The Sony Cosmos could actually be the Xperia C4

XperiaC4

Recently, a Sony device codenamed Cosmos, has recently leaked in not one, but two different leaks. Well another one has serviced today from device leaker upleaks. This rumor suggests that the Sony Cosmos will be introduced as the Xperia C4.

Last year, the Xperia C3 was unveiled in July. The C4 is expected to have 4G LTE support and will be an incremental update to last year’s C3. It will come with Sony’s lightweight UI on top of Android 5.0, though we’re not sure if it’ll be Android 5.1 instead.

Everything else is up in the air on the device in terms of specs, pricing and availability. But we’ll keep you posted as we find out more. Stay tuned.

Facebook Launches New ‘Riff’ iOS App for Collaborative Videos [iOS Blog]

Facebook today launched a new app called Riff, which is designed to let people create collaborative videos with their friends by linking multiple videos surrounding a single topic.

After downloading the app, anyone can begin a Riff video by shooting a clip and giving it a topic. From there, your friends will get a notification to watch what’s been uploaded already and an invite to add their own clips to the topic, building on the video. As the video is passed along and more people add to it, it gets longer and longer.

Video must be shot within the Riff app, as there are no uploading tools, and to encourage people to submit their own videos to contribute, there’s no liking or commenting. Because some of the Riffs can get long, there are fast forwarding tools, and original Riff creators can moderate new clips to delete portions of the video if necessary.

Anyone can start by creating a video. All you have to do is give it a topic, like #AprilFools, then your friends can view it and choose to add their own clips on that topic. Once a friend adds a clip to your video, your friend’s friends will also be shown the video in Riff and will be able to add to it. The potential pool of creative collaborators can grow exponentially from there, so a short video can become an inventive project between circles of friends that you can share to Facebook, or anywhere on the internet, at any time.

Facebook has an example video from Riff available on the new Riff website, created by the cast of An American in Paris on Broadway.

Riff is the latest app coming from Facebook’s Creative Labs project, which has also produced apps like Paper, Groups, Rooms, Mentions and Slingshot. Of the apps that have been created by Facebook’s Creative Labs, Paper, a news curation app with a magazine-style layout, has proven to be the most popular.

In an interview with TechCrunch, Riff‘s product manager Josh Miller said Riff was inspired by the videos that were shared during the Ice Bucket challenge, where thousands of people dumped buckets of ice water on their heads in support of ALS and then challenged friends to do the same.

Riff can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

BlackBerry Leap pricing set at $349 in Canada

While BlackBerry has opened the doors to pre-orders for the BlackBerry Leap in the US, UK, Germany and France, they interestingly left pre-orders for Canada off the list and opted to just simply state the device was ‘coming soon’. Since then, ShopBlackBerry has been updated slightly to show the pricing for the BlackBerry Leap in Canada which is set at $349, thanks to the exchange rate.

IHS: Wireless charging is growing quickly, industry revenue to hit $15 billion by 2024

samsung galaxy s6 wireless charger 1

We live in a world filled with quad and octa-core superphones, with resolutions that are as high as QHD. Screen sizes have increased, storage sizes have gotten bigger. The evolution of the phone can be seen in almost every component… and then there’s battery life. While batteries are getting a little bigger to compensate for increased energy demand, overall battery lifespans are about the same as ever.

At least until next-gen battery technologies surface that allow greater battery life, most manufacturers are instead settling with making the charging experience a little more convenient, pushing quick chargers and wireless charging. Speaking of the latter technology, a new report from research firm IHS has just been published indicating that total wireless power receiver shipments hit 55 million units in 2014, with the firm predicting that the figure will jump to more than 120 million this year.

At least until next-gen battery technologies surface that allow greater battery life, most manufacturers are instead settling with making the charging experience a little more convenient, pushing quick chargers and wireless charging.

While quick charging is just now starting to take off, mostly in flagship level devices, wireless charging compatibility is increasingly common in mid and high-end smartphones. The only catch is that OEMs don’t generally include wireless chargers with new phones, and so it’s up to consumers to purchase them separately.

Convincing consumers to buy a wireless charger isn’t always easy, especially if buyers don’t realize that their phones can wirelessly charge in the first place, or if they simply haven’t been convinced of the merit of such technology. An extra barrier is the fact that there are multiple wireless charging standards out there that aren’t reverse compatible, so consumers must know enough about the charging mats they intend to buy to ensure they work with their phones.

