Scratching cassettes like vinyl records brings a new meaning to mixtapes
Sure, you could load a pair of turntables with a couple of vinyl records to hone those DJ skills, but what about that old cassette collection? Well, one inventive fellow created his own set-up using the tapes to achieve the same goal. Jeremy Bell created The ScrubBoard: a pair of cassette tape sections stretched across a board (hence the name) for scratching with a pair of tape heads. The two heads have been removed from Walkman-like cassette players, and the portable devices remain plugged into a sound system of some sort for audio. As Fact Mag points out, similar setups have been constructed before, but if you’ve got a stack of tapes and a couple of the portable players lying around, this certainly seems like a worthwhile weekend project. Bell is also looking to raise funds to create a actual product based on the project, which you can see in action after the break.

Attackers hit Yahoo using the Shellshock bug, but your data is safe
Looks like it didn’t take long for the Shellshock security flaw to claim its first major victim. Yahoo has confirmed to both Future South Technologies and SecurityWeek that hackers used the command line exploit to breach at least two of its servers. Future South’s Jonathan Hall found that the Romania-based intruders were using Shellshock to slowly hijack servers (including those of other companies) and build up an “arsenal” for hitting increasingly valuable targets, particularly Yahoo Games.
Yahoo is quick to note that there’s “no evidence” the perpetrators compromised any data, so you probably won’t be scrambling to change your password in the near future. The tech firm also cut off the affected systems from the outside world, and has been patching up servers to prevent future Shellshock strikes (insofar as it can, anyway). That’s all good to hear, but Hall says that the consequences of the attacks might have been much, much worse — if the hackers were more aggressive, they could have swiped email accounts and other precious info.

What’s on your HDTV: ‘Walking Dead’, ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, ‘Alien: Isolation’
Syfy is now home to two zombie series but no one can replace the king — The Walking Dead returns on AMC Sunday night. Naturally, that also means the return of Talking Dead with Chris Hardwick, which we’ve grown to like. That includes the excellent Edge of Tomorrow aka Live Die Repeat starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Disney’s Sleeping Beauty and the 30th Anniversary release of The NeverEnding Story. Gamers have yet another excellent racer to look forward to in DriveClub on PS4 while Xbox One launches the innovative Project Spark. For your cross-platform enjoyment, there’s NBA 2K15 and Alien: Isolation. Yahoo looking to invest in popular messaging app Snapchat
According to sources Yahoo and Snapchat have held talks that are expected to lead to Yahoo investing in the popular messaging apps next round of funding. Snapchat is valued at around $10 billion and well over 100 million downloads.
I am sure many of you are aware of what Snapchat is, but for those that aren’t here ya go. It is a messaging app that lets you send text, photos and video to other Snapchat friends instantly. Nothing ground breaking there. However, the messages, images and videos are only available for a very short period of time, 10 seconds, before they are erased from the servers and your device. Some have called it the near perfect cheaters tool.
Talks of investing are just that right now, talks. We don’t know how much Yahoo might be putting upfront or what it would mean for Snapchat. Reuters reports that there are two others that will be investing in the business as well, Institutional Venture Partners and DST Global. Both have previously invested in the company.
At least we know this is planned as an investment vs a purchase like they did with Aviate. That should mean the purple coloring and a ‘by Yahoo’ tag won’t be getting added. Anything is possible though. All depends on the deal and investment I suppose.

LTE Speeds of iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s Compared in New Video
According to Apple, both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus have “faster LTE download speeds” than the iPhone 5s, reaching up to 150Mbps thanks to the inclusion of the Qualcomm MDM9625M LTE chip, which supports LTE Advanced.
A demonstration of the speed difference between the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6 when connected to a high-quality LTE network has been conducted by iClarified, suggesting the iPhone 6 is able to reach much higher speeds than the iPhone 5s.
The test, which was conducted in London, Ontario, Canada on the Fido network, shows the iPhone 6 topping out at download speeds of 101Mbps while the iPhone 5s reaches 35Mbps. Upload speeds are similarly improved, reaching 27Mbps on the iPhone 6.
According to iClarified, the tests, which were conducted using the Ookla SpeedTest.net app, were done in a spot in the city where the best reception was found.
We were able to consistently reach speeds in the high 90s with the iPhone 6. The absolute highest download speed we were able to obtain was 111 Mbps. I’m confident that if the conditions were optimal we could have obtained even higher speeds.
First introduced in 2013, LTE Advanced takes advantage of carrier aggregation technology, combining separate spectrums into a single faster connection to increase data speeds and network capacity. Several carriers offer the technology, and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are Apple’s first devices to support it. Because not all carriers support LTE Advanced and due to differences in connection strength, not all users may see increased speeds on Apple’s new devices.
Along with LTE Advanced, Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus offer several other connectivity improvements, including support for up to 20 different LTE bands. With additional bands (7 more than the iPhone 5s), iPhone users are able to connect to more LTE networks when traveling abroad and LTE connections are available in more countries. The phones also include support for voice over LTE (VoLTE), improving voice quality and allowing some users to access voice and data simultaneously over LTE for the first time.

