Google Play Newsstands gets an update with some material design changes [APK Download]

Google Play Newsstands is starting to update across devices today in a typical staged roll out. It has already been one year since Google has re-branded Play Magazines to Newsstand, and I am for one liking it much better. The updates for the app since it has change over have been slow. The last update I have recorded was back in May. Today’s update moves the app to version 3.3 and brings along a number of visual changes to bring the app inline with Google latest material design guidelines.

Google Play NewsstandGoogle Play NewsstandGoogle Play NewsstandThe new design incorporates larger images more contextual headers and smoother transitions. You are also gaining the ability to swipe horizontally between topics and vertically to dive deeper into the specific topic you have landed on.

The icon for the app also got changed up a little bit. The whole app feels a lot nicer and certainly has a great visual appeal to it.

As usual, the APK is available for your side-loading pleasure so you don’t have to stare at the images and wonder what it looks like on your device. Head over to Gappsearly and pick it up.

SamMobile gets a 8 minute sneak peak of Android L on the Samsung Galaxy S5

Android L on the Samsung Galaxy S5We’re now less than one month away from the alleged official launch of Android L which means that software update season is going to begin. Samsung isn’t usually the first name to come up when talking about quick updates, but from an eight minute exclusive video of Android L on the Samsung Galaxy S5, it looks like Samsung has already been busy behind the scenes. The video walks through a few of the new improvements and menus which is featured in the Samsung Android L test build LRW58J. Check it out:

As you can see, Android L on the Galaxy S5 has all the hallmarks of Material Design, with the slick transitions and a brighter colour palette. Perhaps unfortunately, Samsung’s interpretation is still very skinned and very much TouchWiz influenced – Samsung has apparently even neglected the notification icon changes that we have spotted in previous leaked screenshots. Whether you support this or not is entirely your preference, but we would have though more OEMs would have opted for a more “stock” approach given that Google has worked so hard on the UI for Android L.

What do you think about Android L on the Samsung Galaxy S5? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Which routers are worth buying?

Routers are one of those devices you probably don’t think about very much. As long as it gets you online and gives you the content you need, there’s no reason to. But with bandwidth demands increasing and new wireless standards emerging, the limits of your router start to become a little more apparent and a lot more frustrating. If it’s time for a new one, there’s a lot to consider beyond how fast it is — though that’s pretty important, too. Which routers can handle the traffic you throw at them, and which will support all your devices for years to come? While we don’t review routers here at Engadget, we’ve taken a look at some sources we trust to find a few devices that might fit your needs.

Tesla CEO promises a self-driving model for next year

Last night, Elon Musk told the world that Tesla was ready to reveal its “D” on October 9th, as well as preparing us for “something else” to expect along the way. But the CEO isn’t done teasing just yet. In a recent interview with CNN Money, Musk’s let it be known that a Tesla car next year “will probably be 90 percent capable of autopilot,” though he didn’t dive into any specifics about which model(s) this comment was in reference to. “You know, so 90 percent of your miles could be on auto. For sure highway travel,” the Tesla boss added. Such a thing would be possible, Musk said, by combining different sensors with image-recognition cameras, radars and long-rage ultrasonics — which, without a doubt, paints a bright picture for future vehicles from the company. “Other car companies will follow … Tesla is a Silicon Valley company. I mean, if we’re not the leader, then shame on us.”

Flipboard finally arrives for Windows Phone

Have you been frustrated that your Nokia handset hasn’t had the same Flipboard access as your Windows PC and tablet? Well, you’re in luck. The popular reading app has finally made its way to Microsoft’s mobile OS. Outfitting Windows Phone 8.1 devices with at least 1GB of RAM, the software has been retooled specifically for smartphones with easy access to Cover Stories’ highlights, search and sharing options. It’ll come preloaded on the Lumia 830 that’s set to arrive soon, and compatibility for phones with less memory is in the works as well. If your device meets the current requirements though, you can get to downloading right now.

Android L on the Samsung Galaxy S5 [Video]

android-l-galaxy-s5

Ever wondered what Android L would look like on a Samsung Galaxy S5 running TouchWiz, well look no further.

Thanks to an 8-minute preview video of Android L running on the Galaxy S5, we get a glimpse of what TouchWiz will look like on the next generation of Android, courtesy of SamMobile.

With a new lockscreen, revamped notification drawer, and reskinned preloaded apps, Samsung has embraced the Android L design, but still adds some of it’s own somewhat questionable design touches.

The leaked build shown in this video is not available for release just yet due to it’s buggy nature, but what do you think? Drop us a comment below.

Senators warn NFL about resisting blackout policy changes

Detroit Lions v Oakland Raiders

Despite the FCC voting to repeal the NFL’s decades-old blackout protection, the league still has the power to include sellout provisions in TV contracts. However, if it chooses to do so, a pair of US Senators warn that it could lose its antitrust exemption and tax benefits. In a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday, Senators John McCain and Richard Blumenthal urge the league to end the policy that’s “no longer justified in today’s environment” by nixing “rules that punish those same fans.” The Senators have already introduced a bill that ties the NFL’s perks to its complete elimination of the blackout rules in last year’s Furthering Access and Networks for Sports (FANS) Act. “If the NFL fails to show leadership to finally end blackouts once and for all, Congress will be forced to act,” the letter continues. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how Goodell reacts, but he’s got his hands full with a load of other issues, too.

Cyanogen refuses Google’s money in an effort to keep Android ‘open’

For a lot of start ups, winning Google’s interest is the goal. Not Cyanogen. According to The Information, the Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster told shareholders that it recently shrugged off Google SVP of Android Sundar Pichai’s interest in purchasing the company — choosing instead to focus on obtaining a $1 billion valuation to aid in its third round of funding. The company’s grounds for that number, and perhaps Google’s interest for the company, lie with its long-term goal: to become the third most popular mobile ecosystem. Considering the fact that Cyanogen’s third-tier mobile OS is essentially a more “open” version of Android, it’s no surprise the company has Mountain View’s attention.

Even so, dismissing Google’s interest is a pretty bold move — especially considering that the company is now looking for more funding on top of the $30 million it collected last year. There’s confidence there, however: Cyanogen investors are being told that the company has struck a deal with Micromax to build Cyanogen-based phones, echoing its partnership with OnePlus to bake its flavor of Android into the One. It’s still too early to say if Cyanogen’s efforts will pay off in the long term, but the company is definitely on Google’s radar, and that’s something.
