New Poodle Bug Revealed by Researchers

Vicious PoodleLook out! Three Google researchers published a bug today, causing much of the internet to panic over securing systems. The bug is called POODLE, for “Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption.” Poodle bypasses SSL protections, much like last year’s dreadful HeartBleed, causing some to call it “PoodleBleed.”

Data in transit between a website and a user is protected by SSL, usually seen in the url as a green padlock. However, if compromised, a hacker can intercept data in transit, opening the door to all kinds of technical tomfoolery. Fortunately, POODLE targets SSL 3.0, which is 15 years old, but a few systems still use it. If a system uses 3.0, it seems disaster can be averted by upgrading—and quickly!

Google Glass can now display Explorers’ phone notifications (video)

Google Glass Explorers will soon be able to see all their phone’s notifications right on the eyewear’s screen. It’s the same feature that comes with Android Wear, which allows the platform to forward notifications to smartwatches, so users won’t have to take out their phones unless it’s for something truly important. Explorers have to wait for the latest MyGlass software to arrive sometime later today to get a glimpse of new texts, Facebook comments and Instagram follows (among many others), right on the eyepiece. And, once they’ve installed the update, they’ll need to activate Notification Sync in their phone’s settings page. There are a few pages to go through during the process, but nothing overly complicated, so long as they follow the video after the break.

ASUS’ PadFone X mini phone-and-tablet hybrid reaches AT&T

ASUS PadFone X mini for AT&T

If you liked ASUS’ PadFone X but weren’t willing to pay that much for the combination of an Android smartphone with a tablet shell, AT&T might soon have what you’re looking for. The carrier is bringing the PadFone X mini to the US on October 24th, when it will sell for $200 to GoPhone’s prepaid customers. There’s a lot of hardware here for the money, although it won’t surprise you to hear that ASUS makes sacrifices to give you two devices for the price of one. The smartphone half is a bit better than the regular PadFone mini thanks to its larger 4.5-inch screen, but you’re still looking at a dual-core Atom processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front shooter. You’re also docking into a 7-inch tablet which houses little more than a front camera and an extra battery, so don’t expect a night-and-day difference when you use the bigger screen. With that said, the PadFone X mini beats getting a budget smartphone by itself — give it a look if you’d rather not buy a separate tablet.

Italy’s first electric supercar comes from a brand you’ve never heard of

Tecnicar Lavinia

Italian supercar makers are willing to embrace hybrids, but they’re reluctant to develop pure electric cars — not surprising when they’re virtually defined by their sweet-sounding gas engines. They may have to reconsider that strategy pretty soon. Tecnicar, a startup whose main claim to fame is a city car, has revealed plans to build the country’s first super-fast EV, the Lavinia SE. The finished vehicle is expected to produce the equivalent of 800HP, or enough to take it to 62MPH in 3.5 seconds. That’s just behind a Ferrari 458 Italia, folks. It should also be nimble thanks to both a lightweight carbon fiber body and high-performance ceramic brakes, and the 186-mile range will be enough for a blast through the countryside, if not much more.

As you might gather by looking at the 3D rendering shown here, the main catch is that the Lavinia SE isn’t yet a practical reality. Tecnicar is currently building its first prototype in Sicily, and you won’t see it in the metal until a car show in April. There’s no release date or price, either, although it’s safe to presume that this green machine will cost you a six-digit sum if and when it arrives.

Bono apologizes for that U2 download you didn’t ask for

Apple's U2 commercial playing on an iPhone 6

Apple and U2 may have touted that Songs of Innocence iTunes giveaway as a breakthrough music deal, but not everyone appreciated seeing an album forced into their collection. And apparently, front man Bono is now well aware of this — he just used a fan Q&A on Facebook to offer an apology of sorts. He’s sorry that U2 got “carried away” with its idea, and claims that the band was worried that years of work “might’nt be heard” if it had a typical launch.

Bono’s contrite response seems sincere, and you might appreciate it if you felt that Apple and U2 were too presumptuous about your interest in receiving free arena-friendly rock. Having said this, the apology rings a bit hollow. The damage has been done, and the band isn’t about to reverse a deal that reportedly earned it about $100 million. But hey, look at it this way — at least U2 is unlikely to repeat the ploy and have your friends once more questioning your taste in music.

