Wikipedia adds Draft feature to ease pressure on article writers

Wikipedia logo

Here’s a Wikipedia stat you probably didn’t know: around 80 percent of new contributions to the crowdsourced encyclopedia are abandoned before they’re submitted. The organization thinks a lot of writers get cold feet because, since its creation, Wikipedia has deliberately prevented them from being able to save their articles without publishing them: you either went public or you went home. That’s changing now, as the site has decided to implement a Draft mode that allows work to be saved while still remaining invisible to most search queries. The site’s designers acknowledge that the feature is pretty basic right now, but they promise it’ll be refined over time to allow for collaboration on articles that are still in the draft state. The addition of tools like these make sense given that Wikipedia’s legion of volunteer contributors is reportedly shrinking, leaving its pages more vulnerable to the influence of iffy PR firms, but the organization says it has simply “matured” to the point where it can afford to be more flexible about how new content is created.

Indian phone maker Xolo, is on the verge of releasing it’s most impressive Xolo Q3000 phablet phone to the Indian market. The phone has already leaked online and can be seen on Flipkart, but Xolo has not given any official release. The Q3000 has a most impressive 5.7″ full HD (1920×1080) display and has a screaming 1.5GHz quad-core processor. The graphics are handled by the PowerVR SGX544 and the phone has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, expandable courtesy of a micro sd slot. The back shooter is 13 megapixels with BSI2 sensor. The front shooter is 5 megapixels, which is better than the average front cameras these days. The Q3000 will also be running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

But really, the most impressive part of this phone is that 4000mAh battery. It’s 800mAh larger than that of the Galaxy Note 3 so you’re sure to get some life out of this bad boy. The phone is capable of recording and playback in full 1920×1080 resolution so it makes sense to put some fuel under the hood. As we mentioned above, there is no release date for the Q3000 and pricing is not yet avialable either. But expect Xolo to push this out soon. Hit the link below for source.

[Review] booq Boa shift, graphite Backpack

CES is rapidly approaching and this is the perfect companion…

booq_FeatureImage

Initial Thoughts

The booq Boa shift, graphite tech backpack has a deceivingly simple look. On first glance, it looks like any other backpack. There’s a white accent down the center contrasting the overall dark graphite/black nylon construction. I think the designers purposely designed this backpack to not bring attention to itself as a way conceal whatever tech goodies it would typically carry. Open it up though and start exploring, and you’ll find an entirely different story.

Pockets, Pockets, & Moar Pockets!

When the booq Boa shift is opened, it reveals its unexpectedly roomy interior with quite a few pockets. They’re not only on the inside though, they’re everywhere. Per booq’s site:

External:

  • 2 side quick access slip pockets for plane tickets, mobile phones, cards or pens
  • 1 top-front zipper pocket for miscellaneous quick storage items
  • 2 elastic pockets on shoulder straps for smartphones and music players
Interior:
  • Huge main zipper compartment, ideal storage for paper documents, garments, power adaptor, mouse and other laptop accessories.
  • 1 document slip pocket
  • 5 lining slip pockets
  • 1 large mesh window pocket
  • 4 pen slots
  • Back zipper opening allows access to densely padded laptop compartment and is lined with soft Nylex which won’t scratch your gear.

The laptop compartment is spec’ed to fit a up to a 17″ Macbook or a 16.4″ PC Laptop, but I was able to squeeze my 17.3″ Acer N970 with an extended battery into the pocket and zip that sucker; it was a tight fit, but it worked. Alternatively, the front strap pockets are rather narrow. My HTC One, which has a 4.7″ screen was able to fit, but only without its usual UAG case. I’d say 4.7″ is about the limit of what can fit in those pockets sans case, though Colossus fit in one of the pockets nicely. The two side pockets can fit a typical phone (probably even ones as large as the 5.9″ Oppo N1) and/or external battery, so they’re perfect for the fellow Ingressers out there. I was also able to fit two 10,000 mAh Power Bank external batteries in the small standalone nylon pouch with a foam separator that’s included with the Boa shift without issue. There’s even a detachable key-ring inside the bag for you convenience.

Build

The booq Boa shift, graphite has an outer shell made of 1680 denier ballistic nylon and has a water-repellent coating, which is rather indestructible. The inside of the bag has a herringbone nylon lining as well as Nylex construction, which is super durable, but won’t scratch your devices. For comfort, the part of the bag that rests on your back as well as the shoulder straps have a padded nylon mesh that breathes. The upper handle on the bag is rigid with some type of reinforced construction that makes carrying easy on the hands and won’t dig into or pinch your skin like typically soft strap handles do. Holding it all together are extra heavy-duty YKK zippers that match the strength and functionality of the rest of the bag.

booq-laptop2 booq-laptopbooq-outer-pocket booq-innerOverall Thoughts

What can $150 get you? You could buy a decent phone upgrade, a bunch of external batteries, Angry Birds Star Wars HD from the Play Store 50 times, or a very nice booq Boa shift to put all of your gadgets in. This may seem expensive for a bag, but it’s something that you’ll hold onto for a very long time and similar tech backpacks come with a similar price, so it’s not as ludicrous as some may think. It’ll outlast several of your devices and has a 5-year warranty if it fails. Additionally, all booq bags come with Terraliq, which is a unique ID number and registry to help owners become reunited with lost bags.

