AMOLED Burn-in Fixer for Nexus 6 and other AMOLED display devices

Burn-ins on your AMOLED screen are the worst. They are just absolutely terrible. There is nothing worse than seeing a ghost on your phone for all eternity. The good news is that you don’t have to site idly by while your OCD goes crazy.

One Brendon Sled has taken it upon himself to fix your devices unfortunate screen. AMOLED Burn-in Fixer is an app designed to be effective and easy to use.

The basic idea behind the app is to invert the colors of your status bar and/or navigation bar (depending on which location is showing signs of burn-in) to reverse the eye sore.

There are three easy steps to fixing these burn-ins. Install, Test and Fix. It is that simple.

1) Install

Step one, install the app from the Google Play Store for free. You can either search “AMOLED Burn-in Fixer” or make use of the widget at the bottom of this post.

2) Test

Step two, test your screen for signs of burn in. You just follow the yellow brick road on this one. Tap the “Test Burn-in” tab, then select “Hide UI”. You will be presented with a solid gray background that will reveal any burn-ins to you. This will most likely be around the status bar and navigation bar areas as previously stated.

3) Fix

Step three, fix all the things! Once you determine the areas that require doctoring, go back to the “Fix Burn-in” tab and select the locations you require. Then, follow the instructions on screen. Enable inverted colors in your system settings and hide the app settings.

Everything is simple and painless. You just have to leave the inverted screen up until the signs of any burn-in are reduced to your satisfaction.

Unfortunately, the app only installs on Lollipop devices.

New Snapdragon 810 supposedly to arrive in March

The Wall Street Journal reports that Qualcomm is working on a new version of the Snapdragon 810 for March. This is in response to the overheating issues of the current Snapdragon 810.

If Samsung does include a processor other than its Exynos in the upcoming Galaxy S6, it is likely to be the 810. Talk Android tells that some analysts have said that Samsung will release the S6 in Korea on time probably running the Exynos. The company will delay it in other markets in order to use Snapdragon’s updated processor.

Some blogs are interpreting this to mean that Qualcomm is making a version of the Snapdragon 810 specifically for Samsung, but that of course has not been confirmed.

Qualcomm to deliver updated version of the Snapdragon 810 in March

Qualcomm_Logo_01_TA_CES_2014

The saga regarding the Snapdragon 810 and overheating issues continues. Will Samsung use the Snapdragon 810 in the Galaxy S 6 is one of the biggest questions this year. There have been reports indicating that Samsung would go exclusively with the homegrown Exynos, and others indicating that Samsung could never drop Qualcomm completely.

Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Qualcomm has worked around the heating issue and will deliver a new version of the chip to Samsung in March. Some analysts have already predicted that Samsung will launch the S6 in Korea on time, but delay it in other markets because of this very reason.

Some blogs are taking this news as in Qualcomm has made a special modified version of the 810 specifically for Samsung, but that might not be true. This report seems to indicate that Qualcomm has made the necessary changes to the chip, which would be used by all manufacturers.

I keep saying this story will be interesting. In fact, it could be the biggest story of the year. Samsung can’t afford any mishaps with the Galaxy S 6, and Qualcomm’s year is dependent on the 810. If this goes sour, Qualcomm might have a hard time digging out of this mess.

Samsung Debuts Gear VR Films at Sundance

sundance_1014 Amongst the independent art films and critical hits showcased at the Sundance Film Festival last week, there was a different kind of visual experience showed off to the masses. Samsung’s Galaxy VR brought virtual reality to the guests at the festival with three experiences, all created by Felix & Paul Studios.

The first short is called Herders, and features Mongolian pastoral herders—one of the last remaining nomadic cultures. The viewer gets to see 7 minutes of life in the herder’s shoes. The second is called Wild- The Experience and features some star power. Reese Witherspoon stars as her character from Wild as you share an intimate 3 minute long moment between her and her ghostly mother. The last film is called Strangers with Patrick Watson, and features the musician and his Montreal studio on a wintery day. Although the films aren’t long or looking to take home any awards, Samsung’s inclusion in the festival at least shows how virtual reality is making progress in its move to the mainstream. Samsung-made chips tipped to power the majority of Apple’s next iPhone

Samsung will reportedly power the majority of the next-generation iPhone according to Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper. The report says that the Korean company will claim 75 percent of processor chip production for Apple’s next smartphone: Samsung one of a few companies that have the scale to provide high-end processors in the numbers that Apple needs for its iPhones. The Korean company was the one responsible for crafting the A7 SoC powering the iPhone 5S two years ago, although an apparent exclusive deal with TSMC meant that wasn’t involved in Apple’s two new phones in 2014. It’s unlikely that Samsung and Apple are all-of-a-sudden BFFs, but, well, business is business. We’ve reached out to both companies for a response.

