Dropbox’s iOS 8 app adds support for Touch ID
Not to be outdone by Microsoft’s recent refresh of OneDrive, Dropbox has now made its iOS app compatible with Apple’s fingerprint-scanning technology, Touch ID, as well. You’ll need iOS 8 in order for the feature to work, but chances are you’re already running the latest and greatest software from Apple anyway. Aside from adding the ability to unlock the application by way of Touch ID, Dropbox also updated it to support the bigger screens of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus — something that owners of Apple’s newest smartphones will definitely appreciate. Now someone tell Google to hurry and do the same for Drive.

China allegedly using iCloud to secretly collect user data
Notorious for the constant surveilling and censorship of its people, the Chinese government appears to be at it again — this time with Apple iOS users. According to a report from GreatFire.org, a website that focuses on privacy matters, China has secretly started collecting iCloud data through what’s known as a “man-in-the-middle” intrusion; basically, the attacker eavesdrops by independently connecting to the user and making it seem as if it’s a private connection, when, in fact, it isn’t. Chinese Security expert Zhou Shuguang suggests that the network service providers are likely being told by the authorities to use fake trust certificates, making it rather easy for them to conduct these attacks.
The purported SSL attack on iCloud by China officials comes as Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have just been released in that country, where there’s estimated to be upwards of 100 million people using an iPhone. At the same time, this issue is hot on the heels of Apple announcing it would begin storing personal data in servers in China, as it looked to improve cloud features like iMessage and others. Back then, Apple said all info would be encrypted, adding that data center providers were not going to “have access to the content.” Still, it’s unclear at the moment if that’s related in any way.
We’ve reached out to Apple for comment on the matter and will update this story if we hear back.

OnePlus One to open up pre-orders soon, but there’s a catch
The OnePlus One has been sort of an underground hit, namely due to the fact you could only purchase the handset with an invite. Thankfully, if you’ve had your eyes on it for a while, OnePlus just revealed that its $300 Android smartphone is, more or less, ready to go mainstream next week, on October 27th. Pre-orders for the newly announced general availability are set to go live that day at 11AM ET, which is great news to people who haven’t had a chance to jump on the invite-only wave. The bad news, however, is that this is going to be limited to a one-hour window. For now, OnePlus is continuing to take invites, so that’s still an option to those with access to one. “While the pre-order system won’t completely replace the current invites method, it is certainly a huge step towards expanding the reach of OnePlus,” the company said in a blog post.
It may not be the best solution to keep up with the high demand — but, at the very least, it’s a better option than to be hunting for an invite. Those interested need to keep this page here bookmarked — that’s where the pre-orders are expected to be taken in due time.

Apple’s iOS 8.1 update is waiting for you to download it
Well, it’s Monday, and that can only mean one thing: Apple’s iOS 8.1 update has finally gone live for your installing pleasure. To recap, the new software – which is debuting just over a month since iOS 8 first hit – brings back once-trashed favorites like the Camera Roll, and strengthens the connection between your iPhone and Yosemite-powered Mac with features like SMS handoff and the uber-impressive Instant Hotspot. Perhaps most importantly, Apple Pay’s launching today too: once you’ve installed 8.1 and set everything up, you’ll be able to trudge down to your local Walgreen’s (along with a horde of other participating retailers) to pay for your contact solution and Haribo gummies with your phone. If that sounds like a good time, all you need to do is pop into your iPhone’s settings and jump into the Software Update menu – the 126MB file should be ready and waiting for you.

Sky Go adds the Channel 5 family and ITVBe to its streaming roster
If there’s one slight criticism to be made of the free Sky Go service — which lets Sky subscribers stream live TV and on demand content to computers and mobile devices — it’s that you can’t access the full selection of channels found on your set-top box at home. The same can be said of Virgin’s equivalent TV Anywhere service, and bit by bit, both providers are strengthening these offerings with additional channels. Today, it’s Sky’s turn to announce a handful you can now stream through Sky Go for the first time, including Channel 5, which is home to the new Batman-inspired Gotham series, and its sister channels 5* and 5USA. British Eurosport 2 is also now available on Sky Go, alongside the freshly launched channel ITVBe — also known as the place braincells go to die.

OnePlus pre-order system will go live for 24 hours on October 27th
Earlier this month, OnePlus tested out a pre-order system instead of the extremely difficult invite system that they’ve used to sell the OnePlus One so far. The pre-orders were also sent out as “invitations,” however, so not everyone had a chance to put an order in. Fortunately, the company is opening up their pre-0rder system again next week, but this time it will be open to anyone that wants to put an order in.
Starting today, you can add a OnePlus One and accessories to your shopping cart and get everything ready to be ordered. Then, for 24 hours on October 27th, those orders will process and you’ll immediately get a date for when your device will ship. It’s not clear on just how far back those shipping dates will be, but I guess we’ll know next week.
Unfortunately, this pre-order system isn’t going to completely replace the OnePlus invite system. The company plans to eventually do away with invites and permanently move onto something else, but for right now, this is the best you’ll get.

Gmail 5.0 update will support Outlook and Yahoo accounts
Google’s new Material design has been popping up in updates for many of their apps, and the Gmail app has finally joined the party, bringing other email services with it. While the apk isn’t (officially) available yet, we do have Google’s onboarding video which you can watch after the break.
The update will include support for Outlook and Yahoo accounts. It will be interesting to see if they add other services in the future and if they do, if they’ll discontinue the standard Email app built into Android. The update looks great and appears to be quite functional. Let us know in the comments what you think!

HTC’s Android 5.0 update roadmap leaks
HTC has already confirmed that they’re planning on getting the Android 5.0 update out to the HTC One M7 and M8 within 90 days of receiving the code from Google. However, they haven’t clarified anything about other devices, but fortunately a leaked roadmap has shed some light on what devices will receive the update, and when that will happen.
The M7 and M8 are still slated for what will probably be a January/February release. The Google Play Editions of those devices are probably going to see an update much earlier, though, with a release date pegged for late November or early December.
Other devices, including the dual-SIM versions of the M7 and M8, plus the Desire Eye, Butterfly 2, and the HTC One E8 are all looking at launch windows of January to March. The HTC One Mini 2 and Desire 816 are slated for a March/April update, and the One Max, original One Mini, and the Butterfly S are all looking at a March to May timeframe.
HTC is pretty committed to getting their devices updated, but there are tons of variables that go into these updates, so there’s no 100% guarantee that any of these devices will actually get the update. Still, HTC has done a much better job than most OEMs, so keep an ear out for any more details as we get closer to next year.
