Scientists want you to find cosmic rays using your phone’s camera
Cosmic ray particles hit Earth’s atmosphere all the time, but finding them is tough; even the most sophisticated detectors can only cover so much ground. Scientists at University of California might just have discovered an easy way to pinpoint these exotic elements, however: the camera on your smartphone. The team’s upcoming CRAYFIS (Cosmic Rays Found in Smartphones) app looks for high energy particles hitting the camera sensor on your device as soon it’s both asleep and charging. While one phone wouldn’t collect much data by itself, a gaggle of them would be extremely powerful; 1,000 phones in a square kilometer (0.4 square miles) would capture virtually every particle zooming overhead. They could actually be more effective than existing detection arrays, which tend to oversaturate quickly.
The tricky bit is getting enough people to enlist. The CRAYFIS group is taking sign-ups to beta test its app on Android and iOS, but the odds of getting that many volunteers in a concentrated area could be rather slim for a long time. A comprehensive, worldwide network of detectors would also require a million phones. With that said, it’s not hard to imagine a future where people in densely-packed cities are spotting gamma ray showers simply by leaving their handsets plugged in overnight.

Dorian Nakamoto is raising money to sue Newsweek
March was a busy month for Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto — Newsweek named him as the “face behind Bitcoin,” a cryptocurrency the California resident claims to have only heard about a few weeks before the article’s publication. Nakamoto hired a lawyer and issued a unconditional denial of allegations. Now it seems like that lawyer is about to go to work: Nakamoto has launched a legal defense fund to help pay for an impending lawsuit against Newsweek. The fund’s URL and official Twitter account are bluntly named, and to the point: “NewsweekLied.”
The Legal Defense Fund’s webpage is pretty simple: just three pages containing background information on the article, a slight rewording of the statement Nakamoto provided back in March and a picture of Nakamoto himself, holding a sign that reads “Newsweek’s article hurt my family.” Even if Nakamoto really isn’t the cryptocurrency’s founder, it’s being used to provide the man aid — the fund requests that donations of $1,000 or more be contributed directly to a Bitcoin wallet, and the community has donated over $23,000 for his personal use. The site says that all funds will be used towards the Newsweek case, explaining that anything left over will be given directly to the unemployed engineer to help him cover his expenses.
Dorian Nakamoto is launching a Legal Defense Fund, which is really more of an Attack Fund. He wants to sue Newsweek: http://t.co/xdI1lFbduM

Why not? Someone has put an emulated Game Boy Color on Android Wear and plays Pokemon
First Windows 95, now Game Boy Color on Android Wear. We know Android Wear is basically Android for smartwatches, so it’s no surprise that it appears to work just as well as a mini Android device. So much so that Corbin Davenport, the same guy who put Windows 95 on Android Wear, has put an emulated Game Boy Color on Android Wear and plays Pokemon with it. Check out the video below:
If that’s not already cool enough, Davenport hooks up a MOGA Bluetooth controller to play an assortment of Gameboy Color games like Pokemon, Super Mario and Tetris and apparently didn’t need to jump through any hoops to make it work with the Samsung Gear Live via Bluetooth. We wouldn’t be surprised to see more from Davenport as he seems intent on trying as many things as technically possible on his Gear Live.
What would you like to see running on an Android Wear device? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Publishing houses are throwing book deals at YouTube ‘stars’

Let’s say you can’t get enough of it’sGrace (above) on YouTube but you’re taking a week-long no-tech camping trip soon and aren’t excited about missing her wit and charm. Well, host Grace Helbig’s book Grace’s Guide: The Art of Pretending to Be a Grown-up is out next week, so that won’t be a problem for much longer. She isn’t alone, either, as other YouTubers are getting publishing deals as well, according to The Wall Street Journal. Alfie Deyes of Pointless Blog fame and style/make-up vlogger Michelle Phan have tomes out and en route, respectively, too. All have subscribers by the millions (Phan has over 7 million), and publishing houses are apparently hopeful that their online success translates to reaching teens, getting them to post about the books on Twitter, Instagram and probably Tumblr too.
Entertainment production house Dreamworks SKG is getting in on the action with a pair of YouTube-based books too. WSJ notes that this could be a way to combat the (unpopular) way YouTube splits ad revenue with its content creators and fill in the tip-jar gaps. There isn’t a guarantee that this will work out in the longterm for any of the involved parties, especially considering that it’s relatively new ground and watching video clips online is more or less free whereas books cost money up front. There’s also the matter of the time and attention span that it takes to watch a video rife with quick cuts and other editing techniques, versus that of reading a book. If these early deals prove successful, though, it isn’t a stretch to imagine that they’ll become more and more common.

Will.i.am is launching his smartwatch this week
Will.i.am must have solved whatever has delayed his smartwatch’s original July debut, because he’s launching it this week and proving it’s not vaporware. The musician will finally make the big reveal on Wednesday night in San Francisco during Salesforce.com’s Dreamforce event — just ahead of Apple’s upcoming event. As we reported the first time news of the device has surfaced, its creator claims the gadget’s able to make and take calls even if it’s not connected to a phone, and that it has Bluetooth, WiFi and even Facebook, Instagram and Twitter apps. The Telegraph also says it has a curved screen and can store music locally, though it might come with a digital music service, as well. Will.i.am has supposedly convinced music labels to sign on the dotted line with help from UK firm 7digital, promising them equal treatment unlike other services that offer lower deals to indie labels. We’ll know for sure once the watch has been officially launched, so keep an eye out for more details later this week.

AT&T’s new travel plans let you text as much as you want
AT&T’s international cellphone plans have become more affordable over time, but they’ve still been wildly expensive in some cases — besides the low data caps, even frequent texting can cost a lot of money. Things just got a little more reasonable with the carrier’s new Passport plans, however. The smartphone add-ons still ask you to pay between $30 to $120 per month for a paltry 120MB to 800MB of data, but they now include unlimited SMS messaging and WiFi service (on Android and iOS) in the bargain. In short, you won’t run into any nasty overage fees simply because you got into a deep text conversation or uploaded too many vacation photos through one of AT&T’s hotspot partners. These new one-time tiers are available now, and regular Global plans have received a matching upgrade if you routinely venture abroad.

OnePlus and JBL partner to create earphones for the OnePlus One

It seems OnePlus wants to partner itself with JBL, as early on Monday they announced on Google+ that JBL is making OnePlus branded earphones “coming soon”.
These premium earphones will be $39.99, and will have a frequency range of 10Hz – 22,000 Hz. They will have also a 9mm driver, and buttons that will control music playback, volume, phone calls, and even a camera shutter.
As OnePlus seeks to make a bigger name for itself, it makes sense that they would partner with a well-known company to create branded earphones.
What do you think of these premium earphones? Would you buy them?