Sonim XP7-29

This week was all about rumors, as a steady stream of details about Samsung’s and HTC’s next flagships trickled out. We have a good idea of what to expect from the One M9/Hima, with key details including a 20MP camera, larger battery, and an iterative design. Samsung did a little better at keeping the Galaxy S6 under wraps, but we still got a few juicy tidbits about the phone’s design and specifications. In other news, the Snapdragon 810 was in the spotlight, WhatsApp launched its first desktop client and banned 3rd party clients, Google’s plan to become a carrier leaked, and Cyanogen’s CEO revealed his vision of a Google-free operating system.

Inside AA HQ

It was a quiet week behind the scenes at AA HQ, with few public-facing changes, but quite a lot of work going on in the background. We’ve made some changes to the AA homepage, replacing the “hero menu” with a carousel showcasing our most recent videos. Our YouTube team is doing such a great job churning out great videos, that we feel this change will bring you more value in the long run.

We’re also ramping up our sister sites SoundGuys.com and TabTimes.com, with more news coverage and featured pieces, and adding some team members to bring you great content. We still have a long way to go with these properties, but we’re confident we can make them reference websites in their respective niches, just like AA is your source for all things Android.

Survey finds 50% of phones activated last quarter came from Apple, 26% from Samsung

cirp_phone_brand_share_of_activations_q4_2014

Apple trumped all other smartphone manufacturers last quarter based on consumers activating a device. The usual Android foes were all far behind Apple with Samsung leading the way. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) conducted a survey with five hundred subjects in the United States and aimed to find which phone brands were most popular among activations. The devices, both old and new, were activated between October and December of last year.

Samsung trailed Apple by 24% and that was the closest any company came to catching the clan in Cupertino. After that, the numbers dropped off significantly. The third place company was LG with 11% and Motorola finished fourth at 4%. Rounding out the bottom was HTC (2%), Nokia (2%), Amazon (1%), and “other” with 4%. BlackBerry, who may or may not be facing an acquisition in the near future, had no activations from the survey.

Josh Lowitz, the co-founder of CIRP, explained that the loyalty of Apple customers is far greater than that of Samsung and LG’s. He said:

“iPhones drew from loyal Apple customers, with 86% of buyers upgrading from an older iPhone. Samsung and LG saw far lower loyalty rates, with 25% of Samsung owners and 18% of LG owners who activated a phone in the quarter switching to an iPhone.”

Samsung to use their own camera module in the Galaxy S 6

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Back_Camera_Lens_Heart_Rate_Monitor_Closeup_TA

Rumors have the Galaxy S 6 sporting a 20 MP main rear camera along with optical image stabilization (OIS), but that’s not all that surprising. What might be surprising is the fact that Samsung is going to use their own camera module.

Samsung has been using Sony modules for the past few flagship phones so this is a major change. This news comes from a report in which Korean analysts were talking about Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEM) in that they will benefit from a 20 MP module for smartphones that will be available during the 1st half of the year when the Galaxy S 6 will be released.

It should also be noted that it was reported over a year ago that Samsung was working on a 20 MP camera for smartphones and it would become available towards the end of 2014. Although a little later, this does line up.

Samsung has been one of the leaders when it comes to picture quality so let’s hope the trend continues with their own module.

LG Electronics says no heat issues with new Qualcomm processor

You may have been aware of a comment Samsung made when it came to the new Qualcomm 810 processor regarding the chip overheating during testing, in which LG have no replied denying any such claim.

The new Snapdragon 810 processor is powering the curved-display LG Flex 2, which LG say has had no heat issues during its internal tests.

“I am very much aware of the various concerns in the market about the (Snapdragon) 810, but the chip’s performance is quite satisfactory,” Woo Ram-chan, LG vice president for mobile product planning, told reporters at a press event for the company’s G Flex2 smartphone.

Samsung have insisted on issues with the chip and will instead opt for their own manufactured processor in their next Galaxy S device.

Could it be something else attributable to the heat of the chip in Samsung devices, or are the company simply trying to big their own chip up?
