Pre-Paid Verizon Moto G packaging appears, just a $100??

The Motorola Moto G is an extremely attractive device. The price is set perfectly for consumers who want something that is nice, fast and affordable. Judging from what we have heard and seen from around the G+ universe, it is being received very well. It really is a big win for Motorola. With the device already being sold for a $179 base price, it is hard not to get one ‘just because,’  but what if it was less?

Verizon Moto G pre-paidA recent image has surfaced on G+ from Josue Joseph that shows a no contract prepaid packaged Moto G blister package stamped with Verizon. While we don’t have ‘official’ confirmation or announcement from Verizon, it is pretty clear that it is coming.  Josue notes that the price “looks like” just $100 off-contract. Making it even more attractive. If Verizon does pull down the Moto G off-contract for $100, we can see it flying off the shelves in a hurry. Heck, even I would be forced to get one ‘just because’ at that price.

Fitbit app lets you track activity with just your iPhone 5s, no Fitbit device required

Fitbit app lets you track activity with just your iPhone 5s, no Fitbit device required

Fitbit updated its iOS app today, bringing, perhaps most significantly, the ability to track “basic” activity on an iPhone 5s, without the company’s proprietary wearable. Using Apple’s motion-sensing M7 chip, the app’ll track your steps, distance and the number of calories you’ve burned. You can also utilize features like food and weight tracking, fitness goals and add friends on the app by downloading it in the source link below and tapping on the “No Fitbit Yet? iPhone 5s tracks the basics” text. So you can start those New Year’s resolutions now — and, the company no doubt hopes, get in on the FitBit experience before picking up the wearable.

Chromebooks overtake Android tablets and Macs in US business sales

Estimated US retail computer sales

Chrome OS is at last gaining some momentum — among US businesses and schools, anyway. The NPD Group reports that Chromebooks represented 9.6 percent of all computing devices sold through American commercial channels in 2013, or enough to surpass the market share of Android tablets, Windows tablets and MacBooks. Google’s rise put the squeeze on traditional computers, which dropped from 77.8 percent of the commercial space to 63.7 percent this year. NPD researchers don’t believe that the PC is going away, but they note that the most successful companies diversified their gadget lineups. Samsung’s combo of Android and Chromebooks helped it jump to 10 percent share of commercial sales in 2013, while PC-focused builders like HP took a bruising; it’s clear that one-trick ponies won’t thrive in the workplace for much longer.

Nokia wins German injunction banning HTC Android devices

HTC One Mini

Nokia is clearly on a roll in the courtroom as of late — following lawsuit wins in the Netherlands, the US and the UK, the company has landed a German injunction banning all of HTC’s Android-based devices. The ruling lets Nokia provisionally block the sale of the One and other Google-powered hardware that allegedly infringes on a patent for peer-to-peer sharing over Bluetooth and NFC. HTC is expected to appeal the decision; Google is trying to invalidate the patent, but its move won’t come in time to avoid or delay the ban. There won’t be much else the two firms can do in the meantime. As with a similar defeat in March, HTC will have to either change features or strip them out to keep doing business.

Netflix intros cheaper standard definition streaming plan for new subscribers

If you consider yourself both extremely frugal and averse to the luxuries of seeing Hollywood eye candy actors in Super HD, Netflix’s new SD tier could be right up your alley. The streaming service has begun offering a low-end plan for new subscribers only that’ll allow standard definition streaming to one device — that’s right, no simultaneous viewing — for $6.99 per month. We can confirm the plan is indeed now live as it appeared when we attempted to sign up for new service though, as TechCrunch reports, that may not be the case for everyone.

Take note, this recent plan addition is only $1 cheaper than the basic HD tier that lets users stream to two devices at once, making the SD plan’s cost benefit a bit dubious. So, if you’re really counting your pennies and haven’t bothered to upgrade to an HD-capable TV or tablet or phone (which makes us wonder if you even have broadband), then by all means, have at this promo. You’re also probably not into account sharing anyway. And really, that’s what that extra $1/mo is for, right? Right.

Google and Audi to announce Android-based in-car entertainment system?

Android is becoming a part of our everyday life now – we have Android powered phones, tablets, television, refrigerator, and also cars with Android powered entertainment system. It seems Audi is impressed by Android, and they are planning to announce a new in-car entertainment and information system at Consumer Electronics Show next week with Google, reported Wall Street Journal.

“The car is becoming the ultimate mobile device,” said Thilo Koslowski, an analyst at the research firm Gartner Inc. who specializes in advanced in-car electronics. “Apple and Google see that and are trying to line up allies to bring their technology into the vehicle. We are starting to see an uptick of Android use in car makers, starting in Asia and working its way across the world,” said Rajeev Kumar, a world-wide director of business development for Freescale Semiconductor Inc., a large supplier of chips used in cars.

Apple has partnered up with companies like BMW, Mercedes and several others to integrate iPhone and iPod in cars, basically making it a part of the car. It seems Google is looking forward to do that as well, and Audi is their first target. Hopefully in future, we might see cars with Android-based dashboards.

What are your thoughts about it?

Google Hangouts Widget Lands in the Play Store

googlehangoutswidget

An unofficial Google Hangouts widget just landed in the Play Store, and I say unofficial because it isn’t from our Google devs. An XDA developer just released this new widget in the Play Store today, and anyone that used a text message widget, but was unable to utilize it because of the Hangouts integration, can now have it back.

The widget is very clean, and easy to set up. Just do your normal thing when it comes to adding a widget to your homescreen, and everything will be right as rain. Only thing you have to do extra is make sure your notification access has the widget checked. So click the Play Store link below, and let us know how you like it.

NYNE Announces the Aqua IPX7 Waterproof Floating Bluetooth Speaker

Aqua Bluetooth Speaker waterproof IPX7 ratedNYNE has announced a new IPX7 rated floating Bluetooth speaker today that they will be showcasing at  CES 2014. The Aqua is probably one of the more uniquely designed speakers I have seen in some time. It s obviously designed to take advantage of its IPX7 rating with a style that reminds me of a pontoon boat or catamaran. Maybe more like a Tie Fighter. The IPX7 rating gives clears it to be fully submerged for 30 minutes 1 meter underwater. Not that you would hold it underwater and hope to hear anything.

“Aqua answers the need for a portable, high-quality audio speaker that can play music outdoors and withstand the elements,” said Arman Arami, president of NYNE. “With up to 10 hours of playtime, the party can last all day at the beach, pool, lake, campsite, or backyard, even when an unexpected rainstorm hits. Aqua plays music from any Bluetooth-enabled device within a 33-foot range, without a wired or dock connection, so your phone or tablet can stay easily accessible and dry.”

The Aqua is also shock resistant to protect it against accidental falls. Internally there is a 2200 mAh battery to keep you chilling in the pool for approximately 10 hours of playback time. By then you will be a lobster though. The speakers offer close to 10 watts of power with a built-in EQ button with 4 pre-programed settings. It also has volume and power controls and a mic for taking calls if you must. It measures in at 9.5″ x 5.2″ x 1.6″ and certainly looks cool.

Pairing one of these up with an Xperia Z or a waterproof cased up Galaxy S4 and you have a pool party at your finger tips. All your friends will love you and be pretty jealous that you can take your tech to the beach, river, lake and your back yard without fears.

NYNE expects to fully launch the Aqua Bluetooth speaker early in Q2, just in time for summer. Suggested retail pricing puts it at $129.95. We have already set up some time with NYNE to take a closer look at this little guy and see how it really looks, feels and sounds during CES. What do you guys think though?
