Samsung launches Galaxy S5 Plus in the Netherlands with Snapdragon 805

samsung-galaxy-s5-plus

A couple months ago Samsung treated Singapore to the Galaxy S5 4G+, a slightly upgraded S5 with the Snapdragon 805 processor, most recently found in the Galaxy Note 4. Today it seems that Samsung is taking orders for this device in the Netherlands, with other markets presumably on the way. The device is officially called the Galaxy S5 and features the same specs as the S5 (2GB of RAM, 16-megapixel camera, 1080p Super-AMOLED display) but with the aforemention Snapdragon 805 under the hood, clocked at 2.5GHz.

The S5 Plus also features the same dust and water-resistant shell, so for those of you holding out for a metal body similar to the Note 4, you’re out of luck. One notable improvement is the increased LTE speeds of up to 225Mbps thanks to that 805. No word on pricing or stateside availability, but it will obviously be more expensive than the companies current flagship. Let us know in the comments if that boost in processing power is enough to pique your interest.

Samsung donating phones to help U.N. combat Ebola

Samsung_Logo_02_TA_CES_2014

Samsung has announced that they are donating 3,000 Galaxy S3 Neo smartphones to the United Nations to help in the fight against Ebola. The donation of the smartphones is part of an aid package that Samsung is providing to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs and will be used in the Humanitarian Connectivity Project. That project is the U.N.’s initiative to provide humanitarian support through utilization of mobile devices.

The smartphones will be used in 60 medical clinics in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, the three hardest hit countries. Some of the Galaxy S3 Neo’s will be loaded up with the U.N.’s Smart Health Pro app so medical professionals can use the smartphones for treatment activities and to collect medical data. Some of the phones will be used by patients who have been quarantined so that they can maintain contact with their families.

In addition to the smartphone donation, valued at approximately $1 million, Samsung is also providing financial support to help with the purchase of hazmat suits in Ghana and for the distribution of hand sanitizers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In South Africa, Samsung is helping with the launch of an Ebola SMS text service.

Galaxy Note Edge to be Launched Thursday in Japan

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Samsung’s funky and clever upcoming device is eagerly awaited by techies everywhere. (Or at least right-handed techies everywhere.) We’ve been waiting patiently to get a launch date for the phablet, and today we learned some new information. Japan will be receiving the device on its largest mobile carrier (NTT DoCoMo). The device will be black only until November, when a white version will be released as well.

The special device and its curved screen will eventually be available stateside sometime this year on all four big carriers, but as of right now, no one but Samsung knows when.

Google’s Nexus 6 gets compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4

nexus_6_vs_galaxy_note_4

This fall, two massive devices will be on the market and consumers will have a very difficult choice to make. Should they go with Google and the Nexus 6 or Samsung and its Galaxy Note 4? Fortunately, you can take a look at a video comparing the two. Carphone Warehouse has both devices on hand for a really good breakdown. Unsurprisgly, the Nexus 6 is a lot bigger than the Galaxy Note 4. After all, the Google device does have a 5.96-inch display compared to its foe’s 5.7 inches.

There is a common ground for the two. The resolution of the displays both equal 2560×1440 and are AMOLED. Inside, Google and Samsung opted for a Snapdragon 805 processor with 3GB of RAM and 3220mAh batteries. They also have 32GB of internal storage; however, Samsung follows its tradition by including a microSD card slot.

Hit the break for the video.

AT&T announces Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 for October 24th

Hey look! Another Samsung device! The less lustrous Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 that launched last summer seems to have been successful enough for Samsung to put in some leg work on creating a follow-up, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 AT&T

The 2014 Mega 2 appears to take some design elements from the Galaxy Note line with that stitched back plate while keeping some of the original Galaxy Mega. As for specs, AT&T was pretty hush hush on the subject. More so pointing out that it has a 8MP camera with 4X digital zoom and a 2,800 mAh battery pushing a quad-core processor on a 6-inch “high-definition” screen. The video below shows some the functions off, like one-handed mode, Dual-Instance (multi-wuindow), interruption free experience and private mode to secure files separately from the device.