Initial iPad Air 2 Supplies May Be Limited, 27-Inch Retina Display iMac Launching by End of 2014

Just about a day before Apple’s October 16 media event, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a new report, saying that he expects supplies of iPad Air 2s to be constrained. His report also suggests that the 27-inch Retina Display iMac to begin shipments before the end of the year and reiterates that the new iPad Minis won’t be a significant upgrade.

apple_oct_2014_invite_large

Of the new products, we think the market will be more interested in iPad Air 2. However, as the poor yield rate of anti-reflective coating cover lens has delayed mass production, we estimate 2014 shipments of iPad Air 2 of 7- 9mn units, lower than the 12mn units of the then-new iPad Air shipments in 2013. We thus expect iPad Air 2 to contribute less to the supply chain than iPad Air did last year. We also don’t expect the event to boost supply chain shares much.

Kuo goes on to once again suggest that a significant update to the iPad Mini isn’t likely due to the iPad Air’s larger “contribution to Apple’s sales and earnings” and that iPad Mini is seeing limited development resources because Apple is working on a brand-new 12.9-inch iPad.

The 27-inch Retina Display iMac is likely to begin shipments before the end of 2014, with the 21-inch Retina Display arriving sometime in the second half of 2015. The delay between the two models, Kuo suggests, is because of how difficult it is to develop two different sized high resolution panels at the same time.

Finally, Kuo corroborates reports that new MacBook models will not make an appearance at the October 16 event as Apple is waiting on Intel’s Broadwell chips before significantly upgrading their laptop line. This includes the rumored 12-inch MacBook Air.

Apple is holding its press event this Thursday, October 16 at 10:00 AM PT on its Cupertino campus. Besides new iPads and iMacs, Apple is also expected to announce the public launch date for OS X Yosemite. MacRumors will provide live coverage from the event.

Motorola Nexus 6 makes early appearance on AT&T’s site with a $49.99 contract price tag

Motorola Nexus 6 AT&TIf you have grabbed a bottle, a case, a sixer or just a few sodas to help keep you entertained though the evening while you hopefully catch anything Motorola Nexus 6 related, then you are in luck. Seems AT&T slipped up some and have a listing in their system for the Motorola Nexus 6. Before you go losing your mind, the link doesn’t work and yes, that isn’t a Nexus 6 image. Rather it is place holder image of a LG G3 Vista.

The associated link does take you to the Motorola device offerings from AT&T though. Which more than enough confirmation for me that AT&T will be launching the Nexus 6 soon. The current pricing listed on the image points to $49.99 with a new contract. I am not 100% sold on that myself, but it is very possible. If you want to see it for yourself then head to AT&T to the LG G3 Vigor page. Look over to the field on the right and you should still see it listed. I did at least.

Let the madness continue!

Gaming culture critic Sarkeesian cancels speech after school shooting threats

Following threats of extreme violence at Utah State University, feminist culture-critic Anita Sarkeesian has cancelled her speech at the school scheduled for Wednesday. This morning, someone claiming to be a student at the university emailed staff members, saying that he or she would commit “the deadliest school shooting in American history” if the event wasn’t cancelled, according to Utah newspaper The Standard Examiner. The email’s author says that feminists have ruined their life and promised a “Montreal Massacre-style attack,” stating that he or she possesses a variety of firearms and explosives and that no one in attendance or at the campus’ Women’s Center would be able to defend themselves should the lecture take place. This isn’t the first time Sarkeesian has come under threat, either — let alone the first time this year.

Recently, Sarkeesian has spoken out against violence being committed against female characters in video games via her Tropes vs. Women in Games video series. Dissenters are making their disapproval known with death threats. And those dissenters? Some are extreme members of the GamerGate movement — the online group that bombarded Intel with requests for the company to pull its advertisement from Gamasutra earlier this month. While GamerGate has origins in a quest for more ethical journalism in the gaming community, it’s been co-opted by people keen on threatening female game developers and their families with rape and other violence. For a detailed breakdown of exactly what GamerGate is, be sure to read Deadspin‘s explainer on the subject.
