The Galaxy S6 Active is getting closer to its official release. A device currently titled as “SM-G890A” has been spotted on Bluetooth.org.
What we know about the Galaxy S6 Active currently is that it will be a water resistant and dust resistant version of its namesake (Galaxy S6) just like the other Active branded Galaxy phones have been.
What we will be looking at is a 5.1 inch display featuring a Super AMOLED+ QHD panel. We have 3 GB of RAM along with a Exynos 7420 SoC all paried with 32 GB of storage.
The only difference from the S6 we anticipate is a larger 3500mAh battery. It is also unlikely that the Galaxy S6 Active will sport the same glass build of the S6 as that would compromise the durability of the device.
As per usual, it is also expected that AT&T will be the first to carry the S6 Active.

HTC USA’s new ad with Robinson Cano involves smashing the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5 and the LG G3 [Video]
HTC USA has marked the official arrival of the baseball season by posting a new commercial with its recently acquired star campaigner Robinson Canó who plays for the Seattle Mariners in the MLB.
While it’s completely different from the mildly crazy Robert Downey Jr ads we’ve seen recently, it’s certainly not better. The ad involves Canó taking his position with a baseball bat in his hand and literally smashing the iPhone 6, the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 into pieces.
This is followed by the following text – “It takes focus and power to compete at the highest level. It takes precision to excel. It’s about playing the game for a bigger cause. And sometimes you just have to challenge convention. Let’s play ball.”
While we don’t mind the good natured ribbing against industry rival, it seems a little too extreme to be smashing phones to get your point across. What do you think about this new ad? Sound off below.
HTC has partnered with @RobinsonCano & we can’t wait to start the season! Follow every massive hit with #CANOCRUSH!

Explore Feature in App Store Powered by ‘Ottocat’ Technology Apple Acquired in 2013
While most Apple acquisitions become public knowledge shortly after they happen, there are acquisitions that go largely under the radar until months or years afterwards. TechCrunch has recently learned of one such acquisition, which may have happened in 2013. Apple is said to have purchased Ottocat, a small startup specializing in search technology.
Ottocat’s technology is said to be behind the “Explore” app discovery function in the App Store. The Explore tab in the iOS App Store lets users find apps in different categories plus nearby apps.

TechCrunch has learned that Apple quietly bought a startup called Ottocat some time ago, which had developed a system to organize and surface apps on the app store based on “nested” categories of increasing specificity. A version of that system now powers the “explore” tab in Apple’s app store.
According to TechCrunch, though there’s little evidence on LinkedIn to suggest the acquisition happened, Ottocat co-founder Edwin Cooper was the author of a patent that was granted to Apple, which Cooper appears to have filed as an Apple employee. The patent, “System and Method for Divisive Textual Clustering by Label Selection Using Variant-Weighted TFDIF,” which is related to the App Store’s explore feature.
TechCrunch has some information on how Ottocat worked, explaining that its technology aimed to introduce categories for better app discovery to assist users looking to find apps in specific areas when they didn’t have an app in mind to search for, which sounds very similar to what the Explore feature in the App Store does.

The premise was to do away with keywords by categorizing apps into increasingly more specific subcategories that worked on a “drill-down” principle — eliminating the guesswork and potential inaccuracy of keywords altogether.
The Ottocat website originally went down in October of 2013, so that may have been around the time that the acquisition occurred. The original error message stated “Ottocat is no longer available,” but the website is now completely defunct. Explore was announced as an App Store addition in June of 2014.
Google and ChowNow team up to offer mobile payments via Wallet at several restaurants
Google has teamed up with ChowNow in bringing Wallet to several other restaurants across the U.S. Thanks to this newly forged partnership, thousands of small restaurants will allow users to make payments for their meal using Google Wallet.
Most restaurants have also updated their mobile apps by adding the new Google Wallet option during checkout. Any new restaurants that will be added to the ChowNow network will have support for Google Wallet by default, which is good news.
This move will mean that users will not require to manually input their Google Wallet credentials for every app, thus saving time. ChowNow caters to a small group of small town eateries which only the locals might be aware of, but still, it’s a good move by Google which should increase adoption of its mobile wallet service to a great extent.