Cruising around the web the consensus is stating the screen will be 720p, or 1280 x 720. The processor for the stateside version of this is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 clocked at 1.2GHz and bringing 1.5GB of RAM. It will come with 16GB on-board storage and the usual SD card slot option. While not specifically confirmed from AT&T, it is pretty safe to assume those are correct.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 will be available via AT&T on October 24th. It will retail for $149.99 on a new two-year contract or $474.99 without a contract. That puts the device at $19.80 a month on Next 18 and $23.75 a month on Next 12.

AT&T calls up Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 for October 24

mega_2_soon

Wasting no time in getting the week going, AT&T on Monday announced the upcoming availability of the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2. Expected on Friday, October 24, the handset features a 6-inch HD display and an 8-megapixel rear camera. Additional specifications include a quad-core processor and 2880mAh battery, and Samsung’s custom TouchWiz interface. Present here are features like Private Mode, Ultra Power Saving Mode, and split-screen multi-function.

While this one isn’t quite as full-featured or hardware heavy as the Galaxy Note series, it’s an affordable take on the plus-sized phone. Average user types who don’t have need for a stylus could do much worse than to consider a Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 for their daily driver.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 will sell for $475 outright or $150 with a new, two-year service agreement. Qualified customers can opt for an AT&T Next plan, spreading payments out over a number of months: $19.80 per month with AT&T Next 18, $23.75 per month with Next 12.

As a reminder, AT&T will give customers a $100 bill credit when activating a new or existing line Next plans. The credit offer expires on October 31.

Here’s every device getting Android 5.0 Lollipop so far

Motorola's examples of phones getting Android 5.0 Lollipop

If you’re a die-hard Android fan, you’re probably champing at the bit waiting for that Lollipop upgrade — when will you get it? Are you going to get it? Thankfully for you, a number of companies have already promised to upgrade some of their devices to this candy-flavored OS. Google’s Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10 models are naturally first in line, as are Android One and Google Play Edition hardware; its outgoing Motorola brand is equally on top of things with plans to patch the Moto E, G and X alongside Verizon’s Droid Mini, Maxx and Ultra. HTC and OnePlus don’t have full details, but they’re both pledging to give their recent flagships a taste of Lollipop within 90 days of receiving finished code. NVIDIA and Sony, meanwhile, are being vague. While they’re respectively teasing plans to update the Shield Tablet and the Xperia Z series, they won’t say when just yet.

As for other manufacturers? Well, don’t hold your breath. LG tells TechRadar that it has nothing to say on “if / when” Lollipop will reach the G3, let alone older gear. The upgrade is likely coming, but the statement is far from reassuring. Mum’s the word from Samsung as well, although leaks show that a Lollipopped version of TouchWiz is in the works. It’s also reasonable to expect that relatively large brands like Acer, ASUS, Huawei and Xiaomi are on deck — just don’t be shocked if their older devices don’t make the cut.

Samsung Gear S will have own Plan on Sprint

samsung-gear-s-frontSamsung’s Gear S is going to be the first popular SmartWatch with a 3G connection, so there are a lot of questions to be answered about how the device will be used practically as a separate device on a wireless plan.

It seems that as far as Sprint goes, your Gear S can be used on one of two plans: as a standalone device, and as a Family Share Pack device. Both options cost the same at $10 per month. The Standalone device includes 1000 minutes, 1000 text messages, and 100 MB of data, with a 40 cents/min and 20 cents/msg overage charge. The Family share pack gives unlimited talk and text and shares whatever data package you have.

If you’re connected to your phone via Bluetooth, you won’t be using your messaging or minutes for handling calls or texts. You can also connect to  Wi-Fi to avoid using up your data package when you’re somewhere with the option available.

The other main carriers should follow suit soon and announce plans designed for the Gear S and other standalone smartwatches since Samsung is unlikely to be the only one working on this type of device. Stay tuned for more information about the Gear S, including release date, carrier availability, and pricing.
