San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Fined $10k for Defying No Beats Headphones Rule
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been fined $10,000 for wearing Apple’s Beats by Dre headphones following a ban on the brand after the NFL signed an exclusive deal with Bose.
Kaepernick opted to wear bright pink Beats by Dre headphones following last Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, in order to “pay homage to Breast Cancer Awareness.” Kaepernick declined to say whether Beats paid his fine, saying “I’m going to let that be unanswered.”
Kaepernick, along with a number of other high-profile NFL players, has an endorsement deal with Beats. Last year, he starred in a popular Beats ad that depicted him tuning out the negative comments and boos of opposing fans by wearing Beats noise-canceling headphones.
Bose and the NFL signed a sponsorship agreement before the season began, but last week the NFL decided to ban players from wearing Beats headphones in front of television cameras to support its sponsor. Players are not allowed to wear them when conducting interviews during training camp, during practice sessions, or on game day, from before the event until 90 minutes after play has ended.
This is the second time Beats headphones have been banned from major sporting events. Earlier this year, World Cup headphone sponsor Sony banned soccer players from wearing Beats headphones within stadiums, and during the London Olympics, the International Olympic Committee ended up banning Beats headphones after a guerrilla marketing campaign because the company was not an official sponsor.

Apple Releases Third OS X Yosemite Golden Master Candidate to Developers
Apple today released a third golden master candidate of OS X Yosemite to developers, just two days after releasing the second candidate golden master and the fifth public beta. The first golden master candidate was seeded to developers on September 30.
The latest Yosemite update can be downloaded from the Mac App Store and through Apple’s Mac Developer Center.
OS X Yosemite brings a flatter, more modern look to OS X, with an emphasis on translucency and redesigned dock, windows, and more. It also includes a multitude of new features, such as improved integration with iOS 8 through Continuity, a new “Today” view in Notification Center that offers integration with third-party apps, a retooled Spotlight search with new data sources, and several new features for apps like Mail, Safari, and Messages.
Over the course of the beta testing period, each Developer Preview has added new features and refined the look and performance of OS X Yosemite, although changes have become less obvious in more recent builds as Apple begins finalizing Yosemite ahead of its public release, which is expected in late October.
The current build, like the previous golden master candidate, may not be the final version of OS X Yosemite, depending on the outcome of final testing. Last year, Apple seeded multiple golden master versions of OS X Mavericks, with the final version coming a couple of days ahead of the software’s public release.

Apple Watch to be Featured in November Issue of Vogue China
Earlier this month, Chinese model Liu Wen hinted that she might be involved in a fashion-oriented advertising campaign for the Apple Watch. As it turns out, Liu Wen will be featured in Vogue China’s November issue, wearing the Apple Watch on the cover of the magazine.
Wen appears to be wearing the 18-karat yellow gold Edition Apple Watch, which features a red Modern Buckle Band. She’s also featured wearing other Apple Watch models on a spread inside the magazine.
In an interview with The Business of Fashion, Vogue China editor-in-chief Angelica Cheung has revealed the details behind the partnership between Vogue and Apple that led to the device being featured on the popular magazine’s cover. According to Cheung, she met with Apple CEO Tim Cook and design head Jony Ive ahead of the device’s September 9 unveiling.
Cheung says that the duo walked her through the development of the Apple Watch, which left her “impressed by their thoughts and passion for the project.” Cheung said that she thought the watches “combined technology, style, and functionality and were very modern,” making them a good fit for Vogue China.
Cheung believes that Cook and Ive opted to give the Apple Watch its editiorial debut in Vogue China due to China’s willingness to embrace new technology.
“Chinese people are actually very digitally minded and we embrace new technology and digital products more easily than perhaps people elsewhere,” said Ms Cheung. “We are an ancient country but at the same time a very young country when it comes to fashion and new products. We love to embrace everything that is new, modern and positive,” she added. “All these convince us that the intersection of fashion and technology is a natural progression, not something alien.”
Apple’s choice to show off the Apple Watch in Vogue China speaks to how important the country has become to the company. China marks an opportunity for significant growth for Apple and earlier this year, China’s largest cell phone carrier, China Mobile, began offering the iPhone in what Tim Cook called a watershed moment. Cook visited China several times in 2013, and Apple has opened several new retail stores in the country in 2014, including locations in Wuxi, Chongqing, and Beijing.
The Apple Watch marks Apple’s first foray into the fashion world, and the company has been working to position it as a high-fashion accessory. In addition to getting its editorial debut in Vogue China, the Apple Watch saw its retail debut at French luxury boutique Colette in late September.
Apple is likely to hold additional fashion-oriented events as the Apple Watch’s early 2015 debut date approaches, aiming to promote the device as much as possible. Apple may also take a variety of approaches in its Apple Watch advertising, to reach a wide range of potential customers. June rumors suggested the Apple Watch was also being tested with multiple professional athletes that could also take part in future advertisements.
The Apple Watch is expected to launch in early 2015 and the device will be available in a wide range of materials and at several different price points. On the lower end, the Sport version of the device will retail for $349, and rumors have suggested the higher-end solid gold Edition models could sell for thousands of dollars.

