Square now tells your barista when to start brewing
Square isn’t just in the business of selling things — it wants to help you buy stuff too. And now, it’s taking the latter a step further by simplifying your daily quest for a piping-hot cup o’ joe. After today’s update, you can use the Square Order app to purchase coffee from a nearby Square-friendly cafe. So? Here’s the cool part: By using your phone’s location data, Order alerts the barista to start brewing the drink once you’re within a certain distance from the shop.
Once you arrive, the pickup is a cinch: Just grab it, walk out and your payment will be processed automatically — no lines, no interaction. That means whether you order the night before or while en route, you, the happy customer, is (almost) guaranteed a freshly made cup of java. And, if you have a regular routine, your daily orders customizations will be saved within the app for future use. Want to try it out? Blue Bottle coffee houses will support the feature as early as today, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it won’t be the only business to jump on the bandwagon.

Apple TV update displays smart device info through HomeKit
Apple TV may soon be the defacto HomeKit smart home hub, judging release notes for the latest beta spotted by AppleInsider. The Software beta 2 release can now be “used for testing AirPlay and HomeKit with your iOS apps,” letting you set the devices as a remote HomeKit peer by connecting to iCloud. After that, info from smart devices like bulbs and thermostats will be automatically synced to Apple TV. Apple announced 18 partners at HomeKit’s launch, including Philips and Honeywell (but not Google-owned Nest) and has added several more recently. Though functionality seems limited for now, it looks like Cupertino is thinking ahead to the day when Apple TV could serve as a HomeKit mission control center. The set-top device is long overdue for a software overhall, so hopefully it’s the start of Tim Cook’s “grand vision” for Apple TV. If you’d like to try, you’ll need access to the developer portal and a dose of gumption.

Google offers three months free Now TV streaming to UK Chromecast owners
Every now and again, Google likes to give something back to Chromecast owners. In July, it celebrated the streaming dongle’s first birthday by offering a free 90-day subscription to Google Play Music All Access, but now it’s now decided to provide UK streamers with more of a visual treat. If you head on over to Google’s Chromecast Offers site right now, you’ll be offered a free three month Entertainment Pass for Now TV, allowing you to stream all 13 of Sky’s pay TV channels live or on-demand. Sky’s streaming service hasn’t been available on the Chromecast all that long, so now might be the time to see what it’s all about.

Google mobile app gets updated again

It wasn’t so long ago we all downloaded the Google Search app on our phones and were excited to have a dedicated search app from our favorite search engine. But, as Google kept growing, the Google Search app grew too, in fact, it grew right out of its name. With the addition of Google Now, and the expanded role the search app was taking on our phone the Google Search name became less and less relevant.
A few weeks ago Google quietly updated the Google Search app and gave it a much more appropriate name, Google. And, just yesterday, the Google mobile app was updated again with a handy new function.
From Google,
When you can’t remember whether you’ve paid your bills—or you simply can’t remember how much money you need to pay—you can now just ask Google. Tap the mic on the Google app (g.co/googleapp) and say, “Show me my bills” or “My bills due this week.” If you have the payment due date and amount in your Gmail, you’ll see a quick summary of upcoming and past bills.

This year’s ‘Call of Duty’ on PS3 and 360 comes with a free new-gen upgrade
Activision is taking a page out of its own book and throwing Call of Duty fans that haven’t yet upgraded to new consoles a bone. That’s right, if you pick up a digital copy of this year’s Advanced Warfare for either the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, you’ll get a free upgrade to a new-gen copy within the same console family. That means PlayStation 3 begets a PlayStation 4 download and Xbox 360 in turn unlocks an Xbox One version. What’s more, each console will retain its respective license and you’ll still be able to play online with your buddies on new and old boxes (with frickin’ lasers!) after you do the deed. The offer expires at the end of next March, and like with Destiny before it, premium content like season passes will carry over too. Sounds like a pretty great deal unless, of course, you were planning to pick up one of those special edition Xbox Ones.
Thinking of getting a new console? Upgrade your copy of #AdvancedWarfare for free. Details: http://t.co/zy4oBcHT1J pic.twitter.com/35RmYPV9kT

Nokia’s HERE Maps Android app now available on Samsung Galaxy devices
While we were able to get our hands on an advance release of Nokia’s new HERE Maps app for Android, the company had to a make a few minor tweaks before it was ready for public consumption. It appears all of those outstanding boxes have now been ticked, because the app has just gone live on Samsung’s Galaxy app store. Unfortunately, thanks to Samsung’s considerable marketing muscle, the app currently only offers Galaxy device owners access to its offline maps, turn-by-turn navigation and transit features. That means you’ll have to wait a little longer to grab the app (or until an enterprising developer extends its availability) if you own a non-Samsung device. However, if you’re looking for a very accomplished alternative to Google Maps, it’s definitely worth being a little more patient.

SwiftKey’s first iOS update helps you start typing faster
If you jumped at the chance to try the first wave of third-party iOS keyboards, you probably noticed that they’re a little… rough around the edges. You may want to give at least one of them a second try, though. SwiftKey has just released the first update to its iOS input method, and it tackles some of the larger gripes that early adopters have noticed. The biggest deal is the improved load time, which should let you start typing faster; there are also fixes for some easy-to-reproduce crashes, like one that occurs when you backspace over emoji. Head over to the App Store if you’re eager to iron out of some of SwiftKey’s earliest wrinkles.

Ofcom slaps Three with a £250,000 fine for failing to handle customer complaints
While Three is currently the UK’s fastest-growing network, it certainly can’t rest on its laurels. In fact, it’s just been given a sharp wake-up call, after Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, handed the carrier a £250,000 fine over its inadequate handling of customer grievances. According to the watchdog, Three closed complaints before they were fully resolved and was guilty of not logging complaint calls from customers when it should have done. While it now has to hand over a cool quarter of a million to appease Ofcom (which is then absorbed by the Treasury), Three has apparently sorted out its internal processes and is now compliant with regulations — good news if you enjoy the carrier’s unlimited tariffs but weren’t so impressed by its customer service.
