‘Dragon Age: Inquisition’: The Joystiq Review

Dragon Age: Inquisition is an immense fantasy epic, a sprawling adventure across the many landscapes of Thedas, unapologetically mature in its exploration of politics and brazen in its combat. Inquisition is also developer BioWare’s redemption song. It’s everything that a sequel to Dragon Age: Origins should have been, and time will slip by as players enjoy the hundred hours of escapades it delivers.

The end of Inquisition‘s spectacular first act gave me chills. The last time I can recall that feeling is when the Normandy was reintroduced in Mass Effect 2. It’s the chill of being at the beginning of a grand story and anticipation for what’s to come.

SunTrust Bank and BI-LO, Winn-Dixie, Harveys Grocery Stores Add Apple Pay Support

Apple Pay this week continued its retail expansion with the mobile payment service now being adopted by SunTrust bank and Bi-Lo holdings, which manages BI-LO, Harveys, and Winn-Dixie grocery stores. The latter announcement follows our earlier report of Winn-Dixie and BI-LO beginning to go live with Apple Pay support late last week ahead of an official debut, despite not being included on Apple’s “Coming later this year” list.

Customers with a SunTrust credit or debit card will be able to add their card to Apple Pay and use it to make purchases at participating retailers. Headquartered in Atlanta, SunTrust bank has 1,497 bank branches across eleven southern states and Washington, D.C.

At the same time SunTrust has added Apple Pay support for its card holders, supermarket chain Bi-Lo Holdings also added Apple Pay as a payment option during checkout. Customers who shop at the primarily southeastern supermarkets of BI-LO, Winn-Dixie, and Harveys will be able to use their iPhone 6 of 6 Plus to streamline their grocery purchases.

“Customers want a shopping experience that is convenient, easy and secure, which is why we’re so pleased to announce support for Apple Pay,” said Bert DuMars, vice president, digital marketing at Bi-Lo Holdings. “Bi-Lo Holdings is prioritizing digital mobile solutions for our customers, and Apple Pay is an exciting first step in our journey.”

Apple Pay debuted last month alongside iOS 8.1 and has seen strong adoption in the month following release. According to a recent New York Times report, Apple Pay transactions accounted for 50 percent of recent tap-to-pay purchases at McDonald’s and doubled the number of mobile payments processed by Walgreens. Currently, there are almost 40 retailers that officially support Apple Pay, with the number continuing to grow.

Nokia debuts N1 tablet: 64-bit and Android-powered

Nokia N1

Nokia created some waves today when they debuted their newest device at Slush 2014. The device is an Android-powered tablet, named the Nokia N1.

The N1, which looks very similar to an iPad mini in both size and design, is expected to come with an aluminum chassis, 7.9 inch display, a 64-bit Intel Atom processor, stereo speakers, and features Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

The device also features the Nokia Z Launcher. The Z Launcher is Nokia’s intuitive take on how to make the homescreen more simple. A user is able to just write a letter on the homescreen to find what they are looking for and it also adapts to the user, which streamlines the use of applications.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Update For Nvidia Shield Tablet Owners

Well if you just got an Nvidia Shield tablet like I did then good news, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update isn’t far behind. One lucky LTE Shield owner has posted a screenshot of the 2.0 Shield OTA update which shows some very exciting updates coming to all Shield owners. Before I get into it, this was a private OTA that the owner received on Nov 15th but that doesn’t mean it’s any less exciting. According to the screenshot posted by Vincent S, this update brings quite a few goodies for Shield tablet owners. Here are some of the more notable ones; Android 5.0 Lollipop, an updated Nvidia Grid (Nvidia’s on demand gaming service), update for Nvidia Dabbler, support for 4K output and various other tweaks/fixes to keep your Shield tablet running smooth.

Nvidia Shield 5.0 Update

I think after this update my Shield tablet will keep me from even thinking about getting the HTC Nexus 9 anytime soon. In both build quality and just sheer awesomeness I feel the Shield tablet just outperforms the Nexus 9 in more ways then one (queue benchmarks and trolls). But anyway, the official update is slated to arrive today, Nov. 18th, so get your “System Update” finger ready and pray that Nvidia has graced your Shield tablet with Lollipop goodness.

