Google Fit app gets exposed prior to official launch

google_fit_icon

The next version of Android will include the brand new Google Fit application. Not much of the app has been seen; however, Android Police was able to take it for a spin through a leaked Nexus 6 dump. Even though nothing is at this point, the current state of the Google Fit app shows things are pretty smooth with Material Design being present. The design makes Google Fit unique because otherwise it just acts as any other fitness tracking app would.

The GIF above shows the app’s refresh animation on the main screen. Pull down and your statistics will update accordingly. Below that, users can view charts breaking down activities based on time and other measurements.

There is a manual input option for when the device running Google Fit is unable to communicate. The user just has to put the time, activity, and duration. Google Fit asks users to compose their profile. This includes gender, height, weight, and goals.

Lionsgate and Tribeca are launching a video-streaming service

There’s no doubt that video on demand is about to go through its own gold rush era. From giant TV networks like CBS to wireless providers such as Rogers, it looks as if everyone wants to join the fun before it’s too late. Taking note of this, film studio Lionsgate and Tribeca Enterprises, the media company behind the Tribeca Film Festival, announced today they are teaming up on a new, subscription-based video-streaming platform. The service will be known as Tribeca Short List and is slated to launch sometime during the first half of 2015. You can expect a “prestigious selection” of movie content from Lionsgate, which will be curated by Tribeca with help from “leading voices in contemporary culture.”

As of right now, no pricing details have been released. That said, a source familiar with the upcoming service does tell me that Tribeca Short List will rely heavily on providing highly curated films, and that the focus is going to be on quality rather than quantity. What’s more, I’m told there will be a section on each movie explaining in detail why it was selected as part of the feed. On paper, it sounds like an interesting idea — now we just have to wait and see if the end product is compelling enough for people to buy in.

Apple’s iPhone business soars while the iPad languishes

Apple just dropped its 4th quarter earnings a few moments ago, revealing that the folks in Cupertino raked in $42.1 billion in revenue and $8.5 billion in pure profit — more than enough to take care what it might owe in back taxes. More interestingly, the company moved a total of 39.3 million iPhones over the past three months, along with 12.3 million iPads and 5.5 million Macs. Word that Apple’s mobile business had a bang-up three months is hardly a shock — a record-breaking 10 million iPhone 6/6 Pluses were sold over its first weekend, which CEO Tim Cook said beat all previous milestones “by a large margin”. Here’s the thing though: iPad sales didn’t just dip from last quarter, they dipped year-over-year, too. In fact, the number of iPads Apple has moved this time around was the lowest since the company started reporting tablet sales separately in 2012.

Now, this by itself isn’t necessarily a shock either. Bigger ticket products like the iPad are things that people tend to hold onto for longer, and we’ve only just seen a new batch of iPads (well, one new iPad and one very mildly tweaked one) make their debut. Stalwarts will say just give it some time, the iPad’ll pick up steam again, and it very well may do so — there’s an iPad at nearly every notable price point now. With the launch of a device like the iPhone 6 Plus, though, a device that for many people will ably straddle the line between the iPhone and the iPad Mini, it’ll be interesting to see if the iPad manages to regain it’s former sales glory. The fact that the iPad Mini wasn’t barely touched this year won’t help matters — it got all of what, five sentences dedicated to it during the iPad Air 2’s grand unveiling? Sure, part of that is almost certainly due to the cost and complexity of shrinking components and refining design, but the continued (some would say overwhelming) demand for Apple’s bigger iPhones may wind up eating away at the iPad’s relevance in some very curious ways.

(Brief parting aside: If you want some really interesting numbers, next quarter will factor in the new iPhones’ momentum in China, and the one after that will chronicle Apple’s typical holiday explosion. We’re expecting a doozy.)

Update: Apple’s talking iPad on its earnings call right now — it says this quarter’s sales were consistent with its expectations, and apparently did really well in Japan. The iPad also remains the United States’ education tablet of choice. Later, during the Q&A session, Tim Cook said Apple looks at this iPad dip as a “speedbump and not a huge thing” and went on to note that he personally sees a “great future” for the company’s tablets.

AT&T announces Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 for October 24th

Hey look! Another Samsung device! The less lustrous Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 that launched last summer seems to have been successful enough for Samsung to put in some leg work on creating a follow-up, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 AT&T

The 2014 Mega 2 appears to take some design elements from the Galaxy Note line with that stitched back plate while keeping some of the original Galaxy Mega. As for specs, AT&T was pretty hush hush on the subject. More so pointing out that it has a 8MP camera with 4X digital zoom and a 2,800 mAh battery pushing a quad-core processor on a 6-inch “high-definition” screen. The video below shows some the functions off, like one-handed mode, Dual-Instance (multi-wuindow), interruption free experience and private mode to secure files separately from the device.

