Acer’s 12-inch Switch tablet is five devices in one

Acer Aspire Switch 12 tablet

Thought Acer’s Aspire Switch 10 tablet was a true jack-of-all-trades? It’s already outclassed. The PC maker has officially revealed the Aspire Switch 12, a 12.5-inch sibling that’s a little more flexible. On top of the tablet, laptop, display (screen facing out) and tent (upside-down) modes from before, the new Windows slate adds a fifth desktop mode where the keyboard is detached. Yes, if you don’t mind the small screen and keyboard, this latest Switch can do its best impression of an all-in-one.

Whether or not you need that shapeshifting ability, you’re definitely getting more under the hood. The larger tablet packs a much sharper 1080p screen, a speedier Core M processor and either 60GB or 120GB of solid-state storage; despite the more demanding components, you should still get about eight hours of battery life. You’ll also get micro-HDMI video output and micro-USB 3.0 for peripherals. The Switch 12 is a tangible upgrade, then, although you’ll have to be patient to get your hands on it. Acer only ships the 12-incher to North America in early 2015, and it hasn’t divulged pricing so far.

Nest’s smart thermostat now shows much more info at a glance

Quick View on Nest's Learning Thermostat

For all of the things Nest’s smart thermostat has learned to do, its interface hasn’t made a lot of progress; you frequently have to dig to see more than just the basics. You’ll have a much easier time of it after today, though. Nest is now rolling out a version 4.3 update that includes Quick View, a reworked interface that gives you more info at a glance. Push in the ring and you can quickly check both the outdoor temperature and humidity before you leave home — handy if you’re unsure about bringing your jacket. Spinning the ring, meanwhile, shows you a summary of everything associated with a given category. You can see the next scheduled temperature change, fan settings and other nice-to-know facts without wading into the menus.

There are some under-the-hood updates, too. A better auto-scheduler should be considerably faster at adapting to sudden changes, such as a new work shift; Nest reckons that you could save another 6 percent on your cooling and heating bills. You can also use a new System Test to spot any problems, whether you want to check a fresh thermostat installation or want to show a mechanic what’s wrong. The upgrade should hit your device within about a week, so you won’t have to wait long for a simpler (or at least, less headache-inducing) way to control your home’s climate.

TalkTalk’s YouView boxes are getting Netflix access too

BT said last week its TV customers would soon be able to access Netflix on their YouView set-top boxes. The news confirmed an earlier rumour that also named TalkTalk, which uses YouView hardware for its TV offering, as a potential Netflix partner. We suspected it was only a matter of time before TalkTalk made its own announcement, and today, it’s done just that. Netflix will indeed be available through its YouView boxes, too, and like the BT partnership, TalkTalk customers can simply add a subscription to the video streaming service onto the monthly bill they already receive. TalkTalk may’ve been beaten to press, but it’s starting to roll Netflix out to boxes today, whereas BT’s still working out the finer details. At this point, it might be time for YouView owners that’ve purchased a box outside of a TalkTalk or BT package to start complaining about being left out. We would’ve expected some word from them by now, but YouView is putting on an event later today, so we’ll get our hats seasoned just in case they become tonight’s dinner.

Steve Jobs memorial dismantled in Russia because of Tim Cook’s sexuality

After Steve Jobs died in 2011, a Russian holding company called the West European Financial Union (or ZEFS, in Russian) erected a big, iPhone-shaped memorial statue that told visitors about Jobs’ life outside a St. Petersburg college. An innocuous tribute, no? Nothing about the memorial itself was intrinsically troubling, but it’s been recently dismantled all the same because of two reasons. First, ZEFS is looking at the act as a way of condemning the company for allegedly spying on users across the globe and “informing US security services about them.” The second reason, however, sits on the fence between “mind-boggling” and “patently offensive.” In accordance with a controversial law meant to curb gay “propaganda,” ZEFS took down the statue “to abide to the Russian federal law protecting children from information promoting denial of traditional family values.”

Seriously.

These people are concerned that the statue — which specifically paid tribute to a past, dead Apple CEO and not the one who publicly and bravely acknowledged his sexuality in a Bloomberg Businessweek piece last week — could erode the hearty Russian familial structure. Won’t someone please think of the children? Oh wait, the Russian government has, and that’s why its been trying to limit the “propaganda of homosexuality and other sexual perversions” minors should have access to. The location of the statue didn’t help matters much, either — its proximity to a school sparked concerns that it could lead bright youngsters passing by down a path of sin, because apparently laying your eyes on a statue is all it takes to completely rewrite your sexual preferences. Some future we live in, huh?

Disney Movies Anywhere service comes to Android with a link to Google Play

After years of development Disney unveiled its digital movie service on iOS earlier this year and today it’s coming to Android too. When it launched, Disney Movies Anywhere had an unprecedented deep link to iTunes, and now on Android it’s sharing a similar tie with Google Play. For users it’s apparently as seamless as can be — as long as they have a Disney account, any movies they unlock will be viewable on either family of devices (or the DMA website). The agreement covers access to around 400 Disney, Pixar and Marvel movies, and to make the sign-up worth your while, Disney is throwing in a free copy of Wreck-it Ralph for anyone that signs up and links an account.

Going cross-platform makes Disney’s KeyChest-based system much more appealing — and conveniently timed for the launch of Nexus Player / Android TV — but we’re still waiting to see if a tie-up with the likes of Amazon or Ultraviolet can fulfill the promise of unlocking a single copy in one store or with a Blu-ray / DVD purchase, and then being able to watch it anywhere, on any device. The Android app isn’t live yet, but you can check out a demo video for now (embedded after the break).

Gameloft Releases Ten Games for Nexus Player

GameloftPopular mobile gaming publisher Gameloft has released ten classic titles for Google’s Android TV Nexus Player.

The new games are Despicable Me: Minion Rush, Asphalt 8: Airborne, Modern Combat 4, Zero Hour, Modern Combat 5: Blackout, GT Racing 2: The Real Car Experience, Dungeon Hunter 4, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Wonder Zoo, Ice Age Village, and World at Arms.

These games are well-loved by the community, and as someone who has played a few of them, I can say that Gameloft and Google picked a great bunch of titles to get the ball rolling. From racing to fighting to strategy, the ten games should be varied enough to satisfy the initial desire to game with Google’s new system.

Baudouin Corman, VP of Publishing at Gameloft said about the games, Were committed to delivering amazing game experiences to our millions of players on promising new platforms. With cross platform gameplay for several Gameloft titles, players will be able to enjoy their favorite games on the big screen, phone, and tablet.

What do you think about these games? Is there a favorite of yours that’s missing? Is one of the games just terrible and doesn’t belong on this list? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think!
