Ultra affordable Moto E gets added the Republic Wireless line-up
Republic Wireless has announced a third device addition to their official line-up today. The MVNO carrier already offers the older, but still great, Moto X and Moto G for customers looking to cut the big name carriers out of the equation with low-cost solutions. Now they are adding the Moto E to the mix.
The addition of the Moto E rounds out the Republic Wireless offering quite nicely with the device only being $99.99 out-of-pocket. The Moto E brings a smaller 4.3-inch 960×540 resolution screen, dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB internal storage. Unlike the Moto X and Moto G, the Moto E does offer micro SD support. Republic Wireless is currently offering the Moto E in both White or Black
Plan wise Republic Wireless has a variety of offerings suited for just about anyone. You can go for a Wi-Fi only service for $5 a month, Wi-Fi and 3G cell coverage for $25 , or Wi-Fi and 4G cell for $40. (The Moto E offering doesn’t support 4G) All of which are unlimited talk and text and data. Republic Wireless uses Sprints network as their coverage choice.
Go check out the new phone and the plans if anything above sounds like it might interest you. I am personally thinking a Moto E and the Wi-Fi only plan for $5 a month would make a great home phone option for the kids. Heck, even the $10 a month plan with no data outside of Wi-Fi would be a pretty sweet deal.

The Motorola Nexus 6 is now official, $649 starting with pre-orders later this month
Christmas for Android fans is here. The Google Nexus 6 has officially been announced today and probably more than anything, we’re just glad to see it in the flesh. As we expected, the Motorola manufactured device takes many of its design cues from the Moto X 2014 but bigger, courtesy of that 5.9-inch 1440×2560 display that some love and some have been dreading. It seems the rumors have been pretty much spot on about the hardware of the Nexus 6 including the Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz, 3GB RAM and a 3,200mAh. It will sport Android L, which has been announced and confirmed as Lollipop.
Quickly digging through the specs listed through Motorola about the device we find out that they list the battery life as being 24 hours of mixed usage. It is also water resistant.
Motorola states the Nexus 6 will be available for pre-orders starting in late October and be available in November with a starting price tag of $649. You will have the choice of Midnight Blue or Cloud White as well as 32GB or 64GB options.
You can sign-up to stay in the loop about the Nexus 6 through Motorola and hit the devices product page over here.

Google Classroom getting several improvements for students and teachers
Earlier this summer, Google launched Google Classroom in an attempt to improve the education experience for teachers and students around the world. It offers many things to make it easier (and cheaper) for classrooms to go paperless and collaborate and communicate more efficiently. Today, Google announced five new features for Classroom to improve that experience even more.
Teachers will now have the ability to invite students to a group or class if they already have a Google Group in place for it. It works with student information systems, too, so class rosters can be quickly synced to set up classes quickly. In addition to that, they’ll also be able to manage their class streams, adjusting which students can or cannot post in a group. They’ll also be able to download student grades in bulk, and can sort students by first or last name.
On the student end, Google has added the option to mark assignments as done, which is intended to be used for projects that don’t have any work to actually turn in. This can be something like reading a chapter of a book or working on a project. This helps students more easily keep up with work, and allows teachers to more closely monitor their progress.
Overall, these are some very welcome additions, and it shows that Google is very committed to maintaining a strong presence in the education system around the globe.

Google Play Store downloads beat out iOS App Store downloads in volume by 60%
According to the latest numbers about app store downloads, Google’s Play Store sees about 60% more volume for downloads than Apple’s App Store. There were roughly 160 million downloads in Q3 on the Play Store, while the App Store only saw about 100 million. Both are impressive numbers however you slice, but Android’s enormous market share globally is really showing through here.
On the opposite end of that, however, the App Store is still consistently bringing in more revenue. Apple makes about 60% more revenue than Google does with their store, much of which can be attributed to the fact that Android gets a ton of its market share from developing countries that are significantly less likely to make any purchases on an app store. When customers do make purchases on the Play Store, it seems like the majority of those buys are on games. Just about all of Google’s revenue growth in the US and South Korea this quarter came from mobile games, not apps.
This report is pretty consistent with what we usually see. Android maintains the lead in volume and numbers, while iOS tends to bring in more money.