Cruising around the web the consensus is stating the screen will be 720p, or 1280 x 720. The processor for the stateside version of this is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 clocked at 1.2GHz and bringing 1.5GB of RAM. It will come with 16GB on-board storage and the usual SD card slot option. While not specifically confirmed from AT&T, it is pretty safe to assume those are correct.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 will be available via AT&T on October 24th. It will retail for $149.99 on a new two-year contract or $474.99 without a contract. That puts the device at $19.80 a month on Next 18 and $23.75 a month on Next 12.

Good-bye Nexus 7; Dedicate Google Play Edition device section also removed

Looks like the device section of the Play Store is getting reworked a little bit. Cruising through the main page you will no longer see a separate section for the Google Play Edition devices (GPE). Instead they have been grouped together under a Phones & Tablets listing.

Google Play Store Phones and Tablets

You can see the HTC One and Moto G are still present and accounted for. However, the Nexus 7 seems to have been retired leaving your only purchasable tablet from Google through the Play Store as the new HTC Nexus 9. I am not so sure it was time for it to go though. The Nexus 5 is still holding in there, although we aren’t sure for how much longer. It would be nice to have them both there for a few more month. Wish Google would give a device retirement heads up or something. It does appear that the Wi-Fi Nexus 7 landing page is still live, but purchasing is closed off.

Those looking to get a Nexus 7 will have to resort to other methods like Amazon where you can get the 16GB for $198.99 or the 32 GB for $247.58 or over at BestBuy.

Play Store has fresh Moto 360 stock for your ordering pleasure

The Moto 360 flew off the digital shelves of the Play Store quite quickly. You still could order it through Motorola or pick one up at BestBuy or other locations, but it isn’t the same as getting it from Google. Luckily it would appear that sometime over the weekend, or today, a new batch of stock has arrived and is available for order.

Currently the Black Leather and the Stone Leather are the only two strap color options available. The Gray Leather says it is out of stock. Word has it that the Gray Leather was discontinued and was to be replaced by the Stone Leather. Which is sad, I really liked the gray one. Any-who, she is back in the Play Store if that is and was your preferred ordering method. Price still holds at $249 with either of the color options shipping out in 1 – 2 business days.

Nexus Player now available on the Play Store for $99

Google_Nexus_Player_02

Following a false start, Google’s Nexus Player finally passed through the FCC yesterday and is now available to order on the Play Store for $99.

Google states that the device will start shipping within the next three-to-four weeks, which, according to our calendar, should be sometime around the second week in November.

How to make sure your Android phone or tablet is backed up on Google’s servers

Back_up_my_data_TA

Android phones and tablets have had the “Back up my data” option for some time now, but it’s actually a lot more useful now that Android 5.0 Lollipop is upon us.

Upon setting up a new device with Lollipop, you are given the opportunity to install apps from an older device. You can do it with Tap & Go, which uses NFC to pair the older device with the newer one, but you won’t have a choice as to which apps you want to install on the new device. It’s all or nothing. The second option allows you to select from one of your existing devices, and you can hand pick the apps you want to be restored. The caveat is that the older device needs to be set to back up to Google Servers, which is the “Back up my data” option.

This setting is one of the first options that is seen during the initial setup process for any Android device prior to Lollipop. You might have unchecked it, and if that’s the case, you want to make sure it’s turned on. This will also help in the event you misplace your device or you had to perform a factory reset. In either of these events, you won’t be able to use the Tap & Go feature.

To turn it on, it’s quite simple. Every Android phone is different, but you need to head into your Settings, and find Backup & Reset. It’s under the main settings screen for Nexus, Google Play Edition, Motorola, LG, and HTC devices. For Samsung devices, it’s under Settings, but you have to go to the General tab. Once you find, Backup & Reset, just tap it and you will then see the option, Back up my data. Just make sure it’s either checked or switched to the On position.

Galaxy_Note_4_Screenshot_Back_up_my_data_03

Now under Back up my data, it says, “Back up my app data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to Google servers.” I just want to point out that “app data” isn’t meant in the literal sense. It just means your actual apps, and not the data that is in them. So no game progress or any settings or databases saved in those apps.

I hope this helped you out. If I missed something please let us know in the comments.
