30 to 60 minutes at a time.
There’s no longer a place like PlayStation Home
PlayStation Home, Sony’s answer to the Second Life question no one asked, was never where the company’s heart lived. Maybe its greasy, suppurating id lived in those gleaming neon halls, somewhere between the bowling alley full of dead-eyed polygon people and the virtual shopping mall. You know the PlayStation Home shopping mall I’m talking about. It’s the one where you could spend very real money on an entirely fake golden statue of a robot lady with impossibly proportioned breasts.
Intel’s PC on a stick is now available for pre-order
Like the idea of Intel’s Compute Stick turning your TV into a full-fledged Linux or Windows PC? You can finally plunk down some cash to get one. Online stores (including Amazon and Newegg) have started taking pre-orders for the HDMI dongle, which is now expected to ship by late April rather than the originally planned March release.
Samsung fights fears of Galaxy S6 bending with a video
Sadly, the he-said-she-said disputes over bending smartphones aren’t ending any time soon. Samsung has responded to SquareTrade’s allegations that the Galaxy S6 Edge is easily bendable by posting a video that shows the official stress tests for both the Edge and the regular S6. As you might expect, both devices hold up in this company-sanctioned clip — they can withstand up to 79 pounds of force at three different points, which is enough to snap five pencils in half.
Enjoy a terrifying 10,000 foot GoPro camera freefall
Got your dramamine and/or hallucinogenics? Either will work for the latest video starring a tough, but not-very-well-attached GoPro camera. Its owner lost it during a skydiving formation gone wrong, and it continued the rest of the 10,000 feet down without him, spinning crazily the whole way. But the camera and video survived and were picked up by a resident of Kristianstad, Sweden, who figured it had been sitting in a meadow “for several years.”
The next Apple TV won’t play 4K video
The long-rumored Apple TV update is expected to do many things, including run apps and stream a TV service, but there’s one thing it isn’t expected to do: play 4K video. A source for BuzzFeed News’ John Paczkowski (who’s historically accurate with such rumors) claims that Apple’s upcoming media hub will stick to 1080p because 4K technology is “still in its infancy.”
Caltech wants to equip phones with built-in 3D scanners
Wouldn’t it be great if we can use phones to 3D scan every day objects for printing? A research team from Caltech has designed a cheap and tiny camera chip that could make that happen. Even better, the team claims it can take 3D scans so precise, it could lead to “replica[s] accurate to within microns of the original object[s].” The silicon chip called nanophotonic coherent imager (NCI) is less than a millimeter square, so it can fit within actual phones or cameras without the need for extra hardware.

‘Star Wars: The Digital Movie Collection’ Coming to iTunes Friday, April 10 [Mac Blog]
All six Star Wars movies will be available digitally for the first time this Friday, April 10 on iTunes and other digital stores, Disney, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox have announced. The movies will be available to purchase separately and as a collection, and come with two never-before-seen special features.
“We’re thrilled that fans will be able to enjoy the Star Wars saga on their digital devices wherever they go,” commented Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “These films broke new ground in technology, design, sound, and visual effects, and we’ve created some very special bonus material which delves into the saga’s rich history, including new and never-before-released conversations between legendary Star Wars artists — the masters who helped George bring his iconic universe to life.”
The new special features are broken into two new categories. The first is titled “Conversations”, which has key members of the cast and crew talking about the productions of all the films. The second is titled “Star Wars: Discoveries From Inside”, which features new looks at the making of the movies, from models and miniatures to costume design.
The full list of bonus features can be found at the Star Wars website. The versions included in The Digital Movie Collection are not the original theatrical versions of the films, and are instead the altered versions found in the Blu-Ray editions of the movies. It’s currently unclear how much the films and overall collection will be priced. However, the New York Times reports they will not be available for rent.
Pixel OFF turns some AMOLED screen pixels black to save power

As you may already know, an AMOLED display differs from the LCD variety in that its blacks are darker. This is created by nearly turning off or completely turning off the pixel when it is assigned to the color black. In turn, the parts of the screen displaying “black” use much less if any power, which theoretically creates better battery life.
With Pixel OFF, users of AMOLED devices can reduce their power consumption by overlaying a mesh of evenly spaced black pixels on their displays. The app is free, but a $1.68 in-app purchase will unlock other filters. It does not require root and can be started with the phone or activated at a certain battery level.

According to AndroidPolice, reviews of Pixel OFF are positive. One user explained that he or she got “16 hours on-time with just 28% battery life.” Although, the tested device and the screen brightness are not known. It’s probably a good idea to test the app and see if it is better than turning the brightness down before considering the in-app purchase.

You can (legally) download the ‘Star Wars’ movies starting Friday
While the world waits for the next entries in the Star Wars saga (Episode VII on December 18th, followed by the Rogue One spinoff next year and Episode VIII in 2017), Disney, Fox and Lucasfilm have finally worked it out so you can buy the movies as digital copies. Sure the Blu-ray set came out a few years ago, but if physical media isn’t your thing then you can purchase the full set online Friday (yes, they’re still the “special” editions). It will be available globally through retailers like Vudu, Xbox, Google Play, iTunes, Amazon and more. If you need a reason to do the digital double-dip, take a peek at the promised new extras, like “Discoveries from Inside” featurettes for each movie, and “Conversations” between key contributors. There’s no word on the price in the PR, but Vudu is taking pre-orders on the full set for $90 (US) and Google Play shows the individual movies for $20 each — in case you’re wondering, the Blu-ray set is listed on Amazon for the same price.

Apple Watch Makes Reality TV Debut on ‘The Voice’ Judge Pharrell Williams’ Wrist
Just a few days before the Apple Watch is available for pre-order on April 10, the device has been spotted in what seems to be its first TV appearance. The Watch, which appears to be the stainless steel version with a white sport band, is on the wrist of musical artist Pharrell Williams as he judges on NBC’s singing competition show The Voice.

Thus far, Apple has carefully curated the Apple Watch’s image and has exercised control on how the device is portrayed in media. Apple’s marketing efforts have so far been split between posing the Watch as a fashion statement and fitness accessory. Williams is often known for his unique style, recently winning the Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
The fitness side of the Apple Watch has been promoted on the covers of fitness magazines like Fitness Magazine on the wrist of Kate Bock, Self magazine on the wrist of Candice Swanepoel and model Christy Turlington as she writes about how the Watch helps her train for a marathon on a personal blog on Apple’s website. The fashion side of the Apple Watch has been on display in magazines like Vogue, Style, East Touch and YOHO. It was also shown off at an exclusive event at Parisian boutique Colette.
As the launch of the Apple Watch gets closer, and people are able to try them on within Apple Stores, it’s likely the device will continue to appear on TV, magazines, billboards and more as Apple attempts to market the device to a wide variety of potential customers. The Apple Watch will be available beginning April 24, but will be available for pre-order and in-store try-ons starting April 10.
Judge says you can serve divorce papers through Facebook
How do you end a marriage to someone who’s purposefully avoiding your divorce papers? Try Facebook. A Manhattan Supreme Court judge has ruled that a New York woman can serve her divorce summons by messaging her soon to be ex-husband on Facebook. He’ll get the notifications once a week on the social network for three weeks, and it’s splitsville if he either acknowledges a message or refuses to respond.
The ruling could set an important precedent for divorces in at least New York state, since you may no longer need to track someone down to deliver a breakup notice in person. And in this case, that kind of remote notice is necessary — the husband doesn’t have a fixed address or known workplace, so his wife would have a much harder time filing for divorce unless investigators got lucky.