Motorola announces which devices will get Android 5.0
Now that Android Lollipop and Motorola’s enormous Nexus 6 are official, Moto has clarified which of their devices will be seeing the update to Android 5.0. The good news? If you own any kind of recent Motorola device, you’re probably getting this update.
Both the old and new Moto X will see the update, as well as all versions of the Moto G. The Moto E is also getting updated, and Verizon’s lineup of the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini are, too. That covers pretty much every major device Motorola has announced within the past two years.
No word on exactly when you’ll start seeing these updates, but Motorola has been very quick with their devices lately. Now we’ll just have to wait on HTC and others to clear things up.

Opera redesigns its desktop browser with visually rich bookmarks
Even though Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari are what most people use to browse the web on their desktops or laptops, this hasn’t managed to lower Opera’s spirits one bit. And that’s definitely a great thing for people who prefer the Opera desktop browser over the aforementioned alternatives from Microsoft, Mozilla, Google and Apple, respectively. Today, Opera 25 is being introduced for Mac and Windows, which features bookmarking options that are highlighted by image-heavy thumbnails — it’s similar to what Safari’s Top Sites window does in the browser nowadays, only with slightly different purpose.
Thanks to Opera 25, you’ll now have the option to customize the visuals that show up when the Bookmarks tab is opened, allowing you to choose any image for each of your favorite sites. Opera says the new version was designed after realizing how people use bookmarking on the internet, citing that it was important to make them as close to the heart as possible, kind of like a great memory.

Amazon’s Instant Video app now shows your homemade movies
Amazon’s Instant Video isn’t just for watching blockbuster hits (or the occasional original series) any more; you can now use it to watch some of your own content, too. Upgraded Instant Video apps for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and certain TVs from LG and Samsung can show photos and videos stored in Amazon Cloud Drive, letting you both relive your kid’s dance recital and play Frozen without switching apps or devices. The option is only available in Germany, the UK and the US right now, although Amazon is promising at least support for more gadgets in the long. Having said this, there isn’t a big rush for further app upgrades when you can just switch to the Cloud Drive apps on computers and mobile gear — this improvement matters most when you’re glued to the big screen.

HBO’s standalone streaming service will arrive in 2015
If you’ve been pining for HBO without having to splurge for a cable subscription, you may soon be in luck. At a Time Warner investor meeting today, HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler announced that the company would flip the switch on a web-based streaming service next year. The over-the-top option will leverage HBO’s current partners and offer access to its content without the need for a full cable package. During his remarks, Plepler mentioned that there are 10 million homes that only pay for internet rather than a bundle, and the figure is only expected to grow. Of course, there’s no word on pricing or any of the finer details right now, but we expect to hear much more in the months to come. If you’ll recall, reports indicate that ESPN is also working on an NBA streaming option, serving up a slate of live regular-season games to folks who don’t pay for cable service.

Apple Reportedly Rolling Out New ‘3D-Like’ Apple Logo Designs for Upcoming Products
Apple may be enhancing the iconic look of its Apple logo on upcoming products, claims Digitimes in a report sourced from Taiwan-based supply chain insiders. While the site has a sketchy history with Apple rumors, it does sometimes offer accurate information and this is a rather specific and unique claim that could mark an interesting visual change for Apple’s future products.
According to these anonymous sources, Apple has been developing new cutting and etching technology that will give the Apple logo a “3D-like” appearance.
Apple is also planning to upgrade the technologies used for printing its logo onto devices and will use laser cutting and unique embedded technologies to make the logo 3D-like and shine at the edges. All Apple’s products will feature the new logo in 2015, starting with the next-generation iMac, the sources detailed.
Apple is actually expected to introduce the new iMac, which is presumably the machine the report refers to as the first with the new logo, at tomorrow’s media event.
The site also claims Apple will unveil its new 12-inch Retina MacBook Air at tomorrow’s event, but this is all but confirmed to be false, as a report from the very reliable Re/code noted earlier this week that the Retina MacBook Air will not be introduced at the event.
Apple will kick off its media event on Thursday at 10:00 AM Pacific Time. Apple is expected to unveil new iPads, new iMac models and the final details on OS X Yosemite. The possibility of a new Mac mini also was mentioned in one report earlier this year, but further details on this potential desktop refresh have been nonexistent.
