BMW wants you to control your car’s features from a Samsung tablet

BMW Touch Command

BMW loves the idea of letting you control your car from mobile devices — so much so that it just teased some especially deep mobile integration at Samsung’s CES keynote. The automaker’s new Touch Command feature (hinted at in last year’s Vision Future Luxury concept) will let you use a Samsung tablet to operate many of your vehicle’s creature comforts. You can adjust the music, climate control and even the ambient lighting without having to reach for the usual in-car knobs or touchscreens. Neither BMW nor Samsung has said much about when you’ll get to try Touch Command for yourself, but here’s hoping that it arrives soon.

Samsung Milk expands into VR and TV

Milk_VR

Last year Samsung gave Galaxy users access to its Milk Music and Milk Video apps.  In large part, both apps were received well due to their clean design, premium feel and excellent content.  Samsung announced today that those two apps will expand onto their TV’s as an app and will be released this Spring.

Samsung also announced that they will be released Milk VR, an app specifically designed for the Galaxy Note 4 and Gear VR.  According to the press release, the Milk VR app should be released sometime today so for the few of you who got your hands on the Gear VR, you might need to check the Galaxy App store a couple times today to be the first to get the app.  Samsung has committed to released new content for Milk VR five days a week.  Content availability will decide whether or not VR is just a fad or is a success, as I have tried a few apps with Google Cardboard and loved it but content was highly limited so i hope Samsung delivers on its promise.

Content through Milk VR will be available in 4K and 2k resolution giving users the best possible viewing experience.

Got Milk? Samsung Wants You to Have It on TV and the Web

Samsung-milk-music-ces-2015

Samsung’s Milk Media products will live in the shadows no more. Its Milk Music service, a station-based streaming client akin to Pandora, was launched in March 2014 exclusively on Samsung phones.

At CES, however, Samsung, announced its intention to bring Milk far and wide, and Milk Music is now available for download on Samsung TVs. A web player will be launched this spring.

Not to be outdone by its aural sibling, Milk Video, a video aggregation app (think of one place to view all the videos you see across dozens of platforms), was launched on mobile phones in November and will come to Samsung TVs in a few months.

While there’s no word yet on the phone apps ending their exclusivity on Samsung devices, the web music player will be available to the general public, independent of one’s ownership (or not) of a Samsung phone. As a Samsung exclusive, Milk Music was initially launched without ads in an attempt to woo people over to using Samsung devices. Samsung has stated that the app will not always be ad-free, which one could assume might correspond with the web interface launch.

One might also surmise that with new Samsung TVs shipping with the Tizen OS, this marks the beginning of Samsung’s long march toward independence from Android. Only time will tell.

Prepare yourselves for Milk.

Samsung’s CES 2015 event liveblog

The Samsung booth at the CES show held in Las Vegas

CES. It’s a massive playground full of electronics, and no one has a presence larger than Samsung. The manufacturer makes gadgets from appliances to cellphones to speakers, and of course increasingly massive HDTVs. It also tends to take an …odd approach to these kinds of presentations, leading to surprises like Michael Bay’s sudden exit last year. Who knows what we’ll see in 2015, but come along for the ride right here when the event starts at 5PM ET.

Samsung Galaxy S6 rumored to ship with Sennheiser earbuds

sennheiser

According to an exclusive report by Sammobile, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is expected to ship with Sennheiser earbuds.  In a time when many phone manufacturers are cutting out accessories that ship with phones, especially earbuds, it’s a pleasure to know Samsung is going to offer a premium set of earbuds with the next flagship release.

How each of us listen to music is completely up to each individual, but it is pretty much universally accepted that Sennheiser knows how to reproduce sound quality through their headphones and earbuds.  Samsung is one of the few Android device manufacturers that still gives a free headset with a purchase of its device, although my Note 4 notably did not have an included set up earbuds which was rather disappointing.  A marriage between Sennheiser and Samsung seems like a great fit especially when you consider what Apple might do with the Beats line of headphones.

