Samsung’s NX500 camera gives last year’s model a stylish, compact makeover

If you liked the sound of Samsung’s NX1 camera last year, which delivered 28-megapixel stills alongside 4K video, how about its stylish new sibling, the NX500? Looking a whole lot more desirable, the specifications inside haven’t actually changed all that much: you’ll find the same APS-C sensor, flippable AMOLED display, an ISO range up to 51,200 and a heavy serving of connectivity options including WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth. Inside the NX500, you’ll also find a new DRIMeV imaging processor, which Samsung reckons is much faster than the predecessor — and should result in better images in a lot of ways.

Thanks to the new chip, we’re also promised better color reproduction, better noise reduction and heck, better image quality. However, barring the quality of the images themselves, the NX500 delivers and all-round more attractive look compared to the NX1. Better ergonomically shaped (and sized), the design steers at least slightly closer to something you might see from Fujifilm, and less like the nondescript DSLR body that Samsung’s NX1 was housed inside. The camera will land in brown, black and white color options starting mid-March 2015. You’ll need $799 to pick up the camera, which will also come with optical image-stabilizing 16-50, f3.5-f5.6 power-zoom lens — which sounds good to us.

Possible Galaxy S 6 shows up on celebrity Instagram page

caroline stanbury galaxy s 6In what may or may not be an intentional leak, it looks like the Galaxy S 6 is being used by reality star Caroline Stanbury from Bravo’s show, Ladies of London. It makes for an odd partnership if Samsung did indeed give her a pre-release device to use leading up to the official unveiling, but it wouldn’t be the first off the wall partnership Samsung has made.

In several of Caroline Stanbury’s latest Instagram photos, she’s clearly using a Samsung device that doesn’t quite look like anything else on the market. There are some similarities to the Alpha line, but the sizes don’t completely match up there. This might just be our first glimpse of the S 6 in the wild.

Whether or not she’s using Samsung’s latest and greatest is up for debate, but we’ll only have to wait until March 1st before Samsung makes it official, anyway.

Micromax dethrones Samsung to become the biggest smartphone brand in India

As per the latest report from Canalys, Micromax has left Samsung behind to be the top smartphone manufacturer in India. The home-grown manufacturer managed to achieve the feat in Q4, 2014. According to the report, about 21.6 million smartphones were sold in India during Q4, 2014, and 23 percent of these smartphones were priced under INR 6,000 while […]

Samsung India scoffs at report that Micromax has usurped the throne

samsung_hq_picture1

Issuing a statement of rebuttal against research firm Canalys, the Samsung India division seeks to set the record straight that no other company has bested Samsung in India.

Samsung India had a lot of strong words, and data, to back up its refutation of the Canalys report. The report had claimed that Micromax had made such strides in Q4 of 2014 in India, that the vendor now possessed 22% of the market share compared to Samsung’s 20%.

Samsung claims these figures are completely bogus and gives a quote from Asim Warsi, Samsung India’s Vice President of Marketing in Mobile business. “Our volume market share in the smartphone market in the year was 35.7%, which is more than double than that of the next player, while our value share was 40.2%, which is more than four times the next player. The GfK data is based on actual retail sales in 50,000-plus population cities.”

The GfK data Warsi refers to is from a different research firm that Samsung has relied on for its India market analyses.

The original news of Micromax surpassing Samsung was reported on by BGR, which you can view here. BGR is also reporting on Samsung’s response, which you can view in the source link below.

Samsung mass producing the industry’s first combined DRAM and eMMC ePOP memory package

Samsung Mass Producing ePop Memory

Samsung has announced that it has begun mass production of the industry’s first ePOP memory, which could result in cost and space savings in future high-end smartphone production.

ePOP stands for embedded package on package. Samsung’s design combines 3GB LPDDR3 DRAM volatile memory and 32GB eMMC non-volatile storage into a single package. eMMC memory already combines the flash memory and required controller into a single module. The 3GB LPDDR3 DRAM operates at an I/O data transfer rate of 1,8666Mb/s. Essentially, Samsung’s ePOP memory is a one stop shop for all your mobile memory needs.

What makes this particularly important for smartphone design is that the new all-in-one package reduces the size taken up by various memory components. The entire package fits into a 15mm x 15mm (225mm2) area, rather than two separate chips that can take up over 374.5 square millimetres. Furthermore, the ePOP memory can also be stacked on top of typical mobile processor packages, to save on additional space.

Samsung ePoP memory sollution

Samsung suggests that its ePoP memory is suitable for both high-end smartphones and tablets. The company also has a similar single-package solution for wearable devices.

Samsung’s semiconductor business turned a healthy profit from mobile memory sales last year and its new package could turn out to be an equally good earner for the company.

Micromax is now the biggest smartphone vendor in India

micromax logo

Research firm Canalys has released its findings for Q4 2014 smartphone shipments in India. The data shows that Micromax has now surpassed Samsung to claim top spot in the country, as its smartphone shipments reached 4.6 million units in the previous quarter.

Overall sales in the region surged 90 percent year on year to reach 21.6 million smartphones in the last quarter. Micromax accounted for 22 percent of smartphone sales in India in Q4 2014, while Samsung’s 4.4 million units grabbed 20 percent of the regional sales. Karbonn and Lava followed behind in third and fourth place, accumulating 2 million and 1.8 million units respectively. However, sales from other retailers leapt up two million units between the third and fourth quarter, reaching 9 million in total in Q4. The Indian smartphone market is still very diverse, with a number of low-cost players all vying for market positions.

India smartphone sales Q4 2014

Canalys also estimates that nearly a quarter of smartphones sold in India were priced at under $100, while 41 percent of sales fell into the $100-$200 category. However, Samsung’s Tizen powered Z smartphone, which costs just $92, seems to have received a frosty reception. Micromax has done a particularly good job at “continuing appeal to mobile phone users upgrading to smartphones”, according to Canalys, but its latest Cyanogen powered Yureka is facing increased competition from other low-cost brands, such as Xiaomi and Motorola.

However, Samsung disagrees with Canalys’ report. Instead, the company quoted a report from research firm GfK, which claims that Samsung’s volume market share was 34.3 percent in Q4 2014, substantially higher than Canalys suggests. Furthermore, Samsung claims that its market share is “more than double” that of Micromax.

“Our volume market share in the smartphone market in the year was 35.7%, which is more than double than that of the next player, while our value share was 40.2%, which is more than four times the next player.” – Samsung

It’s tough to know who to believe, especially with such a large discrepancy between the estimates. We saw a similar situation last year, where different research firms again posted conflicting results for Micromax and Samsung. The true figure probably lies somewhere between the two.

India’s booming handset market is a new gold rush for savvy smartphone brands and there’s clearly plenty of competition between the regional players and the big global brands.