Fresh Samsung Galaxy A5, A3 images show off aluminum unibody

So, we’ve heard quite a bit about the rumored Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 in the past few weeks. These mid-rangers are rumored to be released around Q3 for about $350-500. But up until now, we’ve only seen a few low-quality pictures of the devices.
AndroidMX recently tweeted a group of photos featuring the new devices. Take a look at the video below to see a pretty decent first look at the devices.
As you can see, the A3 and A5 feature Samsung’s new design language, much like we’ve seen on the new Galaxy Alpha. It’s made of an aluminum-like material, along with chamfered edges, a non-removable back, and (possibly dual) Nano-SIM card slots.
Are you excited to see what’s to come of the new direction Samsung is taking with their hardware? They’re certainly taking themselves more seriously with the materials that they’re using, along with the rumored price of the phones. We’ll still have to wait for a little while to see what comes of it.

Redbox Instant closing its services October 7th, best use up your Kiosk credits
Looks like Redbox Instant just didn’t bring in the bucks that they, or Verizon, thought it would. The service will be shutting down on October 7th, 2014, at 11:59 p.m. PST.
The service is shutting down because it was not as successful as we hoped it would be. We apologize for any inconvenience and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to entertain you.
Redbox will be proactively sending out emails to current customers on October 10th with information on applicable refund options. Those will include partial monthly credits for the month and refunds for on-demand movies that have been paid for, but not yet watched.
There is the other matter of purchased movies that you own in your digital locker. Redbox is looking into solution on how to make sure your purchase is available to you. They don’t seem to have a solution as of yet. Individuals with content in their digital lockers should receive information in their email in boxes in about two weeks with a solution.
If you happen to have an Redbox Kiosk credits available, you will want to get those used before the aforementioned date and time as well.
They gave it a good run, but I think their business is better suited with the Kiosk rentals. The digitally hardened individuals out there have access to so much more that it is hard to convince us to spend $10 a month. “A” for effort guys. Maybe there will be a revamp and relaunch sometime in the future.

Moto G LTE headed to AT&T October 10th
AT&T has announced a new device, for them, that is headed for their shelves on October 10th. They are officially going to be stocking the Moto G with LTE connectivity this coming Friday.
The Moto G LTE will be offered at just $179.99 outright for those that don’t want a contract or the Next program. Opt for a 1 year contract and get it for $79.99. Roll it on to the Next 12 for $9 a month or $7.50 a month on the Next 18. No matter which way you end up getting the device in your hands, you’ll be gaining a solid product for the price tag. Don’t go getting this one confused with the Moto G 2nd gen that was announced last month. That one doesn’t offer LTE. This is the Moto G LTE which is just a LTE variant of the original Moto G that Motorola put out last year.
The Moto G LTE brings the 4.5-inch 720p LCD screen, Snapdragon 400 processor, and 8GB of storage along with Android 4.4. One could have conceivably purchased it through Amazon for a while now, but at $199.99. So you would save yourself $20 through AT&T so long as you don’t mind being carrier locked. On the Next programs though this is a real win for consumers that can’t or don’t want to, shell out $200 upfront but don’t need an additional $25 a month on their bill.
Any interest?

New image editing options added to Google Slides online
A few months ago Google added a few little options to Slides through your Google Drive that let you crop and add borders. Today they have announced, and added, the ability to fine tune the image in slides a little more.
With the new editing options you can adjust the transparency, brightness and contrast of your included image. You can also recolor the image to make it better match the Slides as well. One step closer to having all the tools needed in one app for creation and editing. I imagine this editing feature will find its way to other Drive applications in time. Pop into Slides on your desktop or laptop and check it out.
