Here’s another great look at the Galaxy S 6

Samsung_Galaxy_S_6_Case_Leak_99A

It might be Valentine’s Day today, but while browsing Amazon for a new case for my phone, I happened to find at a product page that shows the alleged Galaxy S6. I know what you are thinking. You have probably seen the other leaks that have left a great deal to your imagination, but this is a little different. This is the most detailed image of the S6 yet.

As you can see from the image, Samsung has limited themselves to only using a small beveled chrome trim around the edge of the display, similarly to the Galaxy Note 4 and A series. The sides appear to be a made of metal, and it’s very thin as expected.

Something you may have noticed is the placement of the power button, which is further down the side than on previous models. You may have also noticed the slot further down the right side. It would appear that the SIM and Micro-SD cards are housed in this one slot, as shown in the image below. If true, this is quite the departure from previous Galaxy S models that have always had the SIM and MicroSD card slots hidden behind the removable rear panel. This further confirms the unibody design that has been previously reported. One positive with the Hybrid SIM/Micro-SD card slot is that you will be able to access them without having to resort to removing the rear panel and battery like we had to with previous models. The one negative will be having to remember where the SIM tray tool is when you want to change SIMs, and the battery is non-removable.

There is a good probability that this might not be a true representation of the Galaxy S6 that will be unveiled on March 1st by Samsung. It might just be a render created by the case manufacturer to flesh out the product image. I’m inclined to believe it is legit though. If it is, what do you make of it?

Samsung awarded design patent for refined Galaxy Camera

samsung-galaxy-camera-2-01Samsung’s Galaxy Camera is a cool concept, but the actual design of the device is pretty clunky, to say the least. It looks like Samsung is working on updating that, though, as they’ve been awarded a design patent for a new camera phone device that’s much sleeker than what you can get right now.

The patent shows a device with a more refined body instead of the awkward grip that you’ll find on the current Galaxy Camera. The headphone jack on the device also appears to have been moved to the top and center, and it looks like Samsung has possibly found a way to integrate the flash into the camera lens encasement. There’s a small hole on the outer edges and no hole on the face of the device, so going by this single patent design, that’s the most likely conclusion.

Design patents, of course, don’t reveal anything about specs or hardware, so all we’ll get out of this is what Samsung is dreaming up for a new Galaxy Camera. If anything else surfaces, we’ll keep you updated.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910F) and Note 3 LTE (SM-N9005) receive Lollipop 5.0.1

Galaxy Note 4 Verizon-40

There’s more news about Samsung’s Android Lollipop updates today – both the Snapdragon powered Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910F) and the Galaxy Note 3 LTE model (SM-N9005) are seeing Android 5.0 updates rollout right now.

The Snapdragon Galaxy Note 4 update has so far been spotted in Germany and is currently available via Samsung Kies, although an OTA update should be on its way soon as well. The Galaxy Note 3 LTE update has been spotted in a number of countries in Europe.

Earlier this week, Samsung began rolling out its Android Lollipop update for the Exynos SoC powered Galaxy Note 4, while the standard Galaxy Note 3 saw Lollipop appear a couple of weeks ago. So far, it seem that Samsung has been better than many expected at pushing out updates to a number of smartphones, and also seems set to bring Lollipop to the older Galaxy Note 2 as well.

If you haven’t received an update notification yet, you can always force a check via Settings > About Phone > Software Update. SamMobile also has the firmware available to download for both handsets, if you’re the adventurous type who hates waiting for regional rollouts. Just type your model number into the search bar to find the latest update.

Samsung is working on a second generation Galaxy Tab S

Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_S_8.4_Front_Home_Button_TA

According to a new report published online earlier today, Samsung is busy designing a second-generation Galaxy Tab S. There’s allegedly two new variants on the way — the SM-T710 and the SM-T810. The devices are expected to be revamped 8.4- and 10.5-inch models of the current slates, so it looks like we’re not going to be seeing at any major changes.

With regards to hardware, the only difference we expect to see between the new and old Galaxy Tab S is an updated processor. The original Tab S features some top-of-the-line internals, but Samsung’s Exynos 5420 CPU is on its last legs and just isn’t powerful enough to run a 2560 x 1600 display.

Previous experience shows that the 10.5-inch Galaxy Tab S tends to lag quite a bit when it comes under intense pressure from a game, or even opening a packed multitasking menu, but, thankfully, this is an easy issue to overcome. If Samsung were to install a Snapdragon 810 chipset in the unit, it would be more than capable of powering the display and give an improved user experience all-round.

If your expecting to see these new devices at MWC next month, your going to be a tad disappointed. It’s way too early for their release as they’ve only just entered their internal testing phase, but we suspect they’ll hit the market some time in Q2 of 2015.

Samsung starts pushing out Lollipop update to Galaxy Note 3 (LTE) & Snapdragon Galaxy Note 4 in Germany

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Back_Galaxy_Note_4_Logo_TA

Hot on the heels of the Exynos variants, Samsung has today started pushing out the much-anticipated Lollipop update to all Snapdragon-powered models of the Galaxy Note 3 (LTE) and Galaxy Note 4 located in Germany. In terms of added functionality, this upgrade brings the latest build of the Android operating system, together with a multitude of bug fixes and stability improvements.

Hit the break for the full changelog.

System Improvements:

  • Radio stability improvement
  • Transition improvements

Eye Experience Implementation:

  • Split Capture
  • Crop-Me-In
  • Photo Booth
  • Auto Selfie
  • Voice Selfie
  • Swipe-To-Switch
  • Video Face Tracking
  • Live Makeup
  • Video Screen Sharing
  • Application Improvements:

Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.

Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the most timely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:

  • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
  • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
  • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
  • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
  • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
  • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).

New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.

Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.

Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).

Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.

Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.

Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.

Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.

Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key willonly be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

To see if the update is ready for your device, head into ‘Settings’, ‘About Device’, then tap ‘Check for Updates’.

New Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 passes through FCC on way to U.S. market

samsung_galaxy_tab_4_80_fcc_label

We already know Samsung is working on a new 8-inch Galaxy Tab 4 tablet device thanks to a GFXBench entry that was discovered last month. While the chip used is the mid-tier Snapdragon 410, that is a 64-bit chip meaning the device can fully support Android Lollipop. Based on a new FCC filing for the device, the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 should be headed to U.S. markets.

The FCC filing does not reveal much information about the new tablet. However, the test report that was submitted only covers Bluetooth and WiFi wireless, so it is not clear whether Samsung will release an LTE enabled version.

The release of the FCC filing is a good indication that Samsung is close to making the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 available to consumers. They could announce it at MWC 2015 in a couple weeks.

samsung_hq_picture1

If you own a Samsung device and reside in Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines, or New Zealand, you’ll soon have the ability to chat live with a Samsung representative at all hours of the day, any day, for support on your Samsung products.

The app, Galaxy Life, will soon be receiving an update that allows for this 24×7 live chat support. Also mentioned is that there will be a gold tier service for owners of flagship devices, but what services are rendered in that tier have not been disclosed.

The Galaxy Life app currently offers many deals and vouchers for residents of those five countries, including rewards to restaurants and theatres.

No word on when or if we may see this customer service feature expanded to other global markets.
