Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge to offer two edge displays, report says

The sixth generation Samsung Galaxy S series smartphone will come with a variant known as the Galaxy S6 Edge. At least that is what the chatter has been as of late. New reports stemming from SamMobile indicate that the alternate take on the flagship will include a display that overlaps the side of the device. You know, like the Galaxy Note 4 Edge which was announced last fall. Actually, it gets better.

According to the latest round of gossip, the Galaxy S6 Edge will actually include two edge displays, one on each side.

First of all, you will have the ability to activate the main edge panel on the right or left curve, depending on your primary hand. Then there’s Glance Lighting, which will light up the Edge area when you receive a call or notifications, when you turn your device over. Also, you will have an option to choose favorite contacts and an ability to assign specific colours to them. So, calls and notifications from important people will show the designated color lighting on the edge area.

We’ll be interested in seeing how much effort Samsung puts pushing this particular model. Will it be a limited release or might Samsung get aggressive with its features and selling points? We might not have to wait long to find out; Mobile World Congress is not far off and we suspect Samsung will host an Unpacked event to announce the handset(s).

Report confirms two-edge Galaxy S 6

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_CESWith everyone a buzz about the Galaxy S 6 moving toward a less Touchwiz filled direction, the rumors of Samsung making an “edge” variant of the Galaxy flagship have somewhat died down. That said, it looks to be all but confirmed as in the works as a new report from SamMobile suggests the S6 Edge is definitely a go. Just like the Note Edge, the S6 Edge will feature less prominently curved edges on both sides of the display. However, the S6 Edge isn’t the official name of the device.

The SM-G925 will feature the same panel-based system the Note Edge sports, however Samsung is adding new features to make the S6 Edge a bit more unique. Things like Finance, news, sports, briefings, pedometers, favorite apps and contact panels will be available plus other items will be downloadable from Samsung’s app store. Other items light a night clock and an Express Me panel will be available, too.

Unlike the Note Edge, where right handed people can easily take advantage of the edge (unless you want to turn the device upside down) both ride and left handers will  have an easier time using whichever edge they choose. Another feature will include Glance Lighting that will allow just the edge to light up when a call or notification comes in. Calls and notifications from certain people can be colored as well, allowing the edge to reflect those colors.

That said, until it’s official all rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. But given Samsung’s track record (and its love of bells and whistles) I’d say most, if not all, of these feature have the potential of popping up.

Samsung Galaxy S6 variant will have a double-edged display

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge was a wonderfully innovative product. This wasn’t to say that it was perfect – the lack of optimization during general use was disappointing – but the mere fact that Samsung tried something new, and that it was interesting, was intriguing enough. It looks like Samsung is going to continue in […]

Xperia Z4 and Galaxy S6 supposedly ‘secretly’ demoed at CES 2015

xperia z4

According to a known leaker, Sony and Samsung had some tricks up their sleeves when it came to their unreleased flagship devices at CES 2015 this year. Apparently both companies were holding secret showings of the Galaxy S6 and Xperia Z4 to stakeholders behind closed doors.

I am taking this one with a massive pinch of salt and suggest you do too. Why would two companies bring their unannounced flagship devices to the biggest tech show of the year, full of cameras and media? Unless of course they wanted them to get leaked…

Although saying that, Samsung did hold secret showings of the Galaxy S5 behind closed doors at CES 2014, so who’s to say they didn’t do it again?

Thoughts?

More details about Galaxy S6 edge’s special features surface

samsung galaxy note edge review aa (24 of 26)

We’ve heard more than one report suggesting that Samsung is preparing a version of the Galaxy S6 that will feature an edge display. More recently, there’s even been talk about how this model will have two edges, instead of the single edge found on the Galaxy Note Edge. We have to wonder, what makes two edges better than one? If both edges are shaped right, it could certainly make gripability a little better than the Note Edge, but surely there’s more to the story than that. Thanks to SamMobile, we might have at least a few minor details about how the Galaxy S6 “edge” variant’s special software features.

As you’d expect, all the Note Edge features on the edge panel will return, including a sports and news panel, briefing panel, pedometer panel and more. You’ll also now have the option to activate the main edge panel from the left or right curve. Moving beyond that, reportedly the Galaxy S6’s edge model will also have a new featured called Glance Lighting. In short, Glance Lighting lets up the edges when you receive a call or notification. You’ll also be able to assign contacts and assign specific colors to them, having easy access to these callers on both edges when in the dialer.

While we’d like to list even more, that’s all SamMobile has for us at this time and there’s really no other rumors floating around just yet that bring any more clarity to how exactly Samsung will utilize the dual edges to their fullest. With that in mind, we’d love to ask our readers what special features they’d like to see from a dual-edge GS6. Can you think of any unique ways that Samsung might utilize two curved edges?

Samsung Galaxy S6 will not have a metal unibody design: Rumor

image

Reports in the past have suggested that Samsung will utilize a metal unibody design on the Galaxy S6 much like what we saw on the Galaxy Alpha and the subsequently launched A series of smartphones.

A new report now states that Samsung might have ditched these plans altogether, in favor of something more interesting. According to a Samsung official quoted by a Korean source, the Galaxy S6 will pack a metal chassis, but the back will consist of a glass layer much like on Sony’s Xperia smartphones and the LG Nexus 4.

This also means that the battery on the smartphone will not be removable, which might disappoint a few Samsung fans. But it seems like a step in the right direction for the company given that we’ll be treated to an all new design. The same materials will also be used in the Galaxy S6 Edge according to the report.

What do you think of a Galaxy S flagship with a glass back panel in place of plastic?

Samsung’s circular display smartwatch will feature wireless charging

SAMSUNG CSC

A new report has revealed that Samsung’s upcoming circular display smartwatch will come equipped with wireless charging functionality, much like the Moto 360. This is not to say that the device won’t require a cradle, but merely that it will be compatible with a wide range of wireless charging stations.

This smartwatch codenamed Orbis, could be running on Tizen rather than Android Wear which is one of the biggest concerns we have. Barring that, the wearable should match all our expectations and will take the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R head-on.

Samsung’s current range of chargers for its Gear smartwatches aren’t all that great, so this will be a refreshing change with the Orbis. We’re still waiting for confirmation on this report from Samsung and we hope to learn more as the days progress.

Wireless charging is almost a prerequisite on wearables given the convenience factor. We’re hoping Samsung will go with the Qi standard so that third party manufacturers can build accessories for the device in the future.