Google Play Edition HTC One M7 and M8 to receive Android 5.0 any day

htconem8prime

If you are a kind of person who only prefers ‘Pure Google’ experience, then I am sure you are familiar with Google Play Edition devices. In past, HTC also released the Google Play Edition of the HTC One M7 and M8; both are their top of the line smartphones. If you are using one of them, then there is a good news for you. Someone asked HTC VP of Product Management on Twitter about when Google Play Edition phones will get Lollipop, and he was nice enough to reply. Have a look:

Well, that sounds like we can expect the update any day now as he made that tweet last week. Are you using HTC One M8 or M7 GPE Edition? Did you receive any update notification yet? Let us know if you did in the comment box below.

Tesco teams up with BT to make its free in-store WiFi faster

Tesco Extra Store

Tesco’s finances might not be holding up too well as of late, but from technological standpoint, the company is certainly ticking all the right boxes. After it debuted the impressive Hudl2 tablet last month, the supermarket giant is now switching its focus to better connecting its customers. Today, Tesco switched live free superfast BT WiFi inside 806 of its stores, replacing the old service powered by O2 and ramping up speeds to 76Mb in available areas. By upgrading its connectivity, the company hopes you’ll download more Clubcard vouchers, obtain product information and look up recipes while doing your weekly shop. More importantly, it could also provide a welcome backup for when you encounter those dreaded mobile signal blackspots in some of its branches.

Take that Microsoft: Nokia announces the Nokia N1, a 7.9-inch Android 5.0 tablet

Nokia N1You had us worried Nokia. We almost thought we’d never see an Android Nokia device (the Nokia X really doesn’t count) and the fact Microsoft is ditching the Nokia name for its Lumia devices going forward didn’t have us feeling particularly confident. Perhaps it’s the scrapping of its brand, or the fact most of its employees were dumped by Microsoft not long after its acquisition, but Nokia has gone out on a limb and announced a new tablet, the Nokia N1, and guess what operating system it’s running – you guessed it, Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Nokia N1While many of Nokia’s final devices under its brand name were plastic and brightly coloured, the N1 is nothing short of sexy and sleek – the exterior of the device is one piece of anodized aluminium that is somehow 6.9mm thick and houses a 7.9-inch display. Inside the device is a 64-bit quadcore Intel Atom 2.4GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage and a 5,300mAh battery. The software running on the N1 looks to be almost stock Android, but will run a thinly themed Z Launcher (remember that? It all makes sense now). I’m actually genuinely psyched to see Nokia release this tablet, but there is a bit of bad news, unless you live in China, Russia or select parts of Europe – the N1 will only be available in those regions starting in February in China, with no plans to launch anywhere else. We can only hope that Nokia eventually changes their mind.

What do you think about the Nokia N1? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Backup and restore your Android apps via Chrome with Helium

Helium Backup

Koushik Dutta is known quite well around the Android community. From the ClockworkMod ROM Manager, to AllCast (which is making it’s way to iOS), and Helium. Formerly known as Carbon, Helium is an application that is designed to help you back up and restore all of your Android apps without needing to root your device. There are some “complicated” steps, such as plugging your device into your computer, but that’s about the extent of it.

Well, Koush has released an accompanying Chrome web app by the same name, Helium, and this is to help those ChromeOS users with backing their apps and information up on the go. Now you will still need to have the Android application installed on your device of choice, in order for Helium to work properly. From there, all you will need to do is plug your device into your computer and things should be working.

Helium will work on any desktop running Chrome, including ChromeOS and Linux. Now you will need to enable ADB before you can use Helium with Linux computers, but after that is finished, everything should be smooth sailing. We must note that if you are planning to update your devices to Lollipop, that Helium MAY not work completely. It’s a little too early to tell, but if you rely on Helium a lot, then it’s probably better to hold off until compatibility can be thoroughly checked.

There are two versions of the Helium app available. There is a lite version, which only allows you to backup and restore to your SD card or to your PC is available for free. The premium version of Helium is $4.99, but has the following features:

  • No ads
  • Automatic Backup schedules
  • Android to Android sync
  • Cloud backup and restore via DropBox, Box, and Google Drive

Personally, when it comes backups, I don’t like to play around with that, and happily paid for the $4.99 premium version. What do you use to backup all of your Android apps and data? Helium could definitely make a run at being the perfect replacement, especially with this new app for Chrome.