It’s durable construction, clever design, and comfortable wear makes the booq Boa shift, graphite the perfect accessory to the technology addict. Its deceptively simple outer design does not draw attention to itself, which may not be for everyone, but I think this makes it less prone to theft. Comparable bags in the market are much flashier and draw attention to themselves with fancy do-dads, so if I were a thief I’d boost one of those before I choosing the Boa shift. Simple. Functional. Durable.

Pros:

  • Simple outer design conceals its precious cargo.
  • Indestructible nylon inner and outer construction.
  • Waterproof-ish.
  • Zipper doesn’t clog and won’t break.
  • 5-year warranty and Terralinq.
  • A billion pockets that can hold the biggest of laptops.
  • Comfortable handle.

Cons:

  • Simple outer design may be too plain for some.
  • $150 may not be for everyone, but it’s competitively priced for similar bags.

OUYA Teases A White OUYA On Its Twitter Account

white ouyaIf the only thing stopping you buying an OUYA is the fact that there is no white option, you might not have a reason not to soon. OUYA has today posted the above picture to its Twitter account saying only “Get ready for it…” presumably hinting that the release of this white OUYA will be in the near future.

The OUYA Android game console has had quite a tumultuous couple of months as it struggled to meet its expected deadlines and fulfill its obligations to the backers who got their Kickstarter campaign off the ground. While news surrounding the console has quietened down recently (no news is good news, right?), we can’t help but feel that the device sporting a Tegra 3 processor is starting to look quite dated compared to some of its Android gaming competition despite its growing library of supported games and its winning price point of $99.

All the same, if you were hoping for a more stylish, white OUYA, you won’t have long to wait. No word on whether this new version will carry a different price tag, but we’ll let you know as soon as we know.

Will you be getting a white OUYA? Let us know what you think about the OUYA.

‘Lovense’ Makes Long Distance Relationships a Whole Lot Easier [NSFW]

lovense

With technology improving by the day, communicating with loved ones is almost at the point of being in the same room with them, even though you are miles away. Video chatting seems to keep getting better and better by the day, but for those out there that might be in a long distance relationship, video chatting might not be enough. I give you…Lovense.

Lovense is a new kind of bi-directionally controlled sex toy to provide the sensation of touch from your significant other (or whom ever) and does so through an app, as well as cleverly designed toys for a man and a woman. Nora and Max are the names of the two different toys, and each person will be able to control what the other one feels in/on that special area from an app on their device. If this isn’t the definition of safe sex, I don’t know what is.

Yes, it is a little out there, but you knew in the back of your mind someone was going to come up with something like this. The app spreads to all platforms, so Android, iOS, and Windows users can utilize it. If you want a visual explanation of how Lovenese works, go ahead and check out the video below. It is “kind of” NSFW, so make sure your kids do not see it.

‘Evasi0n’ iOS 7 Jailbreak Controversy Surrounding Piracy and Chinese Partnership

After the Evasi0n untethered jailbreak was updated for newer iPhones, iPads, and iOS 7.x earlier today, Cydia administrator Jay Freeman noted on his Twitter that he was not informed about a new version of the jailbreak before its release. Beyond that, he also reported that the new jailbreak automatically installs a third party app store named Taig which distributes cracked apps in China.

Following Freeman’s comments, two tweets by developer i0n1c claims that the Chinese company Taig paid the Evad3rs development team “a big pile of money” to release the jailbreak in order to bundle its app store onto devices.

evasi0n_screen2
Now, the Evad3rs development team behind the jailbreak has posted an open letter to the jailbreak community on its website, trying to address the various concerns surrounding the method and emphasizing the safety and security of its users.

The team admitted that it was indeed approached by a company with an offer to include Taig with the jailbreak in China, feeling that it was “well-suited to meet the needs of users for the Chinese market.” The team also notes that users are not locked into Taig, with the program giving users given the ability to uninstall the Chinese app store and install Cydia.

Also addressed was the speculation concerning the possible disclosure of exploits and methods to Taig:

Taig has never asked us to disclose our exploits to them, let alone sell them. We were simply asked to bundle their third-party app store in China in a similar way we bundle and distribute Cydia around the world as an additional App Store, and in a similar way to how previous jailbreaks like blackra1n have bundled non-Cydia stores.

Furthermore, the developers also claim that they were unaware that Taig contained pirated apps upon access, and say they are removing instances of piracy and that Taig had contractually agreed not to serve pirated apps. They say they “will continue to monitor this issue and work to resolve it completely” and that Taig will be removed if it can’t be resolved.

Currently, Evasi0n is available for OS X and Windows as an untethered jailbreak.