A few reasons why wireless growth seems inevitable

So why is IHS so confident that wireless charging shipments will more than double this year when compared to 2014?

First, there’s the fact that Samsung is aggressively pushing wireless charging with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. These two handsets are the first Android smartphones to support both PMA and QI charging standards — the two most commonly used wireless charging standards on the market. And it seems probable that Samsung will repeat this move with other devices, such as the Note 5, later this year.

IKEA will soon introduce furniture with integrated QI charging.

IKEA will soon introduce furniture with integrated QI charging.

You might also recall an article we published last month about Ikea’s plans to introduce furniture that has QI charging baked right in. This would include items like tablets, sofas, and the list goes on. The first products to offer QI charging from Ikea will be rolling out next month.

There are likely plenty of other reasons, like consumers growing tired of cord clutter and the fact more phones are incorporating wireless technology, but bottom-line is that this market is just starting to really heat up. The wireless charging industry is expected to reach revenue levels of $1.7 billion this year, with industry revenue anticipated to jump as high as $15 billion by 2024.

What’s next?

Right now, wireless charging is limited to a pad, and is arguably not that much more convenient than simply plugging in a cord. This will change in the future, as technologies from Energous and Ossia Cota aim to deliver wireless charging over distances higher than 15 feet. We imagine that this is really only the beginning.

Ossia Cota promises wireless charging via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Cota WiFi wireless charging

Although still struggling for broad adoption, wireless charging technology has been steadily gaining steam. In fact, the new Samsung Galaxy S6 supports both PMA and WPC standards, but there are some other interesting and promising technologies on the horizon, too. Today Ossia Inc. announced its latest breakthrough in its Cota remote wireless power system, allowing for wireless power to be integrated into almost any WiFi or Bluetooth equipped device.

Unlike current PMA and WPC charging standards, which operate over short distances, Cota enables wireless charging at distances up to 30 feet. Cota makes use of signals in the WiFi and Bluetooth spectrum to transfer wireless power at greater distances. Cota can provide 1 watt of power to charge your gadget, which is about a third of the power offered through a USB connection. Furthermore, Ossia’s Cota promises to make use of existing antenna circuitry in devices, making it simple and affordable for OEMs to add remote wireless power to existing Wi-Fi or Bluetooth equipped devices. All that’s apparently needed is a small conversion chip. While not lightning fast, hassle free overnight charging and regular wireless top-ups throughout the day make this a tantalizing prospect.

As you might expect, Cota technology brings with it new charger and receiver parts. The tiny IC receivers can be built into devices, or even batteries, and regularly send out omnidirectional beacon signals to direct power from the charger. Once the Cota charger receives the signal, it returns thousands of targeted low power signals at location of the receiving device. Cota can even power multiple devices at once. If you’re worried about safety, Ossia says that its technology produces a signal no stronger than a mobile phone during a call.

Cota charging chip

The vision is to allow for automatic wireless charging in your home, office, or when grabbing a drink in your local coffee shop. We’re not just talking smartphones here, all manner of low power electronic devices could be powered by the technology.

Ossia will be licensing its design to OEMs and ODMs, who can then build their own transmitters and implement the receiver into their products. Cota sounds like another promising solution for limited mobile battery life, and the small, easy to implement charging chip could be the breakthrough this technology needs.

We’ll have to wait and see if the company can successfully bring its product to market, which is quickly filling up with competing wireless power products. What do you think, intrigued or not?

Qualcomm spokesman says there is no Snapdragon 815

qualcomm_snapdragon_screen_cap

In a very brief exchange between Qualcomm’s Senior Director of Public Relations Jon Carvill and website FudZilla, Carvill delivered a very specific message: “There are no plans for a Snapdragon 815 processor.”

It had been reported around the web, including here at Talk Android, that Qualcomm was working on a cutting-edge successor to the Snapdragon 810, the 810 making its debut in many of the flagship Android OEM devices this 2015. Sadly, though, the 815 was just a myth; however, Qualcomm did shed light on its next processor, the Snapdragon 820, during this past MWC.

The Snapdragon 820 is expected to arrive at the very end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016, just in time for the annual premier of flagship smartphones. It was mentioned that the 815 was using a FinFET transistor, and you’re in luck, the real-deal 820 will be as well. Qualcomm also is designing a custom core to go with the 64-bit SoC dubbed Kyro. The chip will be based on ARMv8, but also designed by Qualcomm.
