Samsung brings Tizen to Bangladesh, says it was well received in India

Samsung-Z1-Tizen-for-India

Samsung has finally begun pushing out its Tizen operating system for smartphones this year, which started with the launch of the Z1 in India a few weeks ago. Despite indications that the Z1 was off to a slow start, Samsung is confident enough in Tizen’s progress to launch the Z1 in a second country – Bangladesh.

In a press release, Samsung states that the Z1’s launch in India was a success, by its measurements, and that the handset was “well received” in the region, despite the increasingly competitive nature of the local market. The company goes on to tout the benefits of the lightweight custom operating system, its broad local language support and packet data compression, among others.

The Z1 is priced at around just $95 and features low end specifications quite typical of its price point. The handset comprises a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 768MB RAM, 4GB internal memory, 3.15 megapixel camera and a 1,500mAh battery.

Bangladesh’s smartphone market shares many similarities to India’s, with a relatively low rate of smartphone penetration and a growing demand for low cost, internet connected devices. Therefore, Samsung is to retain its focus on low-cost hardware, targeting the Z1 at first time smartphones users looking to hop online. Abroad, Samsung also has plans for Tizen as a cross-platform OS for wearables, SmartTVs, and home appliances.

With 150 million potential untapped consumers in the country, it isn’t hard to see why Samsung is interested in this emerging market. The Samsung Z1 was released in Bangladesh on February 3rd.

New trademark applications reveal the Samsung S6 edge is in the works

samsung_galaxy_s6_edge_trademark_kipris

Amidst all of the leaked images and information about Samsung’s forthcoming flagship devices, some new information from the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) reveals some more concrete data about Samsung’s plans. The filings with KIPRIS are applications for trademark protection for the “Galaxy S6″ and the “S6 edge”. While Samsung may just be engaging in some proactive planning, this seems like a pretty good sign that the company is planning to follow a similar marketing strategy with their Galaxy S line of devices that they introduced with the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge released last fall.

The fact that Samsung’s next flagship smartphone will go by the name Galaxy S6 is no surprise and is consistent with their naming convention for the last couple models. The name for a rumored device that will have one and maybe two auxiliary screens on the side or edges of a device is close to what most people have been calling it anyway, but there are a couple noteworthy issues with the trademark. First is the absence of the word “Galaxy” as part of the trademark. The second item of note is the use of all lowercase for “edge”. The all lowercase edge is probably just some marketing idea to try to be a little bit different. It is not clear though why Samsung may not have included Galaxy in the name for the S6 edge device.

Latest leak suggests the Galaxy S6 will be just 6.91mm thin

galaxy s6 leak schematic (2)

These days it seems like every hour is met with another rumor, purported leak, or claim about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6, or the still-don’t-know-if-it-exists Galaxy S Edge. If one were to be pinching all the salt sprinkled, they would have chronic hypertension already. All we actually do know is that Samsung will unveil the S6 on March 1st, Samsung has sent an MWC invitation with a clearly curved creation, and that Samsung has in fact, patented a dual Edge display.

The latest in the stream of might-be-possibly Galaxy S6 leaks are actual design sketches that offer the clearest look yet at what might possibly be the upcoming flagship.

galaxy s6 leak schematic (1)

As you can see, the device pictured is to be only 6.91mm thick, which would make it very trim and slim indeed. Other notables include the volume buttons which are now separated, and the rounded edges. There also appears to be what looks like a SIM tray along the right side of the device, which would substantiate the rumors that the S6 will not feature a removable battery (something further suggested by the extremely thin dimensions of this product). Finally, the placement of the flash/bio-metric sensor to the right of the rear camera matches up with the recent spade of case renders seen.

Samsung-Galaxy-S6-Schemas-02

These design sketches were leaked a short while ago, and match up with the phone blueprint contained in this post. Could this be the actual design of the S6?

Some have already commented that the device pictured looks quite similar to the existing Galaxy S products which would directly contradict the stance that Samsung will build the S6 from the ground up, however it’s important to remember that internal components are just as important as external design elements, and thus it’s way too early to make a final judgement call either way, assuming this even is the final product.

spigen galaxy S6 case (1)

If this case render is legitimate, the S6 would theoretically look quite similar to the Galaxy S5 when covered up. But what of the idea that Samsung is building the product from scratch?

The unknown source of the new leak doesn’t add to the credibility of the image, and when one considers that dozens upon dozens of designs may be considered for a product, we must advise readers to remain skeptical until further notice.

Images of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Edge leak out both with and without a case

If you needed any more confirmation that Samsung is probably going to be announcing both a Galaxy S6 and a dual curved-edged smartphone at MWC 2015, then this should be pretty clear evidence. While we should never fully accept anything we see in leaks, this Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Edge leak which shows both devices with […]

Samsung to add more Galaxy Tablets to Lineup in 2015

Samsung-Logo-Wordmark-RGB

Although some analysts had predicted (and recommended) Samsung reducing its breadth of devices available to the consumer this year, it seems that Samsung still has some surprises up its sleeve.According to GalaxyClub, Samsung has applied for three new trademarks with the Korean IPO: the Samsung Galaxy Tabs A, E and J. These are obviously names for new tablets, which will most likely join the ranks of the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab S in the coming tech release season.

