Samsung and Cisco agree to share patents, sue less

Tired of endless patent lawsuits? So are Samsung and Cisco. The two companies have entered a patent cross-license agreement, essentially promising not to sue each other for the next ten years. The decade long deal specifically gives the firms access to each other’s patient portfolios and new patents filed during the timespan of the agreement. It’s not all about avoiding the courtroom, though — sharing patents should make it easier for both companies to create new, groundbreaking products without wading through red tape and licensing contracts. “Innovation is stifled all too often in today’s overly-litigious environment,” Cisco’s Vice President of Intellectual Property, Dan Lang, said in a statement. “By cross-licensing our patent portfolios, Cisco and Samsung are taking important steps to reverse the trend and advance innovation and freedom of operation.” That sounds pretty positive from where we’re sitting. If nothing else, the agreement should make it a little easier for Sammy to stick to its five-year injunction hiatus.

Samsung and Cisco sign cross-licencse patent deal

Samsung and Cisco have inked a deal which should lead to more innovation across multiple fronts over the next decade or longer. Like the agreement between Google and Cisco from this week, the two companies will benefit by licensing patents from the other party. This works for existing stuff as well as those patented in the next 10 years. As to what falls under the umbrella remains to be seen; it covers a “broad range of products and technologies”. Our gut tells us this likely centers around the connected home and networking in general.

NYT: Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Gear 2 will be announced in three weeks

As Mobile World Congress approaches, it appears to become more and more evident that Samsung has chosen the Barcelona event later this month as the venue to launch the Galaxy S 5. This morning, the New York Times has confirmed through its sources that this will indeed be the case, and it’s going to be quite a bit different from last year’s Galaxy S flagship launch. Whereas last year’s controversial show featured Broadway-style antics and blatant stereotyping, the NYT reports that “Unpacked 2014 Episode 1,” the launch event, will be much more low-key.

The publication also mentions a few details about the device itself. The GS5 will reportedly feature some design enhancements and spec improvements, such as a fancier camera and better processor (we’d wager that we’ll see a 16MP camera and a choice of Exynos 6 or Snapdragon 805), but it sounds like Samsung plans to dial back the number of new firmware features. Curiously, the same sources tell the Times that the S5 oddly won’t come with a bump in display resolution to Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440); if this is indeed the case, it likely means we’ll be seeing a 1080p screen on two Galaxy S flagships in a row. We find this a bit surprising, but we wonder if supply constraints could be a reason why Samsung is holding off for now. The report also claims that we won’t see an eye scanner this time around.

Finally, the Times reports that Samsung isn’t going to wait for its usual yearly product cycle to launch a new Galaxy Gear — apparently, the second version of the smartwatch is also on the Unpacked agenda just a few months after its predecessor arrived. The product’s quick turnaround would certainly be a huge surprise, but given its relatively poor reception and reportedly low sales, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that the company wants to push out a new and improved version as soon as possible.

Samsung loved its leather-look Note 3 so much it’s revised the Galaxy S 4 design to match

Samsung tends not to hop around when it comes to design language, instead, choosing to gently sail the calmer waters of familiarity. Probably the biggest deviation from those well-worn design notes of late was the leather-look plastic back that adorned the Galaxy Note 3. We certainly preferred it to the recent smooth, fingerprint-friendly affairs found on the Galaxy S III and S 4. It seems the phone giant did too, and has released a new version of the GS 4 in Korea (Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A, if you’re interested) that features the same textured effect on the rear — along with the not-so-needed faux stitching. Oh, and “rose gold” makes a comeback on the metal-look details too! So, while this might be no good to you, with your slippy-slidey OG Galaxy S-whatever, with number five potentially being just around the corner, it could be a suggestion of what it might look like.

Apple and Samsung to spar over iPhone 5, Galaxy Note II at next trial

Perpetual court combatants Apple and Samsung have revealed their final list of allegations ahead of a trial starting March 31st. Though each started with five disputed patents, Samsung only has four now since a multimedia sync patent was knocked out earlier by Judge Lucy Koh. She also gave Apple a summary judgement win on its auto-complete IP, putting it ahead before the trial even begins. As for the rest, it’s worth noting that all of Apple’s patents are related to user interaction, while two of Samsung’s are standards-essential (FRAND) patents — which companies are normally obligated to license out. Samsung did have one point in its favor, however: the USPTO has agreed to take a second look at the validity of Apple’s aforementioned auto-complete patent.

As for the devices accused of infringing those patents, none are very recent models and many aren’t even on the market anymore. However, the historical sales of each will affect the size of any award given by the court if an allegation is upheld. That’s a lot of infringement for ultra-popular models like the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s, which have far outsold disputed models from the previous trial (like Samsung’s original Galaxy S). Other names on the list include the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 from Samsung, along with Apple’s iPads 2, 3, 4 and Mini. Of course, there’s always the upcoming negotiations between company CEOs to avoid all that, but… nah, who are we kidding.

[LEAK] He’s at it again: Eldar Murtazin leaks Samsung Galaxy S5 Specs

samsung galaxy s5 specsNow that we have a set date for what is likely to be the Samsung Galaxy S5‘s announcement, the focus of the media has now turned to what the S5 actually looks like and what hardware are we expecting. Well, if there was anyone who was going to leak us the details regarding this, it was going to be Eldar Murtazin, who has just today tweeted out what the Samsung Galaxy S5 specs are going to be.

If Murtazin’s tweet is to be believed, the S5 will be rocking either a Samsung-made Exynos 6 or a Snapdragon 805 processor with 3GB RAM and a choice of either a 32GB or 64GB storage variant. He also says that the display will be a 5.24-inch, 2560×1440 resolution AMOLED (that’s 2K resolution for everyone interested) and the front and rear cameras will be 3.2MP and 16MP respectively. Rounding out the specs, the battery in the S5 is said to be a monstrous 3,200mAh package, a massive jump in capacity over the 2,600mAh in the S4.

For me, there’s nothing groundbreaking about the specs here except the battery capacity. We had heard that the S5′s battery would be utilizing new technology that would allow it to store more battery capacity with only a minor increase in physical size, but 3,200mAh is a lot bigger than expected and exactly the same size as the Galaxy Note 3′s battery. Given the S5′s smaller screen, this will result in a huge boost in battery power over its predecessor. That is, if this is all true…

What do you think about the Samsung Galaxy S5 specs leaked today? Do you think they are real, and are you tempted? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 revisits the FCC with AT&T-capable LTE

Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 at the home screen

You might not have to sign up with Verizon to buy a cellular edition of Samsung’s Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 in the US. The gargantuan tablet has returned to the FCC, only this time in a variant with AT&T-native LTE and HSPA+ frequency support; it can also handle the big three Canadian carriers. The slate is otherwise much like its Verizon counterpart, although the absence of T-Mobile 3G means that the UnCarrier likely won’t be selling this model, if it sells the Note Pro at all. There’s also no certainty of an AT&T launch, but we can’t imagine that Samsung repeated the FCC approval process just for laughs.

Samsung schedules February 24 Unpacked event for Galaxy S5

Samsung is expected to introduce its next generation of flagship Galaxy S smartphones on February 24. An invitation posted on the company’s press page tells us that the Galaxy S5 will debut on the eve of Mobile World Congress. No, it doesn’t explicitly mention the device by name but we can think of no other reason for that little ’5′ in the upper right corner.

Those not able to make it Barcelona in person are advised to follow along via Samsung’s Youtube account. We should be able to get a virtual front-row seat from the comfy confines of the couch or office chair.