Tim Cook Sends Email to Apple Employees Reflecting on 2013, ‘Big Plans’ for 2014

TimCook.png In an email sent to employees today, Apple CEO Tim Cook reflected on the company’s accomplishments throughout the past year, discussing a wide variety of subjects including product releases, humanitarian efforts, and corporate initiatives. Cook also made statements looking toward the next year, stating that Apple has “big plans“ for 2014. The full email has been posted by 9to5Mac.

Team,

This holiday season, tens of millions of people around the world, from all walks of life, are experiencing Apple products for the first time. Those moments of surprise and delight are magical, and they’re all made possible by your hard work. As many of us prepare to celebrate the holidays with our loved ones, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved together over the past year.

First and foremost, we introduced industry-leading products in each of our major categories in 2013, showing the breadth and depth of innovation at Apple. We extended our lead in the smartphone market with iPhone 5s; launched iOS 7, an extraordinarily ambitious project; released OS X Mavericks for free to our customers; introduced the iPad Air and the iPad mini with Retina display; and this week began shipping the Mac Pro from a manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. We also marked our 50 billionth download on the App Store – a milestone no one could have predicted we would reach so quickly.

Together we’ve shown the world that innovation at Apple goes beyond our products to the way we do business and how we give back to our community. This year, Apple raised and donated tens of millions of dollars for important charities and relief efforts like Red Cross aid to typhoon victims in the Philippines, and we continue to be the largest contributor to (PRODUCT)RED, supporting the Global Fund in its fight against the spread of AIDS in Africa. Just a few weeks ago, Jony Ive led an unprecedented effort that brought money and awareness to eliminating the transmission of AIDS from mother to child.

And finally, Apple is standing up for what we believe is right. We know that equality and diversity make our company and our society stronger, so we’ve urged the U.S. Congress to support workplace protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We are also laser focused on our contribution to several environmental initiatives and we will increase our efforts even more in this area in the future.

We have a lot to look forward to in 2014, including some big plans that we think customers are going to love. I am extremely proud to stand alongside you as we put innovation to work serving humankind’s deepest values and highest aspirations. I consider myself the luckiest person in the world for the opportunity to work at this amazing company with all of you.

Happy Holidays,

Tim

Apple is said to be working on a variety of new products for 2014, including both updates to existing products and new product categories. Most notably, the company is rumored to release an iPhone 6 with a larger display that is curved and a 12.9-inch iPad with an ultra high definition screen. Also rumored is an “iWatch” smart watch containing biometrics and iOS device integration, as well the release of a ultra-high definition television set. In terms of software, Apple is also expected to launch OS X 10.10 and iOS 8 in the fall, with updates to programs such as Aperture also possible.

Samsung’s 2014 smart TVs will let you control videos by pointing your finger

Samsung 2014 Smart TV interface

Samsung’s 2014 smart TV lineup may revolve around impressive-looking hardware, but the Korean tech giant has revealed that interface improvements will also play an important role. Its new TVs will support finger gestures that should be more intuitive than the whole-hand commands of this year’s models; you can stop a movie with a spinning motion, for instance. Voice control will also be more powerful. It’s at last possible to change channels or launch apps with a single step, and search results appear in one place. While the gesture and voice upgrades may not be revolutions, they’ll likely be welcome to viewers frustrated with unwieldy TV software.

How would you change Acer’s Aspire V5?

11-inch laptops are tricky beasts, purely because the compromises that make them so portable are almost always the ones that mean you’re better off with a 13-incher. That’s why our reviewer was impressed with Acer’s Aspire V5, a laptop that managed to navigate between the pitfalls and produce a robust and reasonably priced model that should have satisfied plenty of you out there. The question that we’re asking, you see, is that now that you’ve had time to use this hardware, what did you think of it?

China Mobile to Officially Begin iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c Sales on January 17

Apple and China Mobile have officially announced today that the iPhone 5s and 5c will be available at the carrier’s stores as well as Apple retail stores across mainland China beginning January 17, 2014, with pre-registration for both devices beginning on December 25, 2013.

china_mobile_subsidary_iphone5c5s

“Apple’s iPhone is very much loved by millions of customers around the world. We know there are many China Mobile customers and potential new customers who are anxiously awaiting the incredible combination of iPhone on China Mobile’s leading network. We are delighted that iPhone on China Mobile will support our 4G/TD-LTE and 3G/TD-SCDMA networks, providing customers with high-speed mobile service,” said Xi Guohua, China Mobile Chairman.

“Apple has enormous respect for China Mobile and we are excited to begin working together. China is an extremely important market for Apple and our partnership with China Mobile presents us the opportunity to bring iPhone to the customers of the world’s largest network,” said Tim Cook, Apple CEO. “iPhone customers in China are an enthusiastic and rapidly growing group, and we can’t think of a better way to welcome in the Chinese New Year than getting an iPhone into the hands of every China Mobile customer who wants one.”

China Mobile is currently the world’s largest carrier with over 760 million subscribers and is expected to bring many new customers to Apple, significantly increasing the company’s presence in China. Multiple signs of an approaching deal between the two companies have popped up during the final months of 2013, with Apple receiving licensing needed to operate on China Mobile’s TD-LTE standard in September and releasing the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c with TD-LTE support.
