Jaguar Land Rover’s new infotainment system gains voice control
When Jaguar Land Rover’s InControl system becomes available throughout the brand’s full lineup in 2016 (currently only 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE and Land Rover’s have it), it’ll be equipped with its latest feature: voice control. The British company has just launched a voice command program called justDrive (developed by Silicon Valley startup CloudCar) that drivers can use for hands-free access of InControl apps (like Spotify, Yelp and Twitter). It can also be used to text or call contacts, or even to send them the user’s location on a map using natural language. Despite being designed for vehicles, justDrive is actually a smartphone app — one simply has to connect that phone to the infotainment system via Bluetooth and USB every time s/he wants to use voice control. After connecting the phone, the dash will show a simple interface with large short-cut buttons (check out CNET’s hands-on experience to understand what we’re saying) to minimize distraction while driving.
The JustDrive app can only be installed on iOS8 for now, but Android users will have access to the voice control program next year — presumably by the time the other InControl apps arrive on all 2015 Jaguar and Land Rover models. But, what about the company’s high-tech windshield display, you ask? Sadly, there’s still no word on when it’ll come out, and we’ll likely be waiting for it for a long, long time. Sigh.

Starting from today, November 18, and running for an unknown period of time, customers will get 15GB of shareable data for the price of 10GB. At 50% more data to go around, it’s a far more competitive value for the $100 monthly fee.

Watch an unmanned helicopter put out fires with help from a drone
Fighting wildfires is sometimes a daunting prospect with manned aircraft; pilots can’t always fly around the clock or cover every patch of land. They won’t have to if Lockheed Martin’s efforts pan out. It recently demonstrated a tweaked version of its unmanned K-MAX helicopter that can work in tandem with a quadrotor drone, Indago, to stamp out fires with relatively little human intervention. As you’ll see in the clip below, Indago serves as a forward scout that marks any hotspots. After that, K-MAX swoops in with a bucket to douse the flames. It fetches more water on its own, too.
People do need to oversee some of the process, but the mostly hands-off approach still lets K-MAX extinguish blazes with the kind of efficiency you don’t always get from regular aircraft — in the demo, it dumped 24,000 pounds of water in an hour. It can also change roles if there’s a need to drop off supplies or rescue survivors. Eventually, Lockheed hopes that this one-two robotic combo will take over from humans when they either aren’t available to fight fires or would face too many risks.

Samsung reducing smartphone lineup by up to 30% next year
Times are getting a little tough over at Samsung. Profit is declining and executives are seeing their pay slashed. The company relies heavily on its mobile division and that is where changes are going to be made. Next year, Samsung confirmed it will be reducing its smartphone lineup by 25% to 35%. Samsung would like to streamline everything in an effort to be cost efficient.
Demand for Galaxy devices is in limbo and Samsung would like to focus on select models. Right now, there are far too many Galaxy devices available in various names, sizes, colors, and markets. It is undeniably messy and confusing for consumers. Focusing on select models will provide proper attention and promotion across the board. It clears confusion for consumers because there will be actual differentiation.
Samsung remains as dominant as ever in markets like the United States. But in markets overseas, competitors are pushing back. Low-cost devices, from hardware manufacturers such as Xiaomi, are giving Samsung a run for its money. Reducing its smartphone lineup will give Samsung’s low-cost devices the push they desperately need to be competitive.

Here’s what a year’s worth of carbon dioxide looks like
It’s easy to talk about carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their effect on our planet, but visualizing them? That’s hard. Thankfully, NASA has stepped up to the plate with a computer model that shows how CO2 travels across Earth’s atmosphere in the space of a year. As you’ll see in the clip below, a lot of gas in the northern hemisphere originates in major pollution centers across Asia, Europe and North America before it drifts across the globe. The abundance of plant life in the spring and summer quickly cuts down on CO2 levels, but the chemical comes roaring back once fall arrives — and the concentrations are higher than NASA would like to see.
The animation isn’t just for show, of course. It’s part of Nature Run, a newly released simulation that lets researchers understand how CO2 builds up. You probably won’t run this software outside of a lab — it took a supercomputer 75 days to produce what you see in the video. However, it should be exceptionally useful for scientists that either want to test satellite concepts or need accurate climate predictions. NASA’s work won’t solve Earth’s problems with greenhouse gases, but it should give you a better sense of how well (or badly) the planet is faring.