Google Partners With ChowNow To Bring Google Wallet To Thousands Of Independent Restaurants
The addition of Google Wallet makes mobile ordering easier than ever for customers and restaurant owners
LOS ANGELES, April 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — ChowNow, the online ordering and marketing platform for restaurants, is proud to announce a new partnership with Google that brings Google Wallet to thousands of independent restaurants across the United States. As of today all ChowNow restaurant clients’ ordering apps have been updated to include Google Wallet at no additional cost, and all new restaurant clients will receive it as a standard feature.
“We continue to uphold our mission of helping independent restaurants compete with larger chains by providing them with technology that would be both difficult and cost-prohibitive for them to build themselves,” said Chris Webb, CEO of ChowNow.
The addition of Google Wallet benefits both restaurants and their customers. Rather than manually inputting their credit card number and billing address, customers with an Android phone can simply tap the “Buy with Google” button. As a result of the added convenience and reduced ordering times, restaurants should see increased order volumes, and hence a more profitable to-go business. With 70 million Android phones currently in use the addition of Google Wallet has broad appeal.
“In addition to increased convenience, Google Wallet also offers an extra layer of security to both consumers and restaurants,” says Webb. With Google Wallet Fraud Protection 100% of verified unauthorized Google Wallet transactions in the US are covered. “At ChowNow we pride ourselves in strengthening the relationship between our restaurant clients and their customers, and now that relationship is stronger and more secure than ever. This partnership is a win for everyone involved.”

Google MVNO might offer free global roaming

Google has been working on their own MVNO, as has been reported earlier this year. While not a whole lot has been announced officially, lots of rumors have been spreading as to what this might look like, such as Google being able to offer service plans for cheap by purchasing them in bulk (sort of like a Costco for mobile network plans). Another rumor is that this service won’t be tied to just one carrier or cellular data type, but rather your phone will just use whichever carrier is offering the better service at the moment you’re using it. So if you live in San Francisco, you might regularly be using T-Mobile’s network, but when you travel to Los Angeles, Sprint might have better service, so your phone will automatically connect to that (no actual evidence supporting that, just an example). It looks like Google might offer this globally as well.
According to Telegraph, Google is in talks with mobile service provider giant Hutchison Whampoa to offer users free service when traveling internationally, much like T-Mobile currently does. Hutchison Whampoa is already trying to do this across Europe with its Three UK mobile network. So this partnership would be quite natural. However, if this deal between Google and Hutchison Whampoa is successful, than Google might be able to offer service globally for the same, low-cost. If Google can achieve that, than it will do a lot to place pressure on the mobile carriers, where pressure is much-needed these days.

Samsung releases its own bend-test of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

Recently, we posted about how Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, HTC One M8 and iPhone 6 Plus went through a pressure test, where it was concluded that both iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy S6 Edge bends at the same force. Although, it seems Samsung was not happy with the bend-test, hence they decided it do it themselves. They also decided to put the Samsung Galaxy S6 through the test as well. In the video below, you will see both Samsung flagships going through the test:
The bottom line is that both phones can stand the force of up to 80, and maybe a little more. As Samsung points out that “only 66 pounds of force is put on a phone while in someone’s back pocket”. By referring to the video created by SquareTrade, Samsung says that the condition and force under which the Galaxy S6 Edge was tested is a very ‘specific’ situation and it rarely occurs under normal circumstances.
Of course, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge is not made out of titanium, so it is obvious that it will break after a certain point. What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comment box below

Sony Xperia C4 possibly revealed by a new leak
Sony launched the large sized Xperia C3 phablet back in August last year in some of its key midrange markets. It seems like the Japanese manufacturer is now prepping the launch of a successor, aptly named the Xperia C4.
The image of the smartphone accessed by a popular Sony fan blog reveals the handset’s massive front facing camera accompanied by an LED flash, indicating that this will be targeted towards the selfie loving audience.
It is further said that the Xperia C4 will be officially unveiled by May or June this year running Android 5.0 Lollipop. The device will be supposedly sold in white, black and turquoise color variants. Unfortunately, there are no additional details available on the hardware of the smartphone, but we expect that to be revealed in due time.