It’s not known whether or not the Sennheiser earbuds will ship with all Galaxy S6 devices, or if it will be a limited edition.  I am hoping they offer the earbuds to everyone who purchases the S6 and lead the pack on bringing back earbuds for all phone manufacturers.

Verizon bringing the Galaxy Note Edge on Jan 8, Nexus 6 launching mid-Feb

gnoteedge-vz

The uniquely designed Galaxy Note Edge will make its way to Verizon Wireless on the 8th of January, according to a new leak. Big Red will also bring the Motorola Nexus 6 to its retail outlets, but not until mid-February, the leak says.

Pricing for the Galaxy Note Edge has been set at $799.99 off contract or $33.32 per month via Verizon Edge. You can also get it with a two year contract agreement for $399.99, which is quite a lot to pay for a contract device.

There’s no word on the pricing of the Nexus 6 yet, but it should be on par with what we’ve seen from the likes of Sprint and AT&T, which is somewhere around the $299.99 mark. It is important to note that there’s no real incentive to get the Nexus 6 from Verizon considering that activated SIM cards already work with the device.

But if you’re planning to activate a new account with the Nexus 6 and don’t mind relying on Verizon for future software updates, getting it from the carrier shouldn’t be a big concern.

We’ll keep a close eye on Verizon for more details on the arrival of the Nexus 6. But if you’re in the market for a phablet and don’t mind experimenting with the form factor, you might want to check out the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge which will be available starting Thursday.

Tipster: Verizon to launch Note Edge on Thursday, Nexus 6 in mid-February

samsung galaxy note edge review aa (23 of 26)

Verizon is in a rather unique position with its dependence on CDMA network standards, for most phones – namely those designed for the global market – make use of GSM technology. While the carrier has had some nice exclusives in the past (see the Motorola Droid line, for example), those customers who want more international products are often out of luck. Such was the case for Verizon and the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. Until now, that is.

Thanks to a tipster, Phandroid has obtained a leaked screen capture allegedly from Verizon, and indicating the Note Edge will launch on the 8th. The source – which has supposedly provided legitimate information on a number of instances – has also claimed that the curved wonder will cost $399 on a 2-year contract, and $33.32 per month on Verizon’s Edge installment-based payment plan. The device can also be had for $799 off-contract (some $70 less than the commitment-free T-Mobile version). It is worth pointing out that one of the two Japanese variants carrying the Edge (KDDI au) is in fact, CDMA-based, and thus Samsung has apparently decided to make further use of the modified internal antenna for a larger market.

The titular tipster has also indicated that the Nexus 6 won’t be launching on Verizon until sometime in mid-February, thus ensuring an even longer wait for those who want to buy on-carrier. (The unlocked Nexus 6 can still be used on Verizon’s network, for reference).

Please note that as Verizon itself has not confirmed either of these two leaks, some degree of skepticism should be accepted in the event the phablet doesn’t edge itself into stores this Thursday.

Samsung shows unidentified handset in KNOX tutorial video

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Back_Samsung_Logo_TA

In December, Samsung released a tutorial video for its My KNOX app. The video stayed under the radar until now because of the handset seen running the software. There is no indication as to what exactly the handset is. Clearly, it is neither the Galaxy S 5 nor is it the Galaxy Note 4. So, is the handset in the video a render of the upcoming Galaxy S 6? Perhaps. The bezels are extremely thin and the overall design leans more towards the Galaxy S 4 rather than last year’s flagship. Of course, chances are that the handset is merely a render made strictly for the video.

Hit the break for the video.

Does this metal chassis belong to the Samsung Galaxy S 6?

samsung_galaxy_s_6_alleged_metal_chassis_010415

While the Galaxy S 6 is not going to debut this week at CES 2015, leaks regarding its design will. A French media outlet obtained images of what is allegedly the metal chassis for the upcoming Samsung flagship. The company is finally moving away from designs that are predominantly plastic in favor of metal, giving a more premium feel. The metal chassis has various cutouts for items such as the camera, speaker, and antennas.
