Recommended Reading: Hollywood’s love affair with Christopher Nolan

Recommended Reading highlights the best long-form writing on technology and more in print and on the web. Some weeks, you’ll also find short reviews of books that we think are worth your time. We hope you enjoy the read.

Why Hollywood Loves ‘Interstellar’ Director Christopher Nolan
by Ben Fritz,
The Wall Street Journal

Folks in Hollywood seem to trust director Christopher Nolan to crank out films that’ll grab box office bucks. His latest effort, Interstellar, hits movie theaters next week, and it cost a whopping $165 million to make. According to The Wall Street Journal‘s Ben Fritz, the last non-franchise film to shell out that much was Nolan’s 2010 film Inception. The filmmaker seems to get whatever he needs to craft his movies, with the trust that he’ll keep his streak of success going.

The Plan to Reinvent Call of Duty
by Matt Leone, Polygon

In case you haven’t yet seen the trailers, this year’s installment of Call of Duty looks to switch things up a bit by placing the narrative 50 years in the future, complete with high-tech war gadgets. Heck, it even has Kevin Spacey.

Tinder, the Fast-Growing Dating App, Taps an Age-Old Truth
by Nick Bilton, The New York Times

We reported some of Tinder’s user stats earlier this week, but those numbers are included in a much larger report detailing just how the app is making a big splash in the online dating game.

The NBA Fan’s Guide to Talking Trash During Pickup Basketball
by Shea Serrano, Grantland

Yeah, I know… this piece has virtually nothing to do with tech. However, it’s loaded with awesome. Plus, you should really never call a foul. Not ever. There are some acceptable comments though, and this guide to the court at your local gym is quite good.

by Joe Levy, Billboard

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor discusses Gone Girl, the future of the band and briefly hints at what he’s up to with Apple. Reznor also offers some comments on the unique routes that both U2 and Beyoncé took in releasing their most recent albums.

Download and Install Gmail 5.0 APK

Gmail-5.0-apk

Google have been busy updating their apps recently to reflect its gorgeous new material design that Lollipop is going to bring but good old Gmail has been last in turn to get its refresh, until now that is.

The official Gmail 5.0 APK has just been released and is doesn’t disappoint. Gmail’s new design is definitely fitting in with the whole material design thing Google has going on and mirrors the beautiful layout we are seeing in Google’s other new app that is “Inbox“.

Along with the facelift there are many other cool features that have been thrown into Gmail.5.0 but one of the biggest changes, and one that has been no secret, is support for exchange/corporate email and other personal accounts like Yahoo and Outlook.com.

So what ya waiting for, go grab it and install it then let us know what other neat changes you find or like.

The official Gmail 5.0 APK can be downloaded by clicking here.

Google Play Newsstand version 3.3.1 also rears its updated face [APK Download]

Google Play Newsstand version 3.3.1

Left – version 3.3 (old), right – version 3.3.1 (new)

We’ve already seen a Google Play Store and Gmail app update today, and now there’s an updated Google Play Newsstand to throw in the mix too. Google Play Newsstand version 3.3.1 has appeared, and although it has only a small increment over version 3.3 which introduced the Material Design makeover, it has increased its size from 7.79MB to 8.23MB. Nothing too serious, but there’s probably a few changes you might notice. As you can see above, the slide out menu has had a few changes, namely adding a spot of colour the the currently selected sub-menu as well as adding a toggle to switch between viewing only content that has been downloaded to your device.

The other notable change that we noticed is that the “Getting Started” sections in each tab have been compacted so that it doesn’t take up the whole screen as it used to. Minor stuff, but probably makes the experience just that little bit smoother, or more intuitive. It’s alleged that an issue with the app reported on Android Lollipop has been resolved, but we don’t have a device to verify this. If you’re wanting to download Google Play Newsstand version 3.3.1 because you have a hankering for those Google apps as soon as they go live, we have the APK available to download below:

Researchers find a way to listen in on vehicular vibrations

Night traffic speeds through the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea.

The steady flow of vehicles is noisy enough as it is, but it also gives off a type of noise the human ear can’t hear: seismic noise, or the vibration of the ground. Thus, vibrations given off by cars, trucks, trains, and airplanes on the runway among other modes of transportation haven’t really been studied in depth — until now. A team of researchers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography have recently found a way to “hear” those vibrations using 5,300 geophones, screwdriver-like devices used to record ground movements. They placed a geophone every 300 feet in Long Beach for their study and soon realized that thanks to the devices, they could count airplanes and measure their acceleration on the runway and even detect larger vehicles like trucks on a highway. In the future, the same method could be used to monitor traffic, which could then lead to better roads and more road signals where they’re most needed.

AT&T and Verizon are upping bandwidth on select data plans

These days we could all use a little more mobile bandwidth, and the folks at AT&T and Verizon are giving us some. Let’s break it down, shall we? If you’re on an AT&T single-line plan or have two to three devices, the company is now offering 3GB of data as opposed to the prior 2GB for $40 per month. And now, the carrier’s $70 tier will net you 6GB of bandwidth instead of 4GB. This new allocation starts November 2nd, and as Gigaom points out, the double-data promo for higher-tier plans runs until November 15th. Verizon has a sorta similar deal going, but it’s for plans that have higher bandwidth to start. Big Red is bumping its $80 per-month customers from 6GB to 10GB and the previous 10GB, $100 per-month tier is getting a bump to 15GB of data. This is apparently a limited-time offer, but, hey, at least it extends to both new and existing customers starting this Saturday.

Gmail 5.0 for Android is finally out with that Material Design look [APK Download]

Gmail 5.0 for AndroidWe’ve already seen Google give the lowdown on the incoming Material Design update to Gmail, officially known as Gmail 5.0 for Android, and now it’s available to us all. As expected, it gives the Gmail app a whole new UI, with Material Design aspects of course, and as it was reported before, the app is also able to add email accounts from Yahoo and Outlook as well. On first open, the app will ask if you want to add additional email accounts and you get all the familiar options of enabling/disabling notifications and so forth.

Gmail 5.0 for Android Gmail 5.0 for Android It was also rumoured that the new Gmail would be able to add Exchange email accounts, essentially taking over all duties of the stock Email app, but it doesn’t look like that’s the case yet – or at least, I can’t work out how to do it. The full list of changes, as per the Play Store, is as follows:

Full version number: 5.0 (1520254)

 • Full Material Design makeover
 • Tons of UI changes
 • Lots more to discover.
 • New Home Screen Icon (will be updating it on here shortly)

Presumably the update is rolling out to everyone from today, but if you need to get your Gmail 5.0 fix now, we have the APK available for download down below:

RE Camera in orange gets delayed, HTC offers 10% discount

HTC_RE_Camera_Launch_Event_02_TA

Launching a new product in a relatively new category can be tough, but HTC is not shying away from doing so. This company’s RE Camera will be on the market in time for the holiday season. And to satisfy the tastes of everyone, the RE Camera comes in orange, white, and navy blue (the latter of which is exclusive to Best Buy). Pre-orders have been open since the device was announced in October. Shipments, though, have yet to start.

The RE Camera scheduled for a November 15 arrival, but people going for the orange color will have a longer wait. The demand is so high for the orange RE Camera that HTC has been forced to delay its release. HTC is sending out emails to customers offering multiple options to make the situation a bit better.

So what can you do? Switch to the white color and get a 10% discount. Actually, you can stick with the orange color and still receive a 10% discount. Or you can go ahead and wait for your orange to arrive by purchasing the white and get 10% off of both RE Camera devices ordered.