Google Now gets a conversational search upgrade, learns to use OpenTable
Nothing makes voice-recognition software shine more than good conversational algorithms — and the natural-search function in Google Now just got a minor upgrade. Not only can use your hotel confirmation to find nearby restaurants, but also now you can casually ask it to show you the restaurant’s menu or book a reservation via OpenTable. You’ll still have to do a little work to complete the reservation, however (Google only gets the booking started), and it’s still not perfect: If a given restaurant doesn’t support OpenTable or doesn’t have a menu online, the process kind of falls apart. Still, it’s a nice upgrade, assuming you’ve already come to terms with the fact that Google’s algorithms are skimming your email.

WSJ: 5.9-inch Nexus 6 “Shamu” will launch this month
If there was even any shred of doubt that Google was going to release a 5.9-inch beast of a Nexus device, I’m pretty sure you can now put it to rest. According to the Wall Street Journal and its three anonymous sources, Google is indeed going to release a Motorola manufactured 5.9-inch phablet, referred to by names like Nexus 6, Nexus X or Shamu, and could do so as soon as this month. Previous rumours have placed the release in early November but this latest news gives us more confidence that we might just be seeing the device before the end of the month.
WSJ also mentions that Google intends to release an operating system, what we know as Android L, at the same time as the Nexus 6, and that the phablet device is trying to capitalize on the 24% of the market that now uses phablets, though we’re a little dubious as to where that statistic came from. Still, for those who are phablet-inclined, the Nexus 6 represents an opportunity to jump on the stock Android train with Google’s most powerful smartphone yet with a Snapdragon 805 and 3GB under the hood.
What do you think about seeing the Nexus 6 by the end of October? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

NASA video outlines plan for Orion’s first unmanned spaceflight
After years of development and launch delays, NASA’s Orion spacecraft is almost ready for its first unmanned flight, and the space agency just outlined the capsule’s flight path. The unmanned launch will take place in December, and will serve as a test run of the capsule’s radiation protection, heat shield and parachute system. NASA will use a Delta IV heavy rocket to launch the craft 100 miles above the Earth’s surface where, after completing its first orbit, upper stage rockets will take it 3,600 miles out into space — just far enough to pass through the Van Allen radiation belt.
We’ve sent astronauts and countless pieces of hardware through the Van Allen belt before, but it’s still a high radiation area that needs to be tested before we start running manned missions. NASA says the capsule has been outfitted with sensors to take new readings on the belt and ensure that it doesn’t interfere with any of the capsule’s onboard electronics. The Orion will pass through the belt twice and then return to Earth to make a final decent. This will put the craft’s heat-shield — the largest ever built — to the test and put the already-tested parachute system through its paces once again. Want a break down of the entire flight plan? Check out the video below.

Sony cuts the price of its ‘Digital Paper’ and now it’s only $1,000
If the only thing keeping you from Sony’s electronic paper replacement was the price, you’re in luck. According to The eBook Reader, these days anyone can grab the flexible 13.3-inch E Ink display from Sony’s online store (previously it was restricted to legal or banking professionals), and the price just recently fell $100. We’re still not sure if dropping under the $1,000 barrier is enough to make reading PDFs and signing A4-sized documents is enough to make it worthwhile, but there are probably some folks who will find a use. Sure it doesn’t do color, but the display is high res (1,200 x 1,600) and it has a three week battery life. Who needs two Xbox Ones anyway?

NFL fines 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick for wearing Beats over Bose
Less than a week after the NFL confirmed that players would no longer be allowed to wear Beats headphones during interviews, the league is already handing out fines for noncompliance. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was fined $10,000 for opting to wear pink pair of Dr. Dre’s wares over the NFL-approved Bose cans for his post-game press conference last week. After the Bose deal to become the official headphone and headset of the NFL this spring, the league confirmed last weekend that players couldn’t wear another brand during interviews — including those before, during and up to 90-minutes after a game. As we mentioned before, Beats was also banned on match days and at media events at the World Cup this summer, too. If you’ll recall, Kaepernick was one of the main players in Beats’ “Hear What You Want” commercials during last year’s NFL season. It’s also worth mentioning that the NFL makes a big push for players to wear pink gear in support of breast cancer awareness during the month of October every year.