The new names follow Samsung’s current trend of using other letters besides ‘S’ for devices, like the Galaxies A5, A7, E5, E7, and J1. The move to letters instead of longer, heavily-worded names is a good move for simplicity, as well as a good move for showing some sense of progress as a company, which, in a world of rehashes and Galaxy S16s, and Note 11s, may be a good move for the company altogether.

Samsung to begin selling Gear VR in some Best Buy stores on February 8th

samsung_gear_vrSamsung’s Gear VR headset was announced at the same time as the Galaxy Note 4, but getting your hands on one has been tricky. So far, Samsung has only been selling it online through Best Buy’s online store and in some European countries, so it’s hardly widely available. Fortunately it looks like that’ll change in February.

Starting February 8th, a select 100 Best Buy stores will begin stocking the Gear VR with a demo Note 4 for customers to test drive. The demo units will have four experiences to check out, including Milk Video for videos, TheBlu for gaming, Transformers for a virtual reality movie, and 360 Photos for viewing images. Those should cover most of the bases for someone that’s interested in buying a Gear VR.

The demo has some limitations, however. It’s limited to just 3 minutes, and you can only view content that’s approved for the demo, so you wouldn’t be able to look at your own pictures or games with the demo headset. There are a few other safety stipulations, too, which makes sense. Pricing on the Gear VR hasn’t changed, so if you are interested, it’ll run $199.

Samsung plans on testing the customer reaction with these 100 stores, and if it’s a positive experience, they’ll be expanding to more Best Buy stores later on.

Android 5.0 Lollipop soon expected for multiple Sprint devices

This is some great news for Sprint customers out there. A few of HTC, LG, and Samsung’s most popular devices are receiving updates for Android 5.0 Lollipop on the network.

The update for the HTC One M7 was confirmed via Twitter by Mo, the Vice President of Product Management at HTC. Its OTA update started today. He notes that Lollipop is coming to other devices as well.

Android Central said that Lollipop is also coming to the HTC One M8 and One M8 Harmon Kardon edition on February 13th and to the LG G3 on February 16th. Although, this could be subject to change.

Sprint Lollipop update schedule

You can also see in the image that the Galaxy S5 should have also started receiving the update earlier today. That appears to be true based on confirmation directly from Samsung.

Congrats to all the Sprint owners out there. Hopefully, the other characters will quickly follow with updates for these and other devices.

Leaked Samsung Galaxy S 6 dimensions note 6.91mm thin body

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Right_Side_TA

We are just weeks away from seeing the Galaxy S 6 introduced to the world on March 1 and there are many aspects that remain a mystery. The measurements, for example, have remained under the radar despite various reports on software and hardware. There was a leak of case schematics last week but the authenticity seemed a bit questionable. Today, alleged dimensions of the Galaxy S 6 appeared once again. The most notable measurement with this schematic is how thin the handset will apparently be. The schematic, provided by Underkg, has the Galaxy S 6 being 6.91mm thin which would make it comparable to the Apple iPhone. Calculating the given display height and width, it would span less than 5in; however, we highly doubt that Samsung is going with a smaller display.

Hit the break to see the leaked schematic.

You can go to your local Best Buy store and they will install Lollipop on your Galaxy S 5 even if your carrier hasn’t released it yet

Android_Lollipop_Statue_Screenshot_From_Unwrapping_Video_01

Well here’s some interesting news today for those of you that own a U.S. carrier-branded Galaxy S 5. Assuming your local Best Buy store has a Samsung Experience Shop in it, you can walk in with your Galaxy S 5 and they will install Android 5.0 Lollipop on it. Sprint and Verizon are already pushing the update to their respective S5′s, but even you have an AT&T or any other carrier device, you can still get the update. The only exception would be T-Mobile.

This news comes from a post on Reddit from an actual Samsung Experience Shop rep and it does seem legit. According to him the update is the same for all carriers, but each carrier has to add their own bloatware and conduct testing. How it works is that Samsung issues the update as say 1.0, which is what goes into the SMART system at least a week before they get officially released. Once carriers add their stuff, it might become 1.0att, 1.0vzw, or whatever. By going into the store, you will be getting the unadulterated version with no bloat, but apparently the bloat will still get downloaded to your phone once they are available and your SIM connects to the network.

There is a caveat to this and that is your phone cannot be rooted.

Let us know if you were able to get the Lollipop update on your Galaxy S 5 with this method.

Here’s another look at the upcoming Galaxy S 6….in a case

Galaxy_S6_In_Venus_Case_Leak_01

We have a pretty good idea what the Galaxy S 6 is going to look like thanks to numerous leaks, but here’s another for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunately the device is in a case, but according to Venus case maker, whatever is visible is the real deal.

These images confirm the placement of the heart rate sensor and LED flash moving to the right side (from the bottom) of the rear camera lens. You will also notice that the volume buttons are now separate for both up and down, rather than a rocker. The device sure looks thin too as it’s supposed to come in at just over 7 mm.
