Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo specs and photos surface

This week gave way to both hardware specifications and a leaked photo for a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo. Once rumored as a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 “Lite”, it’s the stripped down version of the popular big-screen experience.

Given the unconfirmed specs, it appears the Note 3 Neo is actually more akin to the Note 2.  Nevertheless, it’s still a respectable device and should find a decent following when it arrives. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo reportedly features a 5.55-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 3100 mAh battery.

Powering the smartphone is a 1.7GHz dual + 1.3GHz quad-core (Hexa) processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. It will be interesting to see how this first of its kind processor performs as compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series. According to SamMobile, it should fall somewhere in the area of a Snapdragon 600 CPU.

There’s no indication yet as to which markets are going to carry the Galaxy Note 3 Neo; it’s possible it won’t come anywhere near the United States.

Mobile World Congress takes place at the end of February where we should look for an Unpacked event or press announcement out of Samsung.

Samsung: cheap OLED TVs won’t be ready for three to four years

Samsung curved OLED TV

We hope you weren’t counting on OLED TV prices coming down any time soon. Samsung’s HS Kim warns USA Today that affordable OLED sets likely won’t be available for another three to four years — a year or two later than he first expected. Manufacturing troubles are keeping prices high, he says. If it’s any consolation, though, Kim believes that 4K TV will reach the mainstream faster than 1080p. A number of broadcasters plan to jump to the higher resolution this year, and Samsung has a slew of content deals that could encourage some early Ultra HD upgrades.

BBC rolls out enhanced ‘Red Button’ features to major Smart TVs

The BBC’s Connected Red Button service promised a new level of interactivity when it launched in the UK a year ago, including news and weather overlays, recommended viewing (curated by actual, real-life humans) and alternative streams during live sports events. The downside was that it was originally only available to Virgin TiVo customers, but the Corporation promised to extend it to more platforms and, finally, this seems to be happening. As of today, owners of Samsung and Sony smart TVs should both have access to a beta version of the service when they press the red button on their remotes (although a few Sony-heads may have already noticed this going live just before Christmas), while LG smart TVs are on track to gain access early this year. A long list of compatible devices can be found at the source link below, but there’s still no sign of any standalone Freesat, Freeview or YouView set-top boxes, which were supposed to get improved Red Button access in 2013.

Fleksy keyboard brings predictive touch typing to the Galaxy Gear (video)

Fleksy has already shown that you could use its intuitive touch keyboard on a smartwatch with the Omate TrueSmart, so it only makes sense that someone saw fit to put it on Samsung’s Galaxy Gear. By default, the only way to enter text into the Gear is through voice dictation, which might not be your thing, especially in a crowded environment. As it turns out however, you can choose to sideload software keyboards like Fleksy, which is available through the regular Google Play store, into the Gear. Fleksy COO Ioannis Verdelis found out about this a few weeks ago from the XDA Developer forums, so he installed Fleksy on his Gear and brought it here to CES for us to see. From a brief hands-on, it seems very similar to the version we used on the TrueSmart. Simply tap in your desired words as best you can, and the tiny predictive keyboard will turn your mangled letters into coherent sentences. We took a brief video of it in action, which you can check out below.

Samsung: “We will go back to the basics” for Galaxy S5

Due by April, the next-gen flagship will debut with a new Galaxy Gear

Samsung, speaking with Bloomberg this week, confirmed that the Galaxy S5 will debut by either March or April. Also due at the same time is a new version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

According to Samsung, the handset maker is taking a “back to basics” approach for the Galaxy S5. Conceding that most customers could not discern the differences between the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4, this year’s model will be more obvious.

Mostly, it’s about the display and the feel of the cover

Additional features that may or may not make the cut for the Galaxy S5 are said to include a fingerprint reader or eye scanner.

As for the wearable tech, Samsung says the Galaxy Gear refresh will feature more advanced functions and will have a less bulky design.

The next-generation Galaxy Note (4) could offer customers a wraparound display when it debuts in the second half of 2014.

“We are targeting consumers who want more professional use and tend to be willing to pay more for handsets”

Brace yourself, we are about to run face-first into the buzzsaw that is the Galaxy S5 rumor mill. As if it weren’t already the subject of much speculation and conjecture, the next two months could crank things up a notch.

Samsung leak points to cut-down Galaxy Note 3 ‘Neo’ with six-core CPU

If you like the idea of a big old pen-equipped Samsung handset but don’t want to spend a bundle on a Galaxy Note 3, you might soon be in luck. GSM Arena has unearthed a sales document that spells out the specs for an alleged Galaxy Note 3 Neo, which seems to recycle many aspects of last year’s Note 2: a 5.55-inch 720p screen, 8-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM and 3,100mAh battery. However, the new device would also pack an unannounced 1.7GHz dual + 1.3GHz quad “hexa” chip, which could be a new Exynos processor variant. It’ll also sport the same design touches as its big brother Note 3, like the slimmer profile, faux leather back and Magazine UX seen on the new Galaxy Note Pro 12.2. That’s assuming the document’s for real, of course — we’ll believe it when we see the skeumorphic stitching for ourselves.

Samsung promises a ‘back to basics’ rethink for the Galaxy S5

Samsung has admitted that the public didn’t see much difference between the Galaxy S III and S4 smartphones and said the S5 would likely pack a substantially different design. Exec Lee Young Hee told Bloomberg that the new flagship will go “back to basics,” adding that “mostly, it’s about the display and the feel of the cover.” It’ll also arrive with a brand new version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which itself will have “more advanced functions” and an improvement to what she called “the bulky design.” Other revelations include a possible eye-scanner in the handset for greater security, though that’s still being studied.

Farther down the road, Samsung said that it’s looking at significant changes for the Galaxy Note 3‘s successor in order to target it at professionals who are “willing to pay more for handsets.” As such, it may pack a three-sided display, like the so-called Youm prototype we saw last year at CES 2013, allowing users to read messages from oblique angles. Finally, Lee revealed that the Galaxy S5 will arrive in March or April after Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Considering we saw the Galaxy S III and S4 around the same period in previous years, however, that’s not a big shocker.

Samsung’s 105-inch curved UHD TV and 85-inch bendable screen hit retail this year

If you dug the 105-inch curved Ultra HD TV and bendable 85-inch UHD screen (above) Samsung debuted this week, we have good news. They’ll both hit retail sometime in the second half of this year, according to the tech giant. If you were expecting pricing info, well, you’re going to have to wait a little longer because we don’t have that just yet. However, it’s going to be at least six months before these sets hit stores, so we suggest you start saving your pennies right about now — unlike other options, we have a hunch that these beauties won’t be cheap.

Apple and Samsung CEOs to meet by February 19th, give peace another chance

Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S

Previous attempts by Apple and Samsung to negotiate a truce in the patent wars haven’t exactly panned out, but they haven’t given up hope yet. The companies’ CEOs have just agreed to attend mediated settlement discussions no later than February 19th, potentially averting a trial in March (and likely future legal action). We’d like to believe that Apple and Samsung will finally reach an understanding, but we’re not optimistic given how long the two have been at each other’s throats.
